I wanted the front to be more or less daily/weekly maintenance free, since it's a 8' wide bed, I can't get into the back to prune, so roses are out. Plus I have 18 rose bushes in the back :) I spent so much time preparing the soil, I don't want to walk on it and crush the fluffy wonderful dirt! I could do Clematis along the fence, but again I have 6 in the back yard, and reaching the back to prune is difficult. We'll see how they do in the back, if I can keep them off the neighbor's driveway it might be an option, but for now, high Russian sage should provide a buffer for some time :) I put in all the watering, except ran out and had to order more, so I'll put the rest in this weekend and take pics. Almost everything has sprouted now, looks a lot better!

I tend to think in combinations, not limited to individual perennials, and including trees and shrubs. Here are five of my favorites from this year: This one is my top pick - I love the vivid reds of the viburnum berries and Lord Baltimore hardy hibiscus with the cool white of the veronicastrum: Veronicastrum is a fabulous plant that makes striking combinations with many things. It looks great with Russian Sage and hardy hibiscuses but also makes lovely monochrome combinations, as in this pairing with 'White Moth' hydrangeas: This combination of 'Carol Mackie' daphne and forget-me-nots made a nice combination in spring: I'm gradually turning the 'herb bed' on the south side of the driveway into bed focussed on warmer colors. Various red and orange daylilies, peachy roses, Summer Wine ninebark and culinary sage are the key plants. It's difficult to capture it in one picture so here are a couple of shots of parts of it from various angles: (The roses have bright red hips for fall and winter interest so don't get deadheaded...) If you have a damp spot, I highly recommend Astilboides tabularis. It has astile-like flowers in July but you really grow it for the leaves. This shot is from the third week of May, so it's a star early and remains so all summer whether it is in bloom or not (in fact, I often cut off the flowers as they are a distraction from its appearance I think!):

I put in some perennials (baptisia, peonies, salvia, catmint)and annuals but now that everything is starting to die back I realize that any other perennials I add should add something in the winter. Until the bushes get bigger I don't want so much bare mulch by my front door. The santolina still looks great and I am planning on adding some grasses and maybe lavender. Which are the nicest grasses to mix in with perennials and that won't get to big? Does artemisia hold up nicely for most of the winter? does it behave around other perennials? Small clematis for example. I also love grasses, but many blow over in the wind. Hameln is sweet. See here: I find most plants simply look dead. Some people like the look of sedum seedheads in winter. I like anything that attracts birds. A well stocked birdfeeder (not a birdhouse) is the ultimate winter interest for us. Thymes and winter savory look alright during the winter as well. My Johnny Jump ups often flower during the winter months. These plants reseed easily. I also enjoy the birds and any shrubs which have berries to attract them. I love my Karl Forester ornamental grasses right now. Also I have alot of astilbe in a partially shaded bed. I leave the flower heads and they turn a deep russet shade. Soon, though, we will get a thick blanket of snow and it covers everything. But for great looking foliage, try Arum italicum. The foliage dies back in the summer just as the berries appear, which to me, aren't worth it. After the berries die, the foliage reappears, remains until the next summer and is lush and green all winter. Even with the temperatures as low as 9F and several snow days, this plant still has beautiful burgundy foliage and looks great in front of some dwarf pine shrubs. I wonder how those Veronica's would look in winter with blue fescue grass.(?) That includes euphorbias, heucheras and their cousins, hellebores, evergreen ornamental grasses (carex, fescue, blue oat grass, liriope, mondo grass, phormiums), ferns, perennial herbs like salvia, lavender, rosemary; many of the alpines or rockery plants like helianthemums, iberis, armeria, stonecrops, arenaria, dianthus; groundcovers such as lamium, vinca, kinnikinnick and epimediums. Plus, some plants just look their best at this time of year - Iris foetidissima has produced deep orange seedheads, Schizostylis (now called Hesperantha) is in full, late season bloom, many hardy hebes will bloom now right through winter in a sheltered location, earlier species hellebores are setting buds, bergenias have changed to their burgundy winter color and a number of evergreen groundcovers like wintergreen, veronicas and rubus have developed their burnished winter color also. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: SallyM z4 MN You mentioned you have trees and shrubs in your front garden. Do any of them have red foilage or red twigs (IE: red twigged dogwood). Also, trees like the river birch have great bark throughout the year. Depending on your tastes, how about something like rattlesnake master (eryngium yuccifolium). My artemesia does not even make it throught the summer without getting ratty. My Arum italicum has been doing wonderfully; I've had it since 1997, purchased from the dreaded Michigan Bulb Co. It was bareroot and remained small for the first few years. It didn't even produce the berries until 2000. It's grown wonderfully; I only keep it for it's foliage; the berries aren't even worth the show. Thankfully they're short and will be hidden by new plantings. I just decided to turn that bed into a hummingbird area, since I finally had my very first 2 visitors this summer.

how much sun? and is it sun in winter or during the growing season? some of the plants mentioned above might not fare as well if it is mostly shade (assume it is if you have fatsia, ferns and hellebores there). in which zone are you located? the usual suspects of impatiens, caladium and coleus come to mind for shade annuals. there are some nice coleus available that are spillers with smaller leaves and a trailing habit. some perennial choices could include japanese painted fern (if you don't already have that), autumn fern (orange new growth) and maidenhair fern, astilbe, hosta, cyclamen, heuchera, toad lily, bleeding heart. these aren't trailing types of plants but could add texture and color. the plants you currently have there are some favorites of mine (not familiar with that particular mahonia) and you just can't have too many ferns! a plant that has done very well for me in a fairly dry site under a tree is variegated solomon's seal. mostly dappled shade with very early morning sun and it has slowly spread through rhizomes to form a nice colony. grows about 18" high with arching stems. they remain all summer and the foliage goes to an attractive yellow in the fall. variegated solomon's seal - click here
