Hmmm. I wouldn't leave them in standing water for a few weeks. Roots could begin to rot. I always put my pots all together in a semi-sunny place to make it easier to water, but I'm blessed with a neighbor who doesn't mind watering. Thank goodness.

I did this on my vacation this year. It worked but I had my dear friend check on the water level after the a few days. She let the roots dry out and prevented standing water.If you are gone for 14 days you need a good neighbor to check on your babys. If you have a shady area with drip lines on a timer you would be better off.

I do the kiddie pool trick but haven't left them for more than a week. Two weeks with lots of tropical storms/potentially heavy rains in the forecast may be a mistake.

What about mosquitos?

Mosquitos would be a concern for me, as well.
They're not nearly the plague here that they are in more humid parts of the country,
but we do get them.
And, like CemeteryRose, I would be concerned about pots sitting in standing
water, from the point of over-wet roots.

We're leaving next week, and will be gone for 4-5 days -- and we have a lot
of newly-rooted plants right now, so it's a concern for us, too.

I think your best/cheapest solution (besides a neighbor) is a sprinkler hooked up to a battery powered timer. I left some plants (about 60 of all sizes and types) alone for 6 weeks that way before I moved into a new house. They did fine between the sprinkler (one of those back and forth mechanism ones) and natural rain. A semi shaded location works best. Drip irrigation would work great too, but is a lot to set up. If you have more pots, then you might need more than one sprinkler, and many timers have multiple stations.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I never thought of the mosquito problem! We have enough of them already without me adding to the breeding sites. I guess the pool idea is not a good one.

I have an irrigation system with drip tubes. I suppose I should haul them to differing spots in my yard and hook them up to the extras. My closest neighbors are still "up north". I hate to ask the few overloaded (workwise) ones to water every day for that length of time, but I'm sure they wouldn't mind checking on them every few days. They are in heavy clay pots, so unless we get a bad hurricaine, I don't think they'll blow around. I'll delay my trip if one is about to hit us, and hopefully none will spawn while we are away. At least where I am located (in the middle of the state) is not as vulnerable.
