I'd say no. Not unless it's a really big pot, and is a big enough pot really keeping it in bounds?

I'm growing it in a pot to avoid winterkill. While it is still in a fairly small pot, there are practical upper limits to how much pot it can eventually get. It does seem to object to being rootbound, as much as any of the permanent pot plants.

My BD is in the ground and is approx 5x5. I grew it from a cutting and it was only comfortable in a pot for a short time. It became root-bound quickly and it was an unattractive potted plant because of its wide, rigid growth, IMHO.

I have Belinda's Dream on fortuniana rootstock and it is pretty big. Maybe 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Also the canes are sturdy and not so flexible. I would pick something else for your pot.

I grew Belinda's Dream for several years, and I like it a lot.
One of the best, most consistent, and strongest fragrances too, per my nose.
But, it got really big over time.
And, in my opinion, it doesn't have anywhere near the beautiful, relaxed, natural plant shape that my Duchesse de Brabant has.
I think it would look kind of awkward in a container after a while.
Great rose though.
Lots of good traits.
Perfect for cutting and bringing inside for a vase.
Blooms like crazy.
Shapely bloom form.
Like a hybrid tea, but with much, much better manners.

Darn! I lost my SDLM over the summer while I was up north and I'm looking for something else to try in that pot that is pink and has a non tea fragrance (I am one of the unfortunate ones who cannot detect the tea scent very well). :-(

I have BD in a pot but it is a 30 gallon pot. She is maybe five years old (I know I brought her from my old house) and about 4 x 4. Blooms well.

I have a 2 yo BD and I keep it cut back short; it seems to help control those floppy stems and doesn't seem to affect blooming. So maybe I'd try BD in a pot but others would probably be happier. HOw about Mystic Beauty from RU, if you like SDLM?

Peggy, if you loved SDLM then Mystic Beauty is the answer! Beautiful blooms, fragrance, and good vigor. I'm also growing Souvenir de St. Ann's and have the impression SHE is going to make a much larger bush.

I have just planted Marchesa Boccella in a pot after researching for a very smelly pink pot rose. I also have Mystic Beauty, but in the ground. You can't go wrong anywhere you put MB.

There is no substitute for SdlM :-)

Gee, Mystic Beauty is very nice. Will it be as disease resistant as SDLM? I do not spray my roses any more. Been there, done that. Randy may be right, I may have to just get another sdlm...

It is (I understand, hmf says something different) a sport of SDLM; Pat Henry says on her website it's the best rose she grows. Mine is still in a pot, but it blooms a lot and its blossoms are wonderful. No bs, so far ... Gean

I don't know how moss roses do in your area, but Salet is a fragrant pink that reblooms a lot and is very pretty. Something tells me moss roses and Florida don't go together but I don't have any concrete knowledge of that. If Austins do well for you (again I have doubts) Sister Elizabeth is a beautiful and fragrant pink that stays compact and blooms a lot. It would be great in a pot.

I am not convinced that SDLM and Mystic Beauty are not really the same rose. I have them side by side and cannot tell the difference. I know MB is supposed to be a sport, but for the life of me, I don't see it. I love both of them anyway.

Duch, I'm curious about how hard you prune BD to stop the floppy stems. I've pruned it to really stout wood, and it still produced 24 inch stems for every flush. I came to the conclusion that the plant was really stimulated by pruning, so I went back to doing less. Here the first flush that's totally procumbent. Would you mind telling me all the details about your plant - how big, how old, orientation (how much sun), all that stuff. I will say that one of my BD's is planted in brutal all day baking sun, and it doesn't produce anything floppy. That may be the answer: fry it.

First rose to be named a Texas Superstar tm and to receive prestigious EarthKind tm designation. Gorgeous shrub rose with large, fragrant and very double pink blossoms. Successive flushes of bloom spring to frost. So disease tolerant that fungicide sprays seldom required. Outstanding performance even in highly alkaline clay soils. A near perfect landscape rose.

Cass, my only Bel Dream is 2 1/2 years old and is planted on the south west side of the house. It is situated between a line of pine trees to the west of it and the house to the east of it. It gets good overhead sun but doesn't bake, for sure.

Here are some pics taken this morning. The bush is about 3' tall; it's planted on a slight incline so the picture angle looks a little odd, sorry. The growth from the pruning to stout wood is vertical. Its foliage is clean.

That's interesting about yours in baking sun not flopping. This is the only way I've figured out how to control the flopping on mine, pruning it way back. You can tell how severely I cut it back after the last flush.

Now that I think about it, the canes that were the floppiest were the ones adjacent to the deck and house - not much sun coming from that direction.

Gean, thanks so much for humoring me. My row of BD's are about 3 times the size of your plant. You have definitely gotten those canes to work. I see that your BD also produces min. 24 inch canes for each new flush. I think if I planted something to somewhat screen the base I'd be more comfortable pruning harder. I remember the first post I read here, someone mentioned not pruning BD much at all. I do really thin out during the winter pruning. Here, hard summer trimming is problematic because of our annual drought from April through October. We need all the leaves we can keep!

I have three Belinda's Dreams and they are not floppy at all. I prune them generously after each flush and I cut off any of the canes that grow low and parallel to the ground. I love my BDs. They are the ones that I cut most consistently for the vase because they are always in bloom, look great and smell so good. Shelley

I was there just 2 weeks ago and I didn't recognize it until an employee identified it for me. My comment was "I'm gonna have to move mine if it gets that big", lol. It was about 6-7 feet tall X 4 feet wide and FILLED with blooms and fragrance.

Mine is just a baby but blooms fantastically.Not something you want in a pot unless you are a bonsai genius.

BTW Scrivners didn't have any OGR's just hybrids when I visited. I succumbed to a pretty face "Outrageous" and regret it. Beautiful blooms but losing leaves to blackspot at an incredible rate. I have about 15 OGR's and never a blackspot seen yet. Impossible to purchase locally though.

Well, I decided to give it a go and try it in a container. I got a big pot so we'll see. If I can keep my teas and chinas happy cut back maybe I can keep BD in bounds too. :-)

Jean Darling, I have Mystic Beauty and SDLM (In fact, I have five SDLM) and I can tell a difference, even the health of the MB is better than the SDLMs, (IMHO). Now maybe, just maybe I don't have MB and I have some other really healthy rose :-) but mine does so well, grew so fast and does not get mildew like SDLM. Health is similar to SdSAnne's.

Cass, my Belinda Dreams were so floppy and so huge, that DH cut one down to 12 inches (almost killed it) but it rebounded (3-4 years ago) and has not had floppy canes since but it has never gotten as big as was before, either.

My BD was a big disappointment. In my garden, the blooms were NEVER pretty! They were either damaged by thrips or they balled. In 3 years, I don't think I ever had a bloom that I could cut and proudly give to someone. Every bloom had brown damage. It was a major disappointment that I finally shovel pruned. I felt so guilty and unworthy and that I was doing something wrong since BD is an Earthkind and everyone raves over her. I got over it and decided to plant all teas and Chinas. Buff

Buff, many of my blooms have that brown discoloration and I'm not really fond of the form of the plant as a whole, but when the blooms DO look good, oh they are so pretty and make such a good cut flower! And the plant is very healthy and vigorous. So I'm putting up with her. For now. ;)

My Belinda's Dream does not do well here for me. It doesn't get more than about 2 ft tall and doesn't have more than a few flowers all spring and summer. I was surprised to see that it was actually being tested in a rose test program in the area. I may get rid of it.
