King's Ransom. When I bought my first home, this was the first rose I ever planted. Brings back fond memories of that time period. Once I got married and moved, I tried to grow it again, but it never did well here.

Harrison Yellow. My grandmother had one when I was a child. It was the first yellow rose I'd ever seen and I loved it. She embroidered a likeness on a pillow case for me.

Double Delight. When I first moved out here after getting married, we were renting, and I made friends with my next door neighbour, we became pretty good friends and would spend the day most of the time either at her house or mine chatting. She loved to garden and had lots of vegetables and flowers, among them Double Delight and a few other roses (I did not know it wad DD till I got into roses myself) she would cut roses for me and bring over, and the whole house would smell fragrant. She had diabetics (pretty severe) and was on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant - two months into my pregnancy she got a donor match, but unfortunately she did not make it - the transplant was rejected and she got infections and a couple heart-attacks - the last one took her life - she was only 34 at the time. Anyway, she introduced me to Double Delight and each time I see my plant and smell the blooms, I think of her.

Aprille, I just saw your post after I had just sent
one through. That is a strong memory to have about
a rose and very moving. I'm sure you'll always be
able to think of the good times with regards to
your friend as well. Nice to hear from you!

Not really a specific rose, but just gardens in general... when I was teeny-tiny, a neighbor had a garden that stretched the length of his property - which at the time seemed as long as a football field! He had planted grapevines on long fences in several parallel rows, and mixed in were tons of blooming flowers. I loved wandering (I guess it was more like toddling and stumbling at the time) up and down the rows, looking at the flowers and smelling the scents... this guy was an elderly widower and scared me to death cus he would sort of APPEAR in the garden, always surprising me so I would run off! One day he called and asked my mom if I could come over and help him with his kittens (I also loved cats) so she sent me over. Quaking and trembling, I knocked meekly on his door. He led me to the back porch and asked me to sit down and let the cats get used to me, while he busied himself inside the house... I sat very still, and eventually the kittens overcame their shyness and soon were running and playing all around and on me! I was laughing and enjoying myself and looked up to find him standing in the door watching me! After that, he always had some candy for me and would often thank me for 'helping' with his kittens... I remember that his wife died on Easter Sunday and every year I would sneak over there first thing in the morning to leave an Easter Egg and Basket of flowers outside his door. We moved away when I was about 9 and I heard years later that he died... and his daughter worte me a letter to let me know that he had enjoyed our friendship and she had found some of those old Easter baskets among his things. What a nice old guy.

I've wracked my brain, doesn't take much BTW, and realized that roses never made an impact on my early childhood!
Two other plants did though, Hollyhocks and Snapdragons.

I used to play with my sister near the railroad tracks in Cleveland, Ohio, and people had planted all different sorts and colors of Hollyhocks over their fences along the tracks or maybe the wind had simply carried the seeds over the fences but I can still visualize that scene, long rows of hollyhocks, railroad tracks and occasionally a train speeding by.

The Snapdragons were also mysterious to me. They certainly reminded me of dragon faces! I loved to open and close their little mouths. I was sure fairies existed and the dragon flowers were their friends. What really clinched it with those plants was the day when a little boy next door, Brucie, stuck his finger in the "dragon's mouth" and got stung by a bee inside! Ha! Well! after that, those SD's were even more magical than before since Brucie was also a Bruiser, he and his friend Frankie were always trying to beat my sis & I up.

Don't even know its name or color,well actually there were lots of them as we had a huge yard in back of our really big house and so there was room for lots of them.They were roses.I know that because my Mother liked roses but the japanese beetles which came over from New Jersey really bothered my Mother.I still can picture her out there with a can of gasoline killing the little buggers.I thought at the time you would have to be down right stupid to grow roses.Never payed any attention to them until I moved to Florida and found out we don't get them.The beetles I mean.We do get a relative but they aren't nearly as bad as the other ones.
So I decided to give them a try so I guess its those nameless roses that drove my mother crazy which bring back a great memory.Of my Mother and our great big house and yard,not of the poor little beetles getting gassed.

WHen I was a tiny girl there was an old Dr W Van FLeet rose blooming out in the middle of one of our pastures. It was supported by a timber framework in the shape of a box and spilled out so huge around me as a tiny 3 yr old. PArtly I remember because I have a photo of my 5 yr old brother and myself in front of it, but I really think I remember the sense of wonder at its thousands of blossoms as gently pink and fragrance as a new baby's skin. Later, when Dad sold the work horses and bought a tractor he moved the roses to an area along a creek that ran through a grove of seedling damson plums. As a teenager, it was my special get away place, just out of sight of the house if one sat down the bank near the water, which babbled along over the stones. THe plum trees were magic in spring when they were a cloud of pale pink, then followed by the rose, which must have climber huundreds of feet through the trees. I can still remember looking up at the puffy clouds moving through the blue sky and thinking the pale fragrant roses were among the most beautiful things on earth!

And yes, I have one now that I started as a cutting from a friend's mother after Dad purposely killed the rose and cut down the plum trees. (He was a farmer who fought "wilderness") Mine has filled the fence and now mingles with the grapevine and really needs to be tamed, but when it blooms I am in touch with the little girl still in me 60 years later!

When we visited my grandmother in the mountains, we would go to see my great-uncle and great-aunt in their lovely backyard on the side of a mountain. Their backyard was naturally sloped and was filled with flowers of every conceivable type (to my young mind). She also had a koi pond. It was magical to me (not to my sisters). She would have bottles of pic-a-pop that we would drink. The mountain freshness made it extra special. It was from their garden that I learned to love flowers. It's not just a Monet-inspired memory now - I see it everytime I go in the backyard. We too have a sloped backyard filled to bursting with flowers and color. Sigh :)

When I was growing up we had a beautiful pink rose climbing on chicken wire on the side of the house.

My mother always had a bouquet of the rose and honeysuckle on the table.

Many years later I was visiting Longwood Gardens and that is when I learned the name of this lovely rose---It was New Dawn

ND came out in 1930---so we are the same age.

I've often wondered how my family could afford a rose bush in the 30's when we barely had money for food.

I have fond memories of the little bouquet and the side of our home covered with this rose.

My grandmother was the only person I knew as a child who grew roses, oh how I loved to smell them, the old Hansa rose always makes me smile and sigh for the simple times of childhood.
