White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth?

I ordered this rose from Ashdown in the early spring. I potted it and it has grown from a tiny thing to a healthy, 4 ft. long caned bush. It has not bloomed at all. I'm wondering if it was mismarked and it's acutally a climber. It's several canes are long and lanky with small, pointed leaves. Where the canes are flopping over, it is putting out new growth like a climber does when the canes are trained horizontally. If anyone has experience with this rose, please comment on your plant and any similarites or differences to what I'm growing. Thanks, Buff

Mine was new this spring. It was a twig and now is 2 & 1/2 foot and I would call it a constant bloomer.

My white Maman Cochet from Ash... ordered 3 years ago took 2 years to bloom. It is actually a tiny pink very fragrant climber with a button eye. I believe it is June Ann. If it is a once bloomer, it does have a long season here in Florida. It has a lovely form too.

We've grown WPIRDM for several years, from a cutting collected (with permission) at the Sacramento City Cemetery.
From the beginning, it has been a compact, rounded, twiggy bush of perhaps 3.5 ft.
Never OUT of bloom.

Leaves are very long, narrow, sharply pointed, and very dark green.

Randy, very nice pictures! Thanks for posting! "White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth" is such a beautiful rose, your band looks so good! Lovely photo of Heritage, makes the wait for the first flower of my band to open even harder. It just seems to sit there and is in no hurry at all to open its first bud. The peony is gorgeous! The contrast between the dark green leaves makes the huge, perfect, pink flower stand out even more.

Wow Randy, that looks fantastic! It reminds me of the band of Eugene de Beauharnais that Vintage sent me last year. He was such a healthy little trouper and started to bloom perfect blossoms way before I suspected that he would. I love the colour of this rose! Beautiful.

This has not, thus far, been one of our largest Chinas. For instance, it is significantly smaller than 'Louis Phillipe,' tho it was planted 2 years earlier. Ours is several years old, now. It's probably 3- or 3.5-ft. tall, and maybe 4-ft wide. It's possible that, in a hotter climate, it might grow some bigger, but for us, it is moderate. OH -- and it is at its very best here during the winter. It thumbs its nose at our occasional periods of frost. Just blooms even more. Jeri

I've become much more disenchanted with selecting rose varieties than ever before - I'm not sure why, maybe because I'm still limited to my own window ledge and haven't been home to my old garden in a few years, but I don't think I'll be ordering much this season. I'm dismayed at the closing of Sequoia and may try to get a few rare things from them before the end. It always seems that the most promising varieties are quite out of reach, so for now, I think I'll concentrate my efforts on breeding more than acquiring and see if I can't make the rose I'm craving but simply cannot buy. At work, I'll continue adding to the collection of wonderful Chinese rose species and cultivars; this is one of my little pet projects to increase public (and institutional) awareness of these amazing and largely well-adapted plants. Marianne (if you read this), do you really feel that both helenae cultivars are equal in hardiness, and that your zones 4-5 are warmer than ours? From reading which roses do well where in Scandinavia, I was under the impression that a zone 4-5 hardy rose where you live is roughly equivalent to one at my home in Minnesota, also zone 4-5. I was also fairly sure I understood that 'Lykkefund' is less hardy than 'Hybrida', which hopefully is soon on its way to Ashdown from Europe courtesy of a certain GW member! Stefan

I got mine this Spring as well, as a band. Same thing....very twiggy, long canes, but it is always blooming. I love it. I'm just going to trim back the long stems and see if it will bush out more.

Buff, that description doesn't sound like my 'White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth' at all.
Mine arrived this past spring as a band from Vintage.
Just like thonotorose said, mine is now 2 1/2 ft tall and blooms very frequently.
It's canes are thin and VERY china-like, as are the leaves, but the canes on mine never "flop" over like you mentioned. The canes on mine are upright & fairly rigid to be so relatively thin.
This rose is so wonderfully china-like and the color so rich ... it is very "oriental" in appearance to me.

Yes. What Randy has is undoubtedly what I have.

This is a typical China Rose, and really a Chinese China Rose -- quite ancient.
If what you have is growing like a Climber, it is probably NOT WPIRDM.

For those concerned that they may have a mis-labelled plant -- If it's not blooming, an image of the bloom doesn't help you.

So, the link below will take you to a group of images of buds, stem, and foliage.
If what you have doesn't look like this, it is likely mis-labelled.

I intended to get an image of the entire plant, but we are in the middle of a record-setting heatwave.
In true China fashion, WPIRDM has shut down, to wait for better times.
I don't blame it in the least. I feel the same way.
