New Texas Flowering Quince is taking the dive
Comments (6)Here are a couple images. They came in a pot and we used the slow release fertilizer packet provided by the nursery. Came from a nursery where stock is grown in Wisconsin. We added new topsoil to the area when we were planting. Its a bit of a low spot so tends to retain a bit of water after big rains. That's about it. Comments (3)I picked some from the ornamental/flowering quince in my neighborhood. I plan to try slicing them and cooking in sugar. I'll let you know how it turns out. I've made jelly from them. They have a unique flavor. The jar of quince jelly I bought at the grocery store in france just tasted like apple jelly to me, not at all like my homemade jelly. Of course, they used pectin and I didn't so their flavor would have been more dilute....See MoreFlowering Quince
Comments (7)You might also try some Turkish or Russian quinces. About 3 weeks ago I received a 5-foot tall bare root Aromatnaya quince by mail from Raintree Nursery outside of Seattle. I planted it in a part sun area and it is already leafing out. Raintree says Aromatnaya has a "pineapple like flavor and is sweet enough to eat fresh". Raintree says it is hardy to Zones 5 thru 9. If you are interested in how it is progressing later this year, drop me an email. I also received from Raintree, Schizandra chinensis (Magnolia vine). Here in Louisiana, we have baystar vine (S. glabra) found in Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area. Planted the S. chinensis also 3 weeks ago in a dense shade area under an overstory live oak and water oak next to a chainlength fence. So far it has been rapidly growing and has produced a few flowers. Hopefully it can take the extreme south Louisiana humidity as I can use a vigerous fruit producing vine in the shaded portions of my yard. The species will apparently thrive in either full sun or dense shade. Here is a link that might be useful: Raintree Nursery...See MoreDouble Take Quince - growth rate and opinions
Comments (5)Double Take is supposedly thornless. I have never been able to make a Chaenomeles behave itself so I have one left, which is 'Kuokoji' and is a deep, rich red. It still makes me nuts with its suckering (I commend those that can keep up) but the flowers are such a beautiful color that I relent each time I plan to take it out. If Double Take is well-behaved it would be worth investigating....See Morekyme
