Might be Canterbury Bell seedlings(Campanula medium). I would transplant them into a corner of the garden out of the way and see what they grow into. If it is a weed, pull it out before it goes to seed. If it is a canterberry bell, let it re-seed itself, since they are biennals and takes a second season to flower.

The ones on the left almost look like rudbeckia volunteers with their fuzzy edges and they'll reseed anywhere. The ones on the right are too hard to tell. I have weeds that look like that - but it also resembles my lobelias and some of my bachelor's buttons, although they look too light a green. Good advice to move them and see what you get. Look at what you've got planted nearby. Chances are whatever reseeded isn't that far away. Let us know what happens.

My garden is brand new, so nothing has bloomed yet. Whatever this is, it's a "stowaway" from the nursery!

i agree about the rudbeckia--they look like goldstrum. pot them up and wait and see. the ones on the right could be a number of things. it is hard to tell what the texture/weight of the leaf is. it even looks a bit like melampodium, which also seeds around. my grandma always said there was a weed twin for every plant. i have pampered a few weeds in my garden until i realised what they were :) but i would get them out of the dianthus.

Hmmm... Looks like red Valerian (Centranthus ruber) to me. They're notorious for self-seeding, and the dandelion-like "parachute" seeds will go everywhere if the nursery fails to dead-head even one flower...

Sorry... the "weeds" on the right look like Centranthus. The ones on the left look like Gaillardia -- also seeds easily, with parachute-like seeds that tend to fly away.

And I think you might have another Centranthus starting up just below the "Gaillardia" there.

Anyway, wait and see if you like... there's no better way to learn how to identify small "weeds" than to let a few grow on a bit!

My original plan was to just let them grow awhile, but they (whatever THEY are) were growing much faster than my Dianthus, and I was afraid they were going to choke it to death. I pulled out anything I was pretty sure wasn't a Dianthus and stuck all the liitle sprouts in a pot for now. I'll have to wait until they are big enough to get a positive ID before I can decide if, and where, to plant them. So far the mystery plants from the right are doing fine, but the ones on the left were pretty small and didin't appreciate being moved : (
