Suggestions for improving soil?

I know the perennials forum isn't the best place to post this topic, but I don't know what forum it would really belong in (plus, this forum gets the steadiest flow of traffic). I have a new perennial garden (just planted it this summer) and I also have terrible soil. My soil can best be described as clay, but it is like a sculpting clay you would buy at an art store (like you could leave your thumb print in it, it's gross!). It is thick, and smelly, and probably not rich in nutrients. As I want to give my plants the best, what can I do to amend this soil without disturbing my already planted and established perennials (digging would only disturb the roots)?
