Anyone here grow roses in Southern FL???

I have a friend who was a rosarian on Long Island, NY, Cape Cod, MA, and is still trying on Marco Island, and now Naples, FL. He actually does O.K. during much of the year, except for late summer when the daily rain stops and it just gets super hot. Yipes- he has gone through so many varieties of roses. I know Mr. Lincoln holds up pretty well for him. He has a yellow rose that also does O.K, but I can't remember the name. He has tried Bermuda roses. I know it is a long shot, but can any of you offer ideas/varieties for my friend?

Growing roses in Fla. is great, and there are numerous varieties suitable for our climate and soil.. I am in St Pete, central Fla., and have been growing roses here over 40 years... I would recommend your friend go on Google and type in Fla. roses, and variations, such as 'growing roses in Fla', etc.... also go on Google to the various Rose Societies web-sites here, Sarasota-Bradenton Rose Society, Tampa Rose Society, Orlando Rose Society... every area has Societies and some have very informative web-sites, with growing tips and pics of roses that do well here...perhaps Naples has a Rose Society as well, he could contact, and talk to the helpful folks there..... I recommend he only grow grafted roses on Fortuniana, they withstand the nematodes in our soil... I get most of my roses mail-order from K & M Roses, on Fort., their plants are suited to our climate....and I grow organically, I use lots of Milorganite, Black Cow, Black Hen, Alfalfa Pellets, Cottonseed meal, mulch, Espoma, Fish Emulsion, etc. and mulch deeply... I find that if you keep a very rich soil the roses can withstand black-spot and most bugs, etc, I no longer spray... the earth-worms will tell you if you are successful ! Good Luck........... sally

There are at least five active Floridians on this list that I can think of right away. My best suggestion for him is to get online and join us! If he is not computer savvy yet, this is a very motivating and worthwhile resource.

My next suggestion is that he begin to look at our late summer blazes as he did his northern winters. You just can't expect much out of them at this time of year. One of many trade offs is roses on your holiday table.

I must say, mine look the best they ever had and I believe it is due to alfalfa meal pellets applied to the base of the plants and watered in. I use Merry Mix, 50# for about $13.

Cathystpete, I really cant remember now. The plant has a few flowers on right now, when I get back from work, I will need to go out and smell it Duchesse de Brabant, to me, is delightfully fragrant. If you ever decide you want another thornless and very fragrant rose, here is one for you: Basye's Blueberry It is not as fancy looking as most, but I love the simplicity of it and the overwhelming rugosa fragrance.... Wisconsitom, I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but I do want to point out that here in Florida, we often have issue with plant labels. Here, when a plant is labeled as 'Full Sun', putting it in 6-8 hours of sun, especially if it is late afternoon sun, is a good way to melt it! Supposedly Lemon Balm likes Full Sun in some places, but if you put it in Full Sun in my yard, it will die in days. I put some on the east side of my house, near the wall, and it got 'Morning to noon' sun and then was shaded the rest of the day. It lasted a month. But if it is planted in a spot where it gets 3 hours of morning sun and then 3 hours of later afternoon sun, but shaded through the rest of the day, it does fine. Yesterday I got home from a day of pressure washing my mother's house and found that one of my new purchases, a Purple Brazilian Salvia, was so severely wilted, I thought I had already lost it it. In it's spot, it had to have been in shade for much of the day, until 3-3:30 or so, but by 6pm when I got home, it was almost done. I moved it back to a shady spot and set it in a saucer of water and it rebounded, but boy was it ugly. Another plant that is 'Full Sun' in other places, but 3 hours of late afternoon sun almost did it in. Now, granted, as it is a very recent purchase from a local garden fair, it is very likely it needs to be hardened off, which is why I had it where I did. I just didn't think 3 hours of sun would have done that much damage.

Anyone grow Coreopsis "Moonbeam" in FL ?

I am currently growing Coreopsis 'Sunburst' from seed (it was labeled as a C. lancelota seed strain but it appears closer to grandiflora to me) and it's been fine so far, very resilient and fast-growing for a perennial. This species definitely doesn't grow in FL as BONAP is very reliable. There are many Coreopis species http://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Coreopsis and not all of them occur here. It's kind of confusing since they are all called Coreopsis but Coreopsis is just the genus name, bunch of totally different species. I was hoping if it grows in GA it could handle Northern FL but if it wasnt successful for you Bea than perhaps not. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you for your input. From what I read my friend does not prepare/maintain the beds as well as you two. He plants them in a mix of good soil, but after that it's all about chemicals and mulch.
