Hieracium maculatum 'Chocolate Dip'- anyone grow?

Hieracium maculatum 'Chocolate Dip' (aka 'Leopard')- spotted hawkweed.

Wondering what you thought of it? Is it weedy at all? Read somewhere that it could become a pest since it reseeds readily. I recently got some seeds of this plant and am wondering if I should grow them or not. Kind of looks like a weed I have seen around here, LOL! Would like to hear your opinion of it though.

I 'grew' this for awhile....probably growing still in my old garden :-) Not sure if I purchased the plant intentionally - might have, cuz I bought a LOT of different things that caught my eye - or if it hitchhiked in with another. Yes, it was weedy......very weedy. In fact ALL hieracium are listed as noxious weeds in WA state but that does not mean they are restricted from sale if deemed to be "ornamental". If you can stop the plant from flowering it will help but IMO, not worth the effort. Just don't plant it, it's a pest!

Thanks much for the info gardengal! Yes, that was the reason I thought to ask- saw that some other Hieraciums were listed as weeds in WA (though didn't see maculatum on the list I looked at). My philosophy is why plant something that is going to take over your garden when there are so many other nice plants out there that look the same and act better. I DO NOT need more weedy plants in my garden!

I live in Austin and I've gotten fruit from my tree every year. In more recent years, the freuit has become smaller. One year I decided to prune some of the blooming fruits, they way you would a peach tree. I broke off some of the fruit buds when it started to bloom, the fruit left on the buds was larger. We typically pick the fruit when they are closerto orange than yellow. They tend to be MUCH sweeter. We've made jelly with the loquats for years too. We typically use a peach, plum or apricot jelly recipe with lemons and peel instead of added pectin. Either way, the jelly is wonderful. If you choose not to take the peel off, make sure to rinse and cut it well. The fruit has a layer of fuzz all over it and the skin does not really break down that much. Overall, yes, it is a good deal of work, but in the end you will have a fabulous jar of jelly/jam/preserves! Enjoy with some homemade bread!!!.. OOH.. one more thing. If you don't wan to have to stand over a pot and stir... check out our bread machine - mine has a jelly/jam cycle. It is a looser preserve but still great :) Happy Cooking!

You won't get chocolate mint from seeds. You must take cuttings or any runners, preferably with roots, and they'll start a new plant for you. As for uses - sprinkle some on ice cream or into milk coffee, or any chocolate drink. Add to any chocolate recipe - cookies, cakes, icings, mousse, cheesecakes, whatever - anywhere you want a chocolate/mint flavour. Crystallise the leaves or coat them in melted chocolate and use them as decorations for cakes and desserts, or just as an after-dinner treat.

David - Isabelle Rose is close to the ultimate shape I'm wanting. Petals are wide enough to show a pattern, and they're already curling some at the tips. I'll have to do some crosses with things like Lillian's Vapor Trail to get the extra length. I already own Rainbow Dragon, though I haven't seen it bloom yet, but it looks like it canoes some, if that's the right word. Don't care for that particularly. And do you suppose that the spiral curling petals that some of the spiders exhibit that remind me of a woman's tresses, is because of the genetic presence of wide ruffling to petal edges? If so, then including some of Bennett's ruffling dips would be a good idea. I already have Sweet Tart which has a nice ruffle, and is a beautiful pale salmon pink which wouldn't interfere with keeping things as white as possible. I'm not sure that "taking over the garden" is exactly how I'd describe it but it certainly can be a pest popping up all over the place......and not all that easy to remove as it has a bit of taproot, similar to dandelions. I also agree that there are so many other, less troublesome, more attractive plants to focus on or include in one's garden :-) And if not specified by species, the hieraciums are listed as Class A (least offensive) noxious weeds, with only a few species listed as Class B or C, requiring more stringent control measures.
They don't call them hawkweeds for nothing!! LOL!
