In general the old European once bloomer do not do well in warm areas. They need a certain number of days of dormancy. The same reason it is not possible to grow apple trees there and have them produce apples.

Charles de Gaulle is a HT from 1974. Lance, are you thinking of Charles de Mills maybe?

With that said, I am in Michigan and it struggles with cold winters, something you will have no issues with.

Thanks for the input. Now I have to find one. Seems it's not sold much anymore, like most older HTs.

Listed sources are Vintage Gardens and Hortico.

Vintage does not presently list it as available, however, and Hortico is not the optimal source of roses for Southern California.
(Their roses are budded on Multiflora, which does not like our alkaline conditions.)

And there's also the sad fact that the 'Charles de Gaulle' I ordered from Hortico was NOT 'Charles de Gaulle'. I've no idea what the rose I received was, but it definitely was NOT the lavender 'Charles de Gaulle'.

Hortico has in the past been infamous for supplying mislabeled roses. Maybe things have changed with them recently, but I sure wouldn't count on it.

I have Charles de Gaulle. It is a nice lavender and can have well-formed, fragrant flowers. Its biggest problem is that it does not rebloom well. It is quite slow to repeat. When it does, I appreciate it. I do not believe it cares all that much for high summer temps.

CHARLES DE GAULLE is usually available, own root, from Vintage Gardens in the spring. My advice is to order early, as soon as it is listed as available because this cultivar tends to sell out quickly.

I received an own root plant of Charles de Gaulle from Bruce Rennie, the Canadian miniature rose breeder around 1985. I grew it in Newhall, California, mid desert, where the temperatures ranged one hundred degrees from winter to summer and kept that plant until 2007 when construction require dismantling the place. It bloomed and rebloomed as well as any of the other sixty plus lavender HTs I grew. The flowers lasted longer than many due to heavier petal texture and more petals. Very good fragrance. Very satisfactory rose.

Did not repeat well for me as an own-root plant in CA's low desert, even after several years. Location was partially shaded.

I suspect it needs high culture, moderate climate, good location and or budding to perform at it's best. Color, form, fragrance, all good.

I eventually gave it away.
