Ideal pH for potted roses?

The Complete Guide to Roses by Ortho says 6-6.5 other books say 5.8-6.2. Which is it? Also how do you measure the square footage of a container if I need to apply lime to raise the pH? They assume you are planting in beds like a 10x10 plot, but in a container I don't want to start applying dolemitic lime haphazardly and not getting the true reading until months later when the lime breaks down and starts to register.
