My Pat Austin (RIP) started thriving once I moved her from a relatively sunny spot to a spot with 4 hours direct morning sun only. She threw out new canes and produced several blooms before I sent her to the Next World.

My impression is that in hot climates this rose thrives on minimum direct sunlight. I seemed to have accidentally bumped upon the right sun-shade balance for this rose.

I had two Pat Austins, one in 1/3 sun, the other 3/4 sun. Both fried when temp. above 80. I gave away the 3/4 sun.

Pat gave the best blooms when my tall house shaded it last fall, with 3 hours of morning sun at temp. below 60. With LOTS of water it can counteract a warmer temp.

This is my 2nd Pat in the same place. I thought it was the 105 temps daily for 3 months that killed her last year [along with others] so replanted this year. Now I know "the rest of the story". I have a spot I can transplant her behind my horse barn that gets sun until noon then shade the rest of the afternoon. I will try her there. Thanks for the info on this rose - I really like this one, but dont intend to replace it yearly.

Even over here it is a pretty rubbish rose. The flowers last maybe 2 days at a push and temps like yours are mostly a pipe dream lol. I stuck with it as long as I could bear then dug the thing up. I would get Lady Emma Hamilton - much nicer flowers which are longer lasting and very nice red foliage.

I was watering it this morning....think it is probaby going to die before I have a chance to transplant it. One cane left, good leaves left but the cane has that "look" to it that tells me it is going to give it up. Actually....the flowers nod, blow. The only thing I like about it is the color. From the above comments - I will most definitely not replace it, and try Lady Emma instead. I adore Carding Mill, want another of those. Am trying Crown Princess Margareta and Lady of Shallot - too early to tell what those are going to do. Any thoughts on these? I love the Austin apricots.....I have Summer Song from Palatine but it isnt doing much. Long skinny canes, very little flowering this summer and the flowers were small but I only planted it last fall. The color is spectatular! I hope it will do the sleep, creep, leap thing.....anyone grow it?

for me Summer song is tall and rather lax. It will spread open under weight of its flowers but then will stand back up when they drop. Reminds me of Falstaff in growth and flower size - just in orange. I don't grow Lady of Shallot but I do have CPM - it is one of my favourites. Grace is nice too - no fragrance to speak of though. The thing with the apricots is that with the exception of things like port sunlight, they are all leander group. They tend to throw up stupid long canes, and when they do that you want to tear your hair out lol. Once they have done that though if you cut the big canes down to about a foot below the height you would do the rest, they branch nicely.

It's really a shame that this rose won't do well in a hot, humid climate. I'm the person who asked about it a few weeks ago, and have sadly decided not to get it. Lady Emma sounds like a much better option.
