never grown anything before but hooked on roses !!

hello everyone....new to this gardening but have been hooked by roses so please can anybody tell me why this second lot of blooms look like this.....first set of blooms were really healthy with lovely scent many thanks for your input and patience...... as i will be back for more !

Have you had lots of rain? High humidity? This can cause balling in some roses. Hard to tell without name of rose and your location.

If this rose is planted within two feet of that brick wall, you might consider moving it out. Lime in the mortar leeches into soil and can affect ph levels.

hi harryshoe... the rose is named " jude the obscure " by david Austin it was planted next to another rose of his named Gertrude jeckyll which seems to be healthy we live in poole dorset and yes it has been quite hummid these last few weeks

Just for information purposes, I went through a wooden arbor and one of those plastic coated over metal arbors before getting tired of seeing my roses laying on the ground after a few years. I wanted something reputed to be impervious to ground conditions (rust, rot and termites)and our "tornadoish" winds. I also was concerned about the arbor heating up. After research I finally chose a Copper Arbor. That's been 10 years ago, and so far no problems. Even under blizzard conditions, with the roses laden with a heavy coating of ice, the abor came through fine. Although I couldn't find what I wanted locally at the time I ordered from this company, which is still in business and gave me excellent service. You might want to check them out and investigate a copper arbor as a long term investment for your roses. Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Expressions-Copper Arbors.

Yes, thyme2dig, the Oakes that sells daylilies. I love having the tags, because they never fade, and I don't forget the plant's name. You can get any kind of name on the tag, it is created when you order it. I preferred the black background with white writing (engraved on the tag) but there is a white on dark green option as well. Kathy, these bushes, Midnight blue, usually bloom in smaller clusters. this is a first for the bush. Here is a picture of a Betty Ford daylily bloom with most of the tag visible, and more easily seen. The asterisk indicates that Betty Ford is a tet rather than a dip if I decide to do a little "pollen dabbing" (hybridizing). (It does need washed a bit:)) I have had some of these labels for five years, and they have not deteriorated any at all. kay

I would like to try Hollyhock, but it seems to have so many disease problems. I would love to try many plants but I just cannot tolerate floppiness. So I am hesitant to add Cosmos and Foxgloves to the garden as much as I love them. Cameron, here in Winston I am growing five Dahlias this year. I have a pink-orange daisy type that I bought at a nursery two years ago that overwintered in its pot the first year. It overwintered in the ground last year. I also have Ellen Houston which I bought at Lowe's last summer that overwintered in the ground; it was labeled as perennial. Interestingly, this year they were selling it as an annual, zone 9 I think! I added Ginger Willo, Crazy Legs, and Crossfield Ebony this year. I don't do anything too special to them (if they look really sad but don't need water I may mist the leaves) and they flower from June until frost. Well, I should say that I cover up the emerging spouts at night when they first pop out of the ground because slugs like them and I don't cut down the stocks after freezing to protect the tubers from water. I don't do any of the special preening and pruning because I am not trying to grow show flowers. You should give them a try!

I love a good descriptive plate of clear-winged moths. By late July there are usually 3 or 4 kinds working the flowers. The only one other than the hummingbird moth I remember is one called snowberry clearwing. They hatched out about 10 days ago. Check out the ears of these moths.

On roses with a zillion petals or more (like David Austin roses) it helps to gently peel back the outer layer of petals with your fingers.

I don't see what's wrong with your JtO, Jason. He looks healthy, and the buds seem fine to me. Do you mean they don't open--they balled? Or the size of the buds not as big and full as the one you've seen previously?

Jason, we need to know where you live. There are a lot of things that can affect blooms and a lot of them are condition related, like disease pressures, soil and weather. Knowing where you live will helps us determine what conditions the rose is growing in. Then we need to know exactly what you see that is wrong with this rose. The leaves look fairly healthy. The buds are a little droopy but some Austins are like that naturally. So I don't see what the problem is.

hi to all who came back with comments...... we live in the south of England and for the past month or so its been quite warm and humid I will try suggestion of peeling back gently the outer leaves thanks to all of you any other comments much appreciated !!!
