Bayer Advanced Disease Control...what the heck?

I have a Jackmanii clematis planted with an Autumn Sunset climbing rose. Tuesday evening I sprayed the rose bush for blackspot. By the time I got home from work Wed. eve, this is what it looked like. Could this have been caused by the Bayer, or is it something else? T.I.A.

Questions that come to my mind are;
How hot was it when you sprayed?
Were the plants well watered before you sprayed?
If a concentrate, did you mix it to specifications?
I can't imagine why a normal spray would hurt the clematis but it obviously doesn't like something.

I've never sprayed clematis before, but I do use Bayer regularly on my iris, peonies, lilacs, and verbenia with no adverse effects. So I do know that plants other than roses are fine with it, FWIW.

I live in Fungusville, Alabama. I am fortunate to live near Auburn. There is no paucity of information on chemicals, plants, etc. Our former rose society president made the drive from Auburn, plus we have been blessed to have several of those professors or former's as members of our rose society. I have learned a whole lot from them, but there is so much more that I have not learned. We were so fortunate to have had a wonderful Scotsman relocate here to design and care for the Shakespeare Festival gardens. His membership in our society was one of those treasured not only for his wisdom but his wit and that knack he had for telling you, "you are nuts" without saying it quite that way. His silly little grin when he was gently reminding you led you to know you had much to learn but he was not going to say that, quite a change from the professors, one of whom seems to know it all and if you do not believe it, just ask him, but all in all, I have been blessed to know so many and to find in how many ways they can disagree. You put all their knowledge in the blender, start out full-speed-ahead and then realize, you need to slow it down to blend, and when you hit that speed that works for you, do it but just be consistent.

Does the American Rose Society have recommendations on rose rosette? I found articles on their website. When contacting the local society, it would appear they believe there are large numbers of herbicide damage being mistaken as rosette, and there is just no way to tell attitude. I was hoping to find someone besides myself, and the local extension to confirm to others that what is present is actually rosette. I thought if there was a rose expert I could recommend to my HOA to consult with maybe they would wake up. I viewed pictures of herbicide damage, and it looks different. The local extension agent knows the difference, and has seen the difference. My fear is others may take the it is just herbicide damage no worries here attitude. Another resident removed diseased bushes, I wanted to cry when I saw it, because I was so happy someone actually paid attention. Anyone know if you can get arrested from taking photos at public places considered private property such as shopping centers?

I will add one more comment--since at least one poster seems to have misunderstood my point. I have several reasons for not using Bayer 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 (Michaelg's point above being the most convincing reason!) I do not object to using the Bayer Advanced Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs--it is just a fungicide--none of that "extra" stuff that I object to is included in this fungicide. You have to get it at Lowes or order online. What I'm saying is, I do not object to spraying for BS (though I do as little of it as possible). What I object to is using the 3in1 or 2in1. If you need to spray for BS, use the Bayer Garden Disease Control instead--but also check the numerous posts on this forum that suggest ways to cut even the use of the Bayer Garden Disease Control down to the least amount you can get by with. Thank you for all the excellent thoughts all, and sorry to disappear; I didn't realize the thread had grown so! The insufficient sun query is an interesting thought; up until a month ago, we had a MONSTROUS tree in the yard (which is very small) which certainly affected the sun in the garden area. We had it removed after it threw two giant limbs at our house in a one month span. It hasn't really been long enough to see what sort of an impact that will have and the black spot was already well established at that point, but I hadn't thought of that. I do like the idea of replacing a couple of the more damaged plants with modern varieties and seeing how they fare next year. Combined with the added sun, I'm sort of excited to see what sort of a difference it makes. In the last week, most of the plants have shot forth new flowers, which was pretty unexpected- they went from bare to bud to flower seemingly overnight. The humidity has been MUCH lower and the whole garden seems to be breathing a sigh of relief. I may see if I can get some pictures before the flowers fade. Thank you for all the guidance. I'll keep checking in and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions!

How strange. I sprayed my Warsaw Nike Clematis (it is with John Cabot and I had extra spray left) on Monday and it was fine, so it seems unlikely to be the spray.

Thanks for the replies. I sprayed on a cool evening, we've had recent significant rainfall, and I followed the instructions for mixing. No other plants sprayed at the same time were affected. I have some other clems and roses mixed, though this one probably got more spray on the clematis than most of the others. I haven't ruled out some other cause, such as clematis wilt or rabbit damage yet. I'll take a closer look when it stops raining.

The sprayer that you used, have you ever put weed killer in it? If so there's your problem.

Good call Dan. I hadn't thought of that. I always rinse my sprayers thoroughly after every use. However, this sprayer has never had weed killer in it.

Mike, I have several clematis entwined with roses and spray them with Bayer. I've never had that reaction.

The worse thing I do to my clematis is cut off the wrong branch at the base and remove the whole thing :) Why do they always look dead? Luckily they grow back from the base.

I have not sprayed clematis with it yet but I did spray a coneflower and it survived just fine. Maybe it was just a coincidence and what happened was clematis wilt. That is not an educated suggestion, just a guess.

I have hit a purple clematis like that one with it and the flowers turned brown and showed damage. I assumed it was the fungicide I know my wave petunias do the same thing (they are planted under rose trees). They did not show the same damage as yours did so I am not sure.

It does not look like a burn ... Check it very attentivly.Probably somebody chewed it off. Slugs do that at roots level unfortunately. Happened here a couple of times:(. Also there is something which is called I think "clematis wilt". Similar symptoms and may kill relatively young clematis fast. Maria

Thanks everyone. I was able to take a closer look since we didn't have rain today. Looks like the problem was caused by rabbits. Aren't they cute?
