Does anyone grow Royal Sunset Cl.?

I found this at my local garden center on clearance. It had one glorious fragrant bloom on it, and beautiful healthy leaves and I decided to replace my Abraham Darby's on the pathway trellis. RS will match up with Polka coming from the other side and be the first set of arches people see. Poor Abe, much as I love his flowers, just did not give a good first impression! I have never been able to grow him as well as at our previous house when he climbed high into the crab apple tree and brought people to tears of wonder. I can not SP him. I will find him a new home along the deer fence somehwere, but it will be a bi of an out of the way location.

Anyhow, what can you tell me about Royal Sunset. Does it live up to this first great impression it made on me? I live within a mile of the beach in the Puget Sound area.

Royal Sunset climbing is one kind of rose.No doubt at all ,it had Strong, fruity fragrance,beautiful and healthy
leaves.It is one of the best selling roses.

A man in the Tacoma Rose Society has one that is thirty feet wide and fifteen to twenty feet wide. It is a stunning rose and well worth your time, ps it does great here with little work to keep it looking great. His is on a southern exposure with large trees to the east and west.

So gorgeous!! And her scent really is wonderful. Mine is one of my favorite roses, and it's hard to choose, so that says a lot. I'm so happy to see her with buds already :) Last year the polar vortex during horrible winds nearly killed her, and she had to re-grow everything above ground! She got a few nice canes since then, but this year is when I'll get to enjoy the blooms again :) She's probably hardier than I make her sound, too, y'all. Mine was grafted, not buried, and wasn't protected. This year I had her buried to go ownroot, and I did protect her base all winter. Her canes did great, and we dipped as cold as last winter :)

I picked this up at a local place ending their season for only ten dollars . It was very healthy, only a few bs leaves at the bottom . Lots of blooms and smelled nice. I asked the gentleman if they sprayed for disease and he said they didn't . So I have had it for a week , and bam.. almost all the leaves yellowed and black spotted and fell off . Now this rose came from a gravel parking lot in full sun and to my patio part shade. Wondering if it was something I did ? Maybe overwater but it gets the same as my other pots who are fine . Also do you grow it.? Does it need sprayed and how is it for you? I may just give it to my mom if it's fussy . She happily grows anything and never cares if it's naked or not . Thanks ! I do hope it's a good rose , it smelled so nice!

Oh my! And I was planning to grow it on a copper arch over my path! Does this mean it should go out over a fence along the property line instead?

I meant twenty feet tall. It is not a rose for any arch I have seen. Grow it near a fence and train the canes outward as they reach the top of the fence.

If you want to see Royal Sunset up close and personal, go to the rose garden in Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. They have several in the rose beds. I was just out there last week. They were in bloom and had nice flowers even though the majority of the plants in the garden looked rather ratty because of the mildew, blackspot, and rust. The test dahlia gardens and the fuchsias looked quite nice, however.

Hi. My Royal Sunset is 7 years old and it is a very mannerly grower over my regular sized arch (Abe Darby is on the other side.) Mine is own-root, so maybe it is smaller because of that, but 20 feet tall?! Not my plant, no way. : ) In my climate it is very resistant to BS; rust and mildew arent issues here.

Well, I Looked at my arbor and looked at that beautiful rose and decided to go ahead and plant it there. The arbor is good sized, a home made structure of welded copper pipe. IT is at least 6' wide, 4'deep and 9' tall. IF it doesn't work I can always cut it down and try again but I am going to give it a chance to shine. THe leaves on the plant I got are so beautiful, thick and shiny green with no disease present now. IT will get good air circulation in this spot. I can not wait to see what it can do! DH dug a gemongous hole for it and it is on its way to being the star of the garden!

My Royal Sunset is also very mannerly and grows on my home made arch. It is a lovely rose, not great for cutting, but perfect for the garden. It has lovely wafting scent on a warm day. Keep it deadheaded and it will rebloom constantly. It is a rose that is perfect for coastal gardens.

I made it over to Pt Defiance Rose garden today. Found 2 lovely big Royal Sunsets...and yes, was delighted to see that it is the rose I have admired for years! But Holy Tomatoes! The stems are a good 3" thick on those beauties! I wonder how long they have been growing there? It looks like those of us growing them on a 2 dimensional structure better prune off any canes that want to grow in the other directions! THese had about 5 of the massive trunks on each one and made a big full circle probably 10 feet tall and nearly that wide. I can't wait! I took pics I may be able to post tomorrow. THey are still in my camera now.
