Where to get (free) wood chips in Birmingham/Hoover

I have a muddy corner of my yard which I would like to cover with wood chips to prevent the dogs from getting terribly muddy over there. I know that I need to work out a drainage solution, but need to do something ASAP to keep the dogs and home clean this spring. . .

Does anyone know where I can pick up either free or very inexpensive wood chips?

Some tree companies are happy to find a place to dispose of their current load of mixed wood chips. It won't be pretty, but it would do the job.

Contact Asplunfdt, Craig's or Davis Tree Service on Old Lorna Road or go to the classifieds for Tree Service. They will be more than happy to dump green chips. Be sure you inderstand these will be mixed woods and they will be green.

"I can say that we do have centipedes in IL. I wish we didn't." I didn't know we had lizards in IL either until one ran through the house. My DH thought he was seeing things until we found it dead a few days later. It had a little stab mark in its chest, so obviously one of the pets got it. :( For a year we thought it had to be someone's escaped pets. Lizards in Illinois? Then they were rehabbing a 100-year-old house up the hill and found the foundation area just full of them. LOL, I still remember the screams of grown men. They estimated tens of thousands. (I have no idea how correct that is) Kimmsr, your paragraph ought to be sent to every gardener, every spring as a reminder. Bugs are just a part of it all. My neighbor found a snake the other day and I'm pretty sure she's blaming me and all of my gardening. She was very upset. I said "Well, maybe that's why I've yet to see a rodent around here. Hope he keeps up the good work." I got the dirtiest look. LOL.

The termites you have in New York need a cool, moist place to live and dry wood to eat. In some 30 years of having wood chips mulches in many places around my yard, and on the beds next to the house, I have not found any termites in the mulch although I have found termites where dry wood was. Carpenter ants may move into the mulch, and I have seen them there, but the only time I have found them in the house is when the roof failed and the wood where they were was wet. Those are not something that I would be very concerned about.

Go to Craigslist.com and in the Free Stuff you will find posted for March wood chips, manure, etc. Good luck. I like using wood chips. Hay or straw will blow away. El

Thanks all, I guess I just needed to open my eyes when out. I was researching on the web, and not seeing good options there. I went to get a yard of compost today, and turned around while he was dumping it into the truck bed, and there it was - the big pile of forest mulch. Looked consistent enough to do okay in the front yard. And at about $22/yard, that seemed reasonable too I think kimmq - regarding 'may take years to show soil improvement', Yeah, I wish I had done what I'm doing now when I moved in here 10 years ago. But I figure I'll probably be here another 10-20 years, so it makes sense to get the soil going in better directions. The sad part... I had three large (30-40') trees removed a bit over a year ago. Had I known wood chips were a good thing to improve soil, that would have been ideal to just use those (at least in the back yard.) Live and learn...
