Typical mosiac virus symptoms. That could account for its slow start this year. It's not contagious so if the marking don't bother you and the bush performs good for you, keep it. It cannot be cured except by a heat treatment process which is expensive and can result in the loss of the plant.
I've had mosiac virused bushes that have lasted years providing lots of blooms. Cold winters seem to supress the symptoms which don't appear until the temperatures warm up.
At least that's my experience.

This is not something your rose caught in your garden. It's passed on from plant to plant in the budding process.
If either the bud wood or the root stock were virused, all the plants from the virused material will be infected as will other plants on down the road including rooted cuttings.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I had a sneaking suspicion it was something like that, since I've been following the many threads on RMV. Well, there's a first time for everything, I guess. And I suppose I will keep her, unless the whole bush starts to look like that. The very first bloom is just opening up now, so that is a lot slower than the rest - they've all finished already.
And also thank you for reassuring me that the rose didn't catch it in my garden, and that it isn't contagious. But what if I forget to disinfect my pruners (I confess, I don't always) and prune another rose after - can it spread that way? And do people usually notify the vendor that a certain variety they are selling is virused?

Judith, there is a lot of controversy about the RMV and is it infectious to other roses or not. Some new data suggest that there is a possibility to infect other roses through roots. The only one real study done to investigate is it possible to infect with RMV by pruners gave negative results. However we always have to remember that it only shows that in the conditions of this trial, with chosen RMV (there are several) and with roses and weather that was in this trial, RMV didn't infect other roses through pruning. Nobody can give you more definite answer at this point.
I personally, being familiar with how infectious are other mosaic viruses (not RMV), but for example, figs mosaic or peony mosaic, am very skeptical about the idea that RMV is not infectious. We just don't know for sure at this stage.
Based on this, I always try to get rid of RMV infected roses, productive or not. I want my garden clean. The only exception is when certain varieties are not available virus free, but this is all different story. Actually it is always a good practice to sanitize your pruners between different roses. RMV is not the only virus that infects roses. There are plenty of others, people are just more aware of this one.

Thanks so much, Olga. Right now it is in a pot, so I will keep it away from other roses, to be safe, and I won't forget to disinfect the pruners that I use. I just want to see how she blooms this summer, and then maybe I will get rid of it (and then REALLY scrub that pot with bleach). Since she would have to spend the winter in my garage, I guess it's better to start out next spring with a new one. There's always another waiting in the wings....

I bought a gorgeous J & P Redgold from Home Depot, and when the heat came, so did the mosaic patterned leaves. Since it has affected only a few sets of leaves, I just trim them off, put them in the garbage, disinfect the pruners, and continue enjoying the beautiful flushes of blooms the rose puts out there. So far there have been no other shrubs that show the same symptoms, and it hasn't seemed to bother the bush aside from a few discolored leaves.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. Obviously, this is not going to be an easy decision for me to make LOL O.k., then, I will enjoy the blooms that she puts out this summer, and then decide what to do in the fall.

Thank you ALL for your info! Judith, glad you posted this w/pics. I have never seen RMV in my garden, but I have 2 exhibiting RMV now (a little different pattern, but yellow markings all the same). I've also seen Baldo Villega's site on diseases/pests.
Margaret Merrill and Henry Nevard. MM was supposedly an Austin rose (from the Austin site a few years ago), so I won't miss it if I do move or replace. HN has ALWAYS been stingy, but never exhibited the markings til this year. :0) Phyl

Glad I could be of help:) Never saw RMV in person either before now. This forum is great for finding answers to questions you haven't even got around to asking yet! FWIW, years ago when I lived with my parents I planted several roses along one side of their house, including a Double Delight that first showed RMV symptoms in its second or third year of growth.

Twenty years later (with no proper care), it's still there, although it only had one flower this year. (I was the one who wanted roses, so they haven't had any proper care since I left.)

I think my Angel face probably has RMV. It's a 2 year old own root that I ordered last Fall. This pattern appeared this Spring. It appeared right after I sprayed it for the first time so at first I thought it was from that. The blooms so far have been small and funny looking.

Mary, that's not "probably" that is classic RMV, especially from what I can see of the leaves in the background.
