My order from Vintage is Mutabilis, Cramoisi Superieur, Georgetown HP and Rosa Moschata. Where they'll go I haven't a clue... but will buy some time. I have about 70 feet along my side fence that I plan to make into a huge bed, but have slight drainage issue that has to be dealt with before that happens and it doesn't seem to be happening very fast. :)

At my age I know better than to plan something like this, but hey, it's fun and when I retire will certainly have enough to do!

I haven't been able to bring myself to think about ordering roses this year, and it's getting late for doing so. Last winter I lost almost my entire order of French-grown ownroot warm climate old roses, including numerous rarities, after everything bad that could happen all happened together. This was discouraging. Also I have a feeling that I want to devote some attention to all the other plants in the world besides roses, and am thinking about purchases of peonies, clematis, box, and smaller assortments of other shrubs, such as Escallonia that I just discovered last year. Half my rose cuttings from last fall failed; the surviving half is mostly great whomping rambling roses that I'm puzzled to find a place for; and a friend who's a great propagator has said that he has some roses for me. Of my cuttings the few non-rambler survivors are R. chinensis viridifolia/'The Green Rose', 'Tipsy Imperial Concubine', 'Mme. Jules Gravereaux', which I already had but the plant is suffering, perhaps 'Beauté Inconstante'; and the cutting I took from the grafted 'Rève d'Or' a friend gave me took. Oh yes, and R. omeiensis pteracantha. And 'Marie Pavie'.
Meanwhile it's raining; we had a night of thunderstorms and rain, very gratifying after three weeks of heat and dry weather, as this comes early enough so that the plants will be able to profit from it making fall growth. The day after tomorrow is forecast to be mild and sunny. Nature is kind, sometimes. I plan on marking the sites for DH to plant various potted shrubs while I pull weeds if I have the time. Yesterday arrived the cuttings from a friend in Varese, northwest of Milan. She has a fine collection of roses, all well chosen and many rather rare, and shares cuttings from them with royal liberality. I hope they do well. Last winter was unusually bad, actually the worst I've been through since I began gardening twenty-odd years ago. This year I hope to avoid last winter's mistakes.

I took a few cuttings from my old garden this autumn (a few means about 50+... not all roses though), so will see if anything is willing to root from that. Rose ones mostly are unknown roses that were just propagated from person to person, also maybe Stanwell Perpetual if it roots from spindly cuttings I took from one year plant (ok, rather big 1 year plant). I also have high hopes for Luise Odier (that's the one from your cuttings Melissa), other summer cuttings do not look that good though, somehow even those that rooted failed to take off - but you never know, especially if we will get the normal winter, not the freaky one like last year.

Oh well, I probably should be more worried if most of my cuttings from old garden root in, since that would get me to a lot of plants I have no space for. /0\

On the side note, I really hope that whatever I ordered won't be mislabeled or replaced. It really sucks to wait a year and then see that your precious white OGR rose is actually generic red HT. /0\

I am seriously considering replacing at least 2 not -great roses with SDLM. She is so good here! She was planted 2 yrs. ago and is out-performing several that are a few years older. She came from Chamblee's. I fertilized in Aug. and she is full of healthy green foliage and pumping out blooms. Carefree Beauty, Mrs. BR Cant and a baby cl. Cramoisi Sup.are the best right now.

Yay! It looks like I'm going to be getting Mme Lombard, Pink Pet and Sophie's Perpetual as bonuses.... so now I can "try out Mme Lombard" just to see. Even though I don't really have room for her. But maybe one of my other larger roses will disappoint me. ;) :O

greybird, I have two plants of Souvenir d'un Ami and am very fond of this rose. It grows about as wide as it's tall, with a slightly spreading habit, and is well-covered with leaves. Mine have been very good in the heat, and the flowers have rather thick petals. The color is basically pink with some salmon tones, but it really comes across as more pink.

aimee, I also got Sophie's Perpetual as a bonus rose since I asked for it but don't know what the other one will be. Mme. Lambard will please you, I'm sure. It's a lovely rose.

'Général Schablikine' is a pinkish-copper-to-red China-Tea and a beautiful plant with all the classic grace and elegance of this group: a very fine rose. 'Papa Gontier' grows wider than tall and is vigorous and easy to grow. The flowers are mostly red, paler in cool weather, and on the climbing sport at least I've gotten interestingly streaked pink and cream blooms, though I don't remember seeing them on the bush form. Both of these roses are resistant to mildew, which is my major fungal disease here, and root readily from cuttings.
elemire, I'm sorry you didn't get more plants from those cuttings, but hope 'Louise Odier' holds out: she's a good rose.
I finally went out yesterday and checked out the scene of last winter's Tea massacre, and was slightly comforted to find that possibly a third of the order did survive. Those that made it included 'Yellow Mutabilis' and 'Lady Ann Kidwell', two roses that I had been wanting badly.

I am expecting two roses I ordered in May from Sangerhäuser Baumschulen in Germany, 3 each of Old Port and Salzaquelle. I was shocked at the winter damage on the large shrubs so now I'll try a few more smaller roses. The colours are different also from my usual bland colour schemes, the roses are purple and lilac. I'll put them with yellow and purple perennials and yellow roses. I've no idea what it will look like, it may be horrible. I can always move them later if it looks too awful.

From Vintage I'm getting Ards Rover and Nellie Hillock. I'll probably order more later.
We went to the Regan's half off sale lst weekend. There we picked up Tea Clipper, Darcy Brussel, Alnwick Rose, Lychfield Angel, Paddy Stephens and White Licorice.

I have a couple of renaissance roses - Phillippa, Lilliana and did have Eleanor but didn't like the colour. These roses are interesting but can be difficult to place since they grow quite enormous and upright. I mainly grow them for the cut flowers as they keep brilliantly in a vase and have conveniently long and not terribly thorny stems. Not always free from BS (although they have been good this year) and am always surprised that they seem so little known, even in the UK. Lots of the Poulsen ground cover roses get about and just wondered why this particular group is so hard to find.

I only have one Renaissance rose, and it grows straight up to 7.5 feet every year. It produces 2 foot stems, just as you described. It's bombproof here. I decided to try more.

I don't understand Poulsen's marketing. They've produce some terrific roses over the years but it's almost impossible to get your hands on them. Their supermarket minis are everywhere. Poulsen goes to the enormous expense of patenting some of its good garden roses in the USA, but then it doesn't seem to license the marketing of those same roses, or when it does, its marketers aren't very effective. I checked the Poulsen website for three Renaissance roses. Each of the three is marketed by a different company in Canada, one of which is another wholesaler. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Consumer demand obviously has no part in Poulsen's marketing plan.

I have that weird feeling also with other Scandinavian rose companies, there is another company producing lovely moderns, but also has very weird marketing strategies that just do not follow any logic.

Two observations here;

First, try some of those Poulsen supermarket roses out in your garden; for me, they're surprisingly hardy and I've got one that has the longest-vase life of any other rose I grow.

Second, we need to formally start a "Roses Anonymous" for addicts. ....my name is ProfessorRoush and I can't stop buying antique roses.....

I did try two Poulsen supermarket minis. They were total busts. The colors faded in 5 minutes, the blooms blew in 7 minutes to reveal ugly brown stamens in the center, and the foliage was fungal-ridden. The brown centers aren't exclusive to Poulsen, by any stretch, but I hate them just the same.

I have ordered 2 Sweet Chariots and Mme Antoine Mari. I will be ordering SDLM (which vendor?) and a climber, maybe Aloha.
That is my newbie list!

The super market minis were a disaster here. Rust city. My neighbor has one that's really fabulous, covered with non-fading peach flowers year round, but she sprays it with fungicide year round, too. rootygirl Chamblee's has a good clone of SDLM, at least mine has been vigorous and bloomy

Great news about my short list. RU have the three teas I want, but they are small now, to ship in the spring. I love doing business with Pat and Roses Unlimited, great people, super service and above all, fantastic roses!

rootygirl, I also happen to have a SdlM from Chamblee's and it has done very well for me too. After a year it's not huge (which is good for where I've placed it) but it's a very steady bloomer and completely healthy. I'm sure it will bloom even more when it becomes more mature and settled in. Can't wait for the next spring flush.

Jeff, I'm so glad you added pictures to your post! The RU plants are outstanding! If only they had another outlet on the west coast! The only rose I have in your group is Cels Multiflora, which I love. The flowers are so sweet-looking, and the shrub as a whole looks delicate, with an open structure and small leaves. I wish you great luck with all your acquisitions. By next spring you should be able to post pictures of some lovely blooms.
