Olga, I planted Therese for my neighbor here in Lansing about 20 years ago. The plant never, ever, gets blackspot but it does get mildew, which, unlike blackspot, is very rare among roses here.

Ditto what Mike Rivers said only in South Central PA. Mildew is extremely heavy on TB. My other rugosas are not bothered at all by disease.

olga, you surprised me by saying that it even gets bs. i don't have a major bs problem, i only had 1 rose defoliate, baron girod.

Thank you. I mentioned Bs because I saw it with approx 10-20% BSed leaves in some other person's garden this June. I was wondering how bad it will be later in summer. 10% in June can be a 100% leaf loss in August or still just 10%. PM is rarely a serious problem here unless I stop watering. Only during really dry and chilly fall I see it on a few most succeptable roses. Interesting. I really appreciate you comments.

Olga, My TB seems to get 1/3 BS. Rotes Meer and Rugosa Rubra seems to do better and get less BS than TB. Hope this helps.

This easily grown plant is one of the few "old" roses independent garden centers here stocked before full lines of them started to be seen.

I don't have a big Black Spot or Mildew problem with TB . She is beautiful and smells greatbut she is a once bloomer for me.

Therese Bugnet IS my favorite rose. She does not get BS that I've noticed, but she does get ratty looking to me from the heat of the summer. Mine tend to suffer from red spider mites. The leaves tend to get yellowish in the heat of the summer, and some of the leaves get brown edges. (Boy am I saying some bad things about my favorite rose, huh?) In the spring she is so beautiful I want to hug her...literally. She is so inviting. In the winter she has gorgeous, sinewy red, nearly thornless canes.

Robert, yes take a picture of her! I too am in a heavy BS area; I have a spot for Therese where she'd get some afternoon shade but bright sun until 3 pm, next to Hansa and Sir Thomas Lipton. They both have perfectly healthy foliage so I hope She'd take the hint! So tell, how does she repeat for you?

I had TB here in NC and I dug her out after three years. She did blackspot - not too much, but the leaves turned yellow. She was a sparse once bloomer. But the final straw was the fact that she sent runners yards away and tried to come up in the middle of my daylilies and everywhere else. She suckered like nothing I have ever seen! Denise

my experience so far has been no diseases on TB (I have 2), but its leaves are a welcome snack for some parassites (don't ask me for the english name, look in google under the latin name, Arge pagana).
TB grows as big as Rosereie, and nearly as big as Scabrosa, but R and S are superior in reblooming and parfume. So I'd suggest you R or S rather than TB.
Like TB no disease, but conrary to TB their leaves are no snack for anyone.
I have 5 R and 4 S vs. 2 TB: this reflects also my relative evaluation: TB is no bad, but could be better.

PS: neither R nor TB have hips, whereas S has...

I used to grow her and never noticed any BS on her. She did not repeat bloom for me. I loved her red canes in the winter though.

Thank you very much everybody. I already have several rugosas in my garden now and in the past had experience with many of them but not TB. I do have Rosererie. I understand about leaves becoming ratty looking by the end of summer, many rugosas do this in warm climate. I am not so cocerned about repeat, but want decent looking bush most of the time. Lokking forward to see Robert's picture.

I have TB at the Jersey shore and I don't remember much BS but she does have a few or more large canes die each summer. It doesn't seem to stop her from coming roaring back the following spring. Her fragrance is one of my favorites.

I'm in a hot, dry climate and my TB definitely did not get ratty leaves except at the bottom and these were hidden by all the young new growth, and yes she did rebloom. I have the feeling this rose likes specific climates and habitats but from all the above haven't been able to work out precisely what that is. Mine had no disease whatsoever but neither does anything else here except for Mutabilis, which is showing a bit of blackspot for the first time and a lot of yellowing leaves. (I think I overfertilized.)

I like Theresa a lot and it behaves well in my garden in terms of disease resistance, bush appeal, density of bloom (though blow quick) and bloom form. Besides these attributes it actually gets large and requires no protection from winter. Right now all the leaves have fallen off for winter. Give it lots of room as some samples go tree like here and your in a hot climate in my opinion
