I just wish they would do something like this down in the Montgomery area when they expand....if any articles come out on it, please post a link here....i will forward to the local papers and see if they will do a story - might help give people ideas here!

Can you give me more details? What type of area is it (ie what type of plants to expect)? Why is it called New Georgia landfill if it is in Alabama? How far north of Bham is exit 264?

Michelle I think it is the 3rd exit after finley blvd exit not sure though. I would also like to know what kind of plants you can expect to find there?

It is very rough terrain. There are steep hillsides, thick undergrowth and lots of blackberry and smilax (saw) briars. If you aren't in good health, can't walk long distances, can't haul stuff back out of the woods, or if you don't like to work for what you can dig, this is not the place for you.

You will find: Magnolias, oakleaf hydrangeas, dogwoods, beech trees, ferns, wild azaleas, various oak varieties, pines, and almost anything else that grow as a native in north central Alabama.

I suggest you wear long sleeves and long pants to protect yourself from the briars. Wear comfortable shoes. If you have weak ankles, wear a high top shoe or boot. Bring string or rope to tie your plants into bundles. There are fire lanes and Alabama Power right-of-ways so you can bring a wheelbarrow if you like. I'm taking a large garbage can strapped to handtrucks. Bring water or soft drinks for thirst. I suggest a candy bar (sugar) for quick energy recovery and a long handled, sharp shovel. You would be surprised how many people try to dig with a flat end shovel. The long handle gives you added leverage and serves as a walking stick as you go up and down the steep hills. The wasteful people up there in Atlanta generate so much garbage that they have filled up every hole and depression for hundreds of miles around and have started to build mountains now. Guess they wanted to share their bounty with the friendly people in Alabama. Don't be surprised if you find that they were invited to dump the garbage there, so that one day in the not too distant future, all of the low areas will be filled in and the owners will level the entire area and build a sub-division on top of the landfill!
That's near 41st Ave N in North Bham, I think, In the Washington Heights area.

Hey, Rb. Folks in Atlanta are taking our part of the water out of the Chattahoochee River and now you tell me they are going to send us their garbage. Maybe we can get enough garbage to fill up the pot holes on I-20.

Why would anyone want to use the water from the Hooche after it flows through Atlanta? I would be afraid to even water my plants with it, after seeing the color of it downstream from their sewage treatment plant. Look on the bright side, there's the Coosa, Tallapoosa, Tennessee, Tombigbee & Warrior, that they can't contaminate, so far!

Drat, I missed it today! I forgot all about it until Rosemary reminded me. Do you think they would let me go tomorrow (sun) or Monday to dig?

Michelle11, they won't be open tomorrow. The Keep Bham Beautiful Board acts as hosts and they only do it once a year. Lynn and her daughter Michelle (Prattville) came. We ate a bowl of soup for lunch and headed off to No. Bham/Lewisburg for the dig. We dug a bunch of ferns. Lynn and Michelle headed back to Prattville with a truck load of oakleaf hydrangeas. We had a good, but cold, time. Maybe next year you can come.

BTW, I never did see it advertised in the Birmingham News. I know it is always in February so I called the Keep Bham Beautiful Bd for the date. The turnout was very, very poor. There is usually another dig at the Jefferson County landfill at Turkey Creek in April. Maybe you can come for that one. I'll make an announcement on it as soon as I get the facts.

Michelle, the trip is worth it. I got beautiful ferns, large. My Michelle got so many hydrangeas, thanks to Terry. I dug uner a log to get the roots of a small plant that I thought was a trillium. Terry thinks it's a type of Ginger. He did tell me I might be playing with snakes digging under a log. Just had to get that plant! :O)
I enjoyed the most about the trip was Terry's bean soup. Absolutely delicious. We also enjoyed the way Sylvia has decorated their house in a county cottage like theme. Lots of neat stuff.
My only problem was keeping up with terry and Michelle's long legs. Heh Heh.
Maybe you can go to the one in April.
