It´s all about pruning and training of those lanky roses
Comments (64)I have a question about Gertrude Jekyll. I pruned mine after its last flush to about 2-2.5ft and it looked pretty tidy for about two weeks It's since put out a couple of basals and new growth that has to be 5ft at least at this point. Gertrude Jekyll on 8/2/16 Gertrude Jekyll 8 days later As you can see, my GT is looking kind of gangly - Clearly I didn't prune it hard enough! My question is is it necessary to wait until after the cane blooms to cut it down? This is sitting out in front of a window at my apartment, and is kind of an eye sore to look at, plus, I don't want to draw unwanted attention. If it helps to know, I'm in NC zone 7b. AKA humid and hot!...See MorePruning bourbon roses?
Comments (11)I'm not sure where I heard this, but it seems like I recall someone on this forum saying the long-caned bourbons could be pruned by cutting out the oldest wood up to about one third of the plant. Is that ok? Because that is sort of what I did last fall to my Madame Ernest Calvat. Actually, I probably cut out more like half of the plant, including main and new canes, just because I kind of got carried away. It looks really good right now, which is a big relief, because when I was finished, I thought I had really WAY overdone it. What I was going for was fewer canes so that it would make a more reasonable looking climber on my porch column/trellis, with kind of a fanned out and pegged section to the side. It had gotten so big, with so many canes that it just looked like a mess. Is it unrealistic to expect this rose to conform to my plans in the long run? I also have a younger Madame Isaac Pereire that I fear will need a similar treatment soon. It is growing along a low fence, and I've tried to keep it pegged and woven along the fence, but again, the same problem of too many canes is becoming an issue. Can anyone give me any advice on whether this method is ok? My daughter says just move those monsters to a better location, but that would be quite a task, and I don't really have the space....See MoreMme Isaac Pereire--tell me all about her
Comments (20)We had to get rid of our "Mme. Isaac Pereire" because it defoliated from disease in Richmond, Ca along with its pink sport "Mme. Ernst Calvat" grown in Oakland, ca which I had bought for its' intense fragrance. M.I.P is one of the most fragrant roses on earth, but there are others equally as fragrant and much healthier when grown in the East Bay. I've been documenting roses that bloom well in no-spray and organic method gardens in the san francisco east bay in both public and private gardens for the last 10 years. Healthiest red roses out of dozens of Old Red roses evaluated in the s.f. east bay: Francis Dubruiel" FFFF out of five F's for fragrance. several old rose nurseries sell this rose which has an intense damask rose type scent, the type of scent which one expects from a red rose. "Crimson GLory" FFFFF out of five F's. shapely red roses that are deeply fragrant. I found this on the property I bought last year and have never needed to spray it with anything. Slightly less fragrant but still very fragrant, and just as healthy in this area, is "Etoille de Hollande" a red rose that appears to enjoy a large fan and enthusiastic fan base. a modern H.T. from the 1960's: "Papa Meilland" huge goblet shaped crimson roses that fade with purple on the edges. I find myself singing that old Joni Mitchell song to it..."I could drink a case of you" for its perfume is so very intoxicating. A must for collectors of fragrant red H.T.s.. if vintagegardens.com and roguevalleyroses.com doesn't have these roses in stock, I'd try hortico.com or pickeringnurseries.com in the winter for bare root plants. Caveat Rosa: "Gruss an Teplitz" became defoliated in two local gardens in Richmond and Emeryville and both rosebushes were destroyed. "Chyrsler Imperial" was destroyed after becoming defoliated from disease in my neighbors garden. two other roses I had to get rid of because they were coated with disease, were "Monsieur Boncenne" a red H.P., and "Rose des Rescht" both of these roses were coated with rust and defoliated. Both were unsightly and sadly useless because a rosebush cannot bloom without foliage to allow photosynthesis. Hope this is of help. Comments (6)Reading Victorian and Edwardian era rose texts, roses were described as "gross feeders". Own root, I'd imagine their preferences would be as varied as any other class, but you can be sure that huge, many petaled flowers on largish, semi climbing plants are going to require more food and water than "bush" types with fewer petals. Hmm, sounds a lot like many of the larger English roses, doesn't it? I can't provide you with personal information about what makes them happiest because in my soils and climates, in which I have attempted the ones I've tried, very few were anything approaching what you might call "happy". That's why the ones which have hung around as long as they have here, are still here. They don't require much different from the "norm." Many grew rather well at Limberlost Roses, the Old Rose specialty nursery which was in Van Nuys, Ca. The vast majority were budded on either multiflora from Canada, or Huey from American sources and all were potted in Bandini 102 potting soil. I just tried searching to see if that soil was still around and found the name owned by Spectrum Brands, a huge owner of many products we all know. Interesting. KIm...See Moresherryocala
