Climbing Rose replacement

My one climbing rose, R. 'Climbing Pinkie' had to be removed in the Spring because of RRD (see pic of CP in her prime).

The removal was so traumatic, I considered replacing her with a non-rose vine, but some of the pain has receded now, and I think that I will chance it again with another rose.

What climbing rose would you suggest as a replacement? I have a no spray policy for roses, so it must be very resistant to Blackspot. If remontant, the color must be compatible with the watermelon-colored blooms of the Crape Myrtles.

I'm very partial to VIKING QUEEN. I planted it in my MIL's postage stamp sized yard and she has been delighted with the disease resistance, vigor, and beauty of flower/fragrance. She has it growing up and around her porch. The medium warm pink flowers are large, old fashioned in appearance, and nicely fragrant. The warm pink color should harmonize nicely with the watermelon-colored flowers on your Crape Myrtles.

Another option is AWAKENING, the doubled sport of New Dawn. The cameo pink flowers are very pretty. Excellent black spot resistance, although you'll be sacrificing on fragrance (not to mention the killer thorns).

Jamie- Thank you for your wonderful compliment. This is my favorite garden and my kids, my husband and most visitors agree. The irony is this is the garden I have spent the least amount of time on. Ive plunked things in, generally extras without a real home and somewhere along the way it developed a cohesive theme. The fact that it is the best looking and most enjoyable garden with 1/3 of the work of my other gardens is a true exercise in humility! I just cant wait to find the right bench to place in there and if I can get the native foxgloves from the yard I grew up in to bloom, I will be ecstatic. I'm looking at small clematis, has anyone ever ordered from Chalk Hill Clematis? They have a 50% going out of business sale, the clematis will ship in the fall. Any thoughts?

I am far from an expert but what about Seven Sisters? I have read it blooms once but also that it blooms all summer in some zones, so I am not sure about that. Otherwise it seems like it might be a match.

KJM, sometimes there are local sources that would have some of these roses, but you have to hunt around. Occasionally Lowes has had some Explorers or Kordes roses, but it varies nationally. By all means check local gardening sources to see what might be available - I always believe in supporting local stores - but don't expect much beyond Knockouts and a few common Austin and Hybrid Tea roses at most places.Most of these local roses are likely to be grafted onto a rootstock like Dr. Huey if you find them. Most of us end up buying roses online if we have particular ones we want. Mad Gallica's right that Palatine has excellent roses, but being bareroot grafted roses they won't ship again until fall and that's too late to plant in our cold zones for this year. In fact, I'm done planting roses for this year as I worry that they won't establish well before winter sets in. You could get away in July with planting a large potted rose from a local source now, or a hardy rose like the Explorers from anywhere you can find them, but I wouldn't do anything smaller than a gallon rose this late in the year. High Country Roses is a good source for a lot of Explorers and hardy roses, as is Northland. Chamblees is very reasonable for shipping gallons, and Roses Unlimited has a multitude of roses available. If you don't find the roses you're looking for, you can shop online over the fall and winter and have it delivered in April next year to get a good start on the season. Cynthia

Lilyfinch I bought Nahema because of Fragrancenutter's beautiful pics . Unfortunately my plant did not bloom much and the blooms blew away in a day (Heritage is one of its parents ) , cool weather had the best bloom & fragrance . It also grew 3 ft laterals before blooming on top . After 3 years I got tired of it and s/p it .

Spazzy, since I'm in Florida, I can't help you at all, but I did want to gush over your arbor and all your gorgeous shrubbery. What a wonderful place to come home to. By all means, get another rose for your fantastic arbor. So pretty!

"Renae" for a rose with a similar effect, small pink blend roses in great profusion.
"Renae" shows an excellant hue of pink with lilac tones,
- a scent that reminds me of ripe watermelon that pervades the air on warm humid days.
-attractive foliage
-3' wide blossoms in clusters, with a style of bloom, and growth habit, similar to a Hybrid Musk.
good repeat when promptly deadheaded.
It is healthy enough here, to be grown in a public no-spray rose garden, BUT our primary environmental conditions favor powdery mildew in spring, and blackspot only moderatly, usually in the Autumn. You could post back here and ask about its health in your area.
I wish oh I wish that the climbing form of Mrs. B.R. Cant was in commerce, sigh.
Theres always "Mme. Alfred Carriere", white with a pink flush to its heart.

I also just wanted to comment on how beautiful your garden view is. You've received some great suggestions. I've heard very good things also about Clair Matin, although I don't know if it's pliable enough for what you have in mind and also don't know about the hardiness. But one thing I know, I can's imagine anything but a rose on that arbor. I also have Cl. Pinkie, a young rose. I'm looking forward to the day when it becomes as beautiful as yours was. I'm so sorry you lost it; that must have been so upsetting.

Not often seen theres a beauty at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens that seems to be quite disease resistant and has a good repeat Inspiration nice fragrance too. Has New Dawn as a parent. Iv'e been watching it for years and it always leaves a good impression

I put in an arbor this year and planted an Awakening on the east side and a Harlekin on the west side. They were bands I put in gallon pots until the roots poked out of the bottom. Since we've had a very unusual cool, wet, summer I planted them at the arbor instead of a larger pot. Awakening has only put on about 6 inches of new growth in the last 5 weeks but bloomed like crazy. Harlekin got right down to business and has grown 2 feet with a fair amount of blooms. Awakening is getting a lot less sun but appears healthy. I understand both roses are very disease resistant. I hesitated to post since I'm a newbie and my climate is so different from yours, but hey, if I'm off base someone here will speak up and I'll learn something!

There are just a few OGR's in my Florida garden that have been disease resistant so far and Awakening is one of them. It also has been one of the most vigorous.
Seems to be spider mite resistant so far unlike MANY of the others.

The only other thing to note is that her branches seem more horizontal (3-4') than vertical. I have not begun vertical training yet so perhaps things will change.

I really like the pink climber Jonkheer Monk from Vintage Gardens. It's been 2-3 years in my garden and starting to bloom very well. It has a beautiful fragrance. Also, I would second the recommendations of Awakening and Clair Matin, despite the slight fragrance. I've seen the older Austin rose Lucetta grown as a climber in southern California. Also, Felicia makes a beautiful climber -- there was an English gardener on this board who posted a stunning photo of Felicia on an arch in his garden.
