I think you got it, Petaloid! Thanks again for the second try. When you said it was "Poppy", I took a look at my American Rose Society book and saw a rose called "Poppy Flash" aka "Rusticana" that looks awfully like my rose. I wonder if "Poppy" is the same rose as "Poppy Flash".

You're welcome, Carol. Check the foliage, wood, prickles and scent of newly opened blooms. Weather, fertilizer, moisture levels and climate can affect bloom shape, but the coloring of the blooms appear very similar to me between the two. Are there other darker mauve HTs you've bought, or is Rothschild the darker one that's followed you home? Rothschild is quite fragrant, or was here. It always appeared to me that none of the major US producers picked it up because they had Silk Hat in the pipeline. In my garden and to my taste, Rothschild was the superior plant and bloom, but it boils down to economics. Had they pushed Rothschild, they would have owed Meilland the royalties. Thank you I had not thought of that one as these hips were very large compared to the red (pink) Rugosa I have seen. If it is I guess I need to find a white rugosa as it was very nice looking shrub and had a lot of hips on it so must have had a good bloom.

The flowers od roses can be diffrent depending on weather conditions, a season of the year, soil and fertilization. That's why besides the flowers you should compare leaves, shoots and thorns - they never mislead. IMHO, the flower of rose 1 is very chararacteristic of "Chicago Peace" ( Hybrid Tea, Stanley C. Johnstone, USA, 1962). The shoots of the variety are reddish. In my garden... The rose 2 with the red flowers might be one of the fifty similar. It is also HT. It is much easier to indentify the next rose and it is most likely "Double Delight" (Hybrid Tea, Swimm & Ellis, USA, 1977). In my garden ... (I have just seen your previous post with the pictures of bi-color rose, they are closer to "Double Delight" than these ones here) As the flowers age, the color red begins to dominate and this occurs through the interaction of sunlight ultraviolet light on pigment found in the petals. And that means that you never have the same two flowers, because solar conditions are variable and exposure time. This also explains why 'Double Delight' grown in greenhouses, where UV rays are filtered out, remains the pure white rose. Both roses are very popular all over the world, no matter where you live. I grow them in Poland, USDA 4a, under cover during the winter.
