JB's prefer some roses over others

Have you noticed this?

For example they absolutely devour the Apothecary, leaving brownish leaves filled with holes. Same for Jacques Cartier plus since it is remontant the flowers as well.

But I have other roses where there are no JB's. And they seem to all have glossy foliage. And since I have many Kordes roses most of them are beetle free as they normally have that type of foliage. Unlike the soft green leaves like a Gallica. Then there roses that only attract beetles to the flowers, like Night Owl. None or few on the foliage. And Antique '89, same.

I must say I've not been diligent in collecting them letting them feed as they will. Maybe I should prune off the badly attacked canes so they will regrow healthy canes. After the JB's leave. Will that work?

Hi Jim,
Yes, I have noticed that. I don't know why some are left
alone while others are not. Does anyone know?
They seem to really like my 'Seafoam'. They haven't been too
bad this year, yet, but I wonder if the birds have been
getting them-suddenly there are tons of birds in the garden.

VikingQueen told me that she would cut her rugosa buds
off so that the bush would bloom after the JB's left.
That was so long ago, I am glad I wrote it down!

In any case, if the canes are damaged, I would cut them
back.

They seem to gravitate to yellow and lighter colored roses.I've been thinking that the reason I have so many fewer (not sure if that is correct grammar!)this year is because I sp'ed a yellow rose this spring (it was diseased) that used to be covered with JBs. Maybe it was attracting them.

This year, they seem to be in love with Ebb Tide, which is a dark rose. I've found the most on that one. And for some reason they are chewing holes in the buds of Ink Spots and leaving them looking like they've been drilled. Or maybe that is another pest, who knows.

Well, now I'm very perplexed. My neighbor is very well-meaning, and grows lots of flowers and veggies/herbs. He told me yesterday that the spray he had made up (and asked me if I wanted him to spray my gardens with) was an Ortho product. He said it was pretty innocuous (made of natural ingredients and not toxic to bees etc.) I asked him the name of it, and he kept referring to it as an Ortho product....said it would keep the JBs at bay for a few weeks. He said that it was safe enough that if it got on you it was ok, and that it is sprayed on veggies and fruits too. Today he stopped by to ask how it was working so far. I told him that there were many dead JBs, but that there were some new ones too (though not anywhere near as many as usual). He said that they would chew on the leaves or buds/blooms and die in a few days etc. I looked on the Ortho website, and the only concentrate that I see there that says kills JBs as they chew and suck on the plants is Ortho Systemic Insect Killer Concentrate. 8% acephate and .5% fenbutatin oxice, whatever they are. Bottom line is under ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS it says that it is toxic to birds, mammals, fish, aquatic invertebrates, etc., and highly toxic to bees! AARGH!!! I knew it was too good to be true. Phyl

I think that the thrips do prefer the lighter colored flowers rather than the really dark ones like the dark reds or deep dark pinks, etc...I have inspected many various flowers just to test that theory out that I had heard as well. But in the long run it doesn't matter as you spray all the roses the same way with the same stuff anyway. I use Merit when necessary which is usually one time per thrip season and that seems to keep them under control enough to suit me. They are not ALL dead, but enough are gone that I can live with the rest. And, I can do all my 200+ bushes with about 1 1/2 gallon of spray because I spray only the buds and open blooms of the bush, not the entire plant as it is unnecessary and is a waste of spray since the thrip only lives in/on the buds. Spraying just flowers and buds saves spray, money, time, and beneficial insects. Again, just my two cents worth of advice...... John

Whirlpool or Air Baths? Is one preferred over the other?

There is one jetted tub manufacturer that has gotten rid of the noise and the tubes that hold water between baths (so then the water gets gunky and you would never want it in your bath). It is now called purewaterbaths.com. I have lusted after one of their tubs, but can't get in and out of a tub, so can't have one. They solved the problems by making each jet its own little electric motor. It cuts down on vibration in the tub, since no water is being pumped from drain to jet to jet to pump. Water enters around an individual jet and exits through that jet. You can easily disassemble each jet and clean them after use. That means you can use oils or bubble bath. There are no tubes holding water to go stale or mucky. Electric motors hum. Pumps vibrate and roar. These do not pump water around between the jets. No pumps. Yet you have jets to swirl around and let the water massage you. Be sure to ask if they actually hit you and massage muscles, the designs of some of their tubs make me wonder. Air is a more gentle and soothing experience, I have heard. There have been threads here about some of the brands. Do a search using google asking for a Garden Web review of air baths and you may see more than a search you may have done here in the Bath forum. You did search for what has already been discussed, right? I know of at least one ongoing discussion in which air tub buyers have discussed brands and have waited for remodels to finish to see what each of them thinks of their brands.

rosy, I started out with netting for all the reasons given above. I already had a split rail fence and just planted the posts to line up with it. My situation may have been different because they habitually used my secluded "back forty" to sleep and have their babies. It wasn't a problem until I actually wanted to clear it out and plant things down there. I didn't use the bags with the netting as I wanted it to be invisible. Well, it was invisible to the deer as well as they just jumped right through it. Then I put up metal fencing which they also jumped through breaking all my wooden posts. So I put up a double metal fence with the bags. Sorry if they're not aesthetically pleasing, but I know they worked on preventing them coming onto my upper lever last year before I invested in the water scarecrow and finally put up a decorative fence there.. Anyway, I couldn't face having to replace the wooden posts a THIRD time. Of course, they found the three areas I didn't think they could get to, so they now have metal fencing. You may not have these issues because they haven't discovered your house yet. A hedge also works. I have that where my fence is only 6" high and they won't breach it as they can't jump high AND wide.

Honestly Jim, they will eat any bloom of any color and then have the foliage for desert if there are enough of them. I haven't had them attack the canes, just the foliage and that will grow back.

It's interesting that they've been favoring Ebb Tide and Night Owl, two roses that supposedly have a spicy/clove scent (I haven't smelled them myself). This could be similar to the fragrance of a rugosa, which is high on the list of their favorite foodstuff, probably because they ate it in their native Japan. So the new Carruth purples probably smell just like home cookin' :) It might all stem from the Rosa californica in their background.

JBs prefer orgy spots. Where pheromones were left by previous JB orgy participants. A strong wash down will take the pheromones away and maybe give the canes a chance.
Me? I'd never take a potentially healthy cane down. If it were chomped, I'd take it off just below the chomp.
Reason? The replacement cane, if you're lucky enough to get it this year, is less likely to harden off and make it through winter.

If they are hungry enough they will munch anything, but my jbs seem to prefer yellow roses and those with a strong perfume. They don't seem at all interested in my roses with no scent. Thankfully, this year they seem fascinated with my Rose of Sharon and have been far fewer on the rose bushes.

Jim, if you have few blooms and the JBs are doing a lot of harm to the foliage, this seems like an appropriate situation to use an insecticide (no flowers, no pollinators to murder). One of the Bayer products contains only cyfluthrin. They sell it as RTU or as spray concentrate. Cyfluthrin will kill beetles and it repelled beetles from treated linden foliage for 19 days.

I've noticed this too. JBs love my Canadian Explorer roses - mainly John Cabot and William Baffin. I've found just a few on 'Illusion' and 'Viking Queen', both of which have glossy leaves. I used to have 'Reine Violette', but gave it away 'cause the JBs gorged on this rose so badly! I couldn't take the sight of it and besides, the rose, to me, was just okay.

Right now their favorite in my garden is New Dawn. Probably because I can't reach them up there to pick off or spray. So I mixed up some Bayer into a recycled sprayer that you can switch to "stream". Problem solved.

I am being very diligent in spraying each and every beetle I see, going out several times/day. My goal is to avoid the pileup, therefore, hopefully less beetles.

Jim for me its my rosa rogosas first, they always attack them first and most. I have a first year plant robusto rose which is a glossy kordes, they seem to like that as well. But they do eat anything, the really like my corn stalks and potatoe plants and bean plants all the rest of my flowers (except lillium and hermocallis and hostas). Also seem to enjoy rasberry and blackberry foliage but seem to leave the fruit only, which is ok by me. ITs been a lighter year than normal here, just picked off a few dozen yesterday, nothing like the hundreds some years.
