Lambert Closse, Maiden's Blush, The Mayflower, etc.

I'm thinking about purchasing these roses next spring. Can anyone comment on their experience growing these roses in zone 4?

*Lambert Closse

*Maiden's Blush

*The Mayflower

*Morden Blush

*Frontenac

*Louis Jolliet

*Marie Bugnet

I grew Frontenac in zone 2a for one year before we moved. It survived the winter well. I had 5 of them for a long hedge. Lots of flowers and no disease. However, the twiggy growth was not good for a hedge. I wouldn't get it again just for that reason - long branches sticking 2 feet over the main hedge - looked a mess.

I just bought Lambert Closse this year. The flower is VERY pretty, not what one would expect for a hardy rose. The flower is larger than Morden Blush's rose. Lots of petals swirled around. Love it. Mine doesn't have all that many flowers yet - but it's a new plant. It's supposed to get better each year. I really like it!

Morden Blush is the best of the three roses that I have from your list. Covered in flowers just like a floribunda. They last a long time. The flowers are just beautifully swirled - like a corsage. They're about 3". Here in zone 3a - I don't winter protect and the plant grows to about 4 feet tall every year. My daughter calls it the wedding rose, because it's completely covered in roses.

I know you specifically asked about experience in zone 4 and I can't comment on the zone other than the David Austin website says that the Mayflower is extremely tough & hardy. It was introduced for the grand opening of a rose garden north of New York City. I can tell you that this rose is one of the most disease resistant rose I have. The leaves are very different, with alot of texture and remind me of the leaves on Indigo, or Theresa Bugnet. The bush also has a nice shape and it is a sturdy rose, not at all floppy.

My list of recommendations from my zone 4 experience for ease of growing, hardiness and no fuss: Alba Maxima Alba Semi-plena Alika Applejack (the only truly *cane hardy* Buck rose IME) Belle de Crecy Belle Poitevine Champagne Arches, AKA Nancy Parker Fantin Latour Felix Leclerc Fru Dagmar Hastrup Great Maiden's Blush Hebe's Lip Henri Martin Henry Kelsey John Cabot John Davis Leda Marie Victorin Mme. Hardy Mme Legras de St.Germain Morden Blush Rosa glauca Rosa villosa pomifera Rose de Rescht Stanwell Perpetual Sydonie Therese Bugnet William Baffin various Spinnossimas, "Scot's Rose", gallicas, albas, rugosas (careful on the hybrid rugosas - some can be very tender.) There are many, many other roses that I do succeed in growing here, but if your newbie growers are looking for less disease problems, less pruning work, and less winter protection routine then I would pare my list down to these. BTW, on your list of possibles, I also grow Morden Sunrise, Alexander Mackenzie, Marie Bugnet and Martin Frobisher and an awful lot of the Buck roses. They don't make the hardiness cut although they're all lovely. I have a lot of die back on each and every one of them each year. I guess as I get older, I'm getting tired of hard pruning and waiting for the "bounce back" - or not. Right now I'm looking at a lot of beds with very little rose left above ground in them, cut back as recently as they were and just starting to re-grow. Not much of a garden at the moment! The season is so short here that a rose which can start out full size is a definite advantage I'm beginning to think. I'm currently eying my collection more critically with a goal of less fuss, more reward in future. (Sorry if I sound pessimistic, but given my current state of mind, your post struck a chord.) Suggestions for best continuous bloom rose?

Aaron, some of my roses do bloom in part shade, including Rouge Royale. I've found no difference in any blooms frying here, whether the rose grows in part shade or full sun. It's a desert here and the air is very dry. This does as much damage as sun and heat, making almost all roses quickly crunchy. We have been in a continuous heat wave since June 9, and no rose will do well in that, whether in shade or not. I wish the roses wouldn't even try to bloom when it gets so hot and dry. We had no rain for almost three months until a few days ago, and finally, we got one night of rain. No more since. Today, finally, we drop into the 80s. For a few days, then it goes back up, which I hope proves incorrect. I've grown Jude the Obscure (huge) for 17 years, and while it is an exquisite, unique rose, I don't find that it reblooms well, certainly not like Munstead Wood, so I hope you eventually do acquire Munstead Wood. Other great bloomers for me, which I've probably already mentioned (sorry) are Julia Child, of course, Tamora, Golden Celebration, Boscobel, Love Song, and good bloomers, Rouge Royale, Augusta Luise, Ebb Tide, Twilight Zone, Bernstein-Rose, Ballerina, and who did I miss--ha? You will have fun, if you find him, with the challenging Prince, which slogged along for years, and produced nice blooms, when it felt like it, on a pretty little bush. After The Prince's third transplant, it perked up, liked the place, and began a slow "expansion", which exploded about three years ago, when The Prince put pedal to the metal, blooming almost nonstop. The blooms even got darker. This rose has gotten so big that I'm wondering if it has gone own root, or what other major factor has caused such a transformation. Diane

This is Meidland Turbo, it is new this year and was purchased on a whim. I saw it from a distance and had never seen such a thick beast of a rose still in a pot and that early in the spring. I just had to drag him home and see what he became. Although I'm not overly impressed with it "up close" as the blooms are not spectacular. From a distance, as a landscape shrub he is impressive. The blooms last a long time and the colour is strong enough you will notice him from quite a distance. Here is a pic of the bloom and the shrub. I finally uncovered all my roses this morning and it seems like most of them have a fair amount of green canes. Iceberg was the only one to have a bit of mold on a couple of canes. Should these canes be cut off now, or will they be ok now that the air and sunlight can get to them? Gillian, I re-read your post on which teas you had that were hardy, and you mentioned that Tropicana was one of them. Walmart has them in bags now, and it's mighty tempting. How did you like it, and do you have a pic maybe? Carol, have you been able to check your roses out yet? Hopefully it's all good news. Laurie

Morden Blush is outstanding here. Blooms continuously and flowers last for weeks.

I just got Lambert Closse, and so far it's only had one small bloom, but if it's even half as good as Morden Blush I'll keep it.
