Hi Robert,

Have you thought about creating your own web page? It's very easy to do now days and there are many free sites that would host your pages.

I only ask because you seem to be quite knowledgeable about your subjects and you like to share information (copious amounts).

It seems to me that if you had a web page outlining your areas of expertise, you could link it at the bottom of your posts where people could bookmark it and read at leisure.

Another advantage I see in your own web page would be that you would only have to type things once (frankly I'm worried about you getting carpal tunnel). (Insert BIG smiley face here)

I'm not saying you shouldn't post here, your info is greatly appreciated, I just think a web page would be beneficial for you and you would target a bigger audience.

Just a thought.

Val that is a great suggestion. Robert if you had a web page you could also post pics (sometimes a pic is worth 1000 words) when describing a process of finished project. I'd sure bookmark your page!

Or if you don't want the expense and don't have the computer savviness (is that a word?), just set up a free flickr account. You can post pictures, put in comments etc. Not familiar with fotobucket but I would guess they have something similar.

Some discussion on recent posts regarding pile moisture control has occured, so addressing this issue with regard to the techniques I use, to try and avoid confusion between my methods and advice, and somebody else's. At this time, not going to discuss pile insulation properties, drainage, or forces that move internal-to-external gas (vapor). Serious composters agree that moisture retention in compost pile material is critical. To the degree that composting material is not sufficiently moist (to promote high microbial activity), decomposition is restricted. After watering a pile, most composters think of pile moisture retention as mostly relative to external air flow (that airflow is needed)...And that well-aerated pile material can get 'too wet'. I disagree, and those two distictions separate my methodology from the 'accepted' perception. The proof I offer to validate my distinctions, is the high quality of my harvested product, and the high speed by which the decomposition process is completed. Air flow is relative to moisture loss only to the degree that drier air can penetrate into the pile from the outside, and studies have shown that such air flow pressure is minimal - to only a few inches, even with coarse pile material and strong winds. My piles suffer external drying effects from wind only 1/4" to 1/2". An exposed pile (no support structure) or 'open' structure (such as wire-sided cage) are subject to much greater moisture loss, depending on the coarseness and natural compaction of materials used, and also relative to square footage of non-insulated ground contact. A pile built on sand will lose moisture more rapidly than one built on clay, and very little loss if on a solid surface. Similarly, covering a pile with a non-permeable membrane (such as a tarp or plastic sheeting) is only effective to the degree that it reduces flow from the inside of the pile, exhausting TO the perimeter. Would have to be very tight, to hold moisture in. An enclosed pile (hat/straw bales, wood, cinderblock, etc.) is more protected from external air flow, but perimeter drying of material against the enclosure structure still occurs, causing an ever-widening gap that will permit even greater moisture loss. Since there's very little airflow in a 4-sided enclosure - how do you account for that phenomenon? Think about it. It's not caused by external air flow, but rather shrinkage from decomposition. All that being said, I think that composters have been thinking "backward" about this issue for centuries. Yeah, I know - but hear me out. I have found that external air flow (into a pile by wind force, i.e., pressure), is the smaller part (osmosis or the 'wicking effect) related to the total effect of internal pile moisture loss. I take a 'deeper' view, based on my extensive moisture testing, to demonstrate that the technique of 'tamping' pile edges significantly reduces moisture loss - by creating a "barrier" as PART of the pile. My piles do not need additional watering between turns, even in drought (arid) conditions (which my location has suffered for more than 6 months to date). You can see in my photo on this thread, how the vertical-sided piles stand without any support - because of this same compaction technique. The benefit of internal pile moisture control is actually a by-product of the 'layer-tamping' technique, as is heat 'insulation'. I consider the major issue of moisture loss to be caused by movement of gasses FROM inside the pile TO the outside external edges, mostly by internally-produced (pressure) heat by produced microbe population expansion. Not by wind or osmosis from wind effect. Heat causes gas to expand and rise. Insulation of the pile to attain higher heat for a longer period is another benefit of 'tamping'. The management technique I employ to restrict moisture loss is nature's way. As a pile material decomposes, it 'settles'. Natural compaction due to gravity and reduction of matter by decomposition, is already a part of the composting process. I simply take it a step farther (than other researchers before me - that I know of) by ignoring the generally-accepted admonition not to compact ANY compost material. However, I do take steps to ensure that previously compacted (edge) material is sufficiently aerated and moved to pile bottom center on the next turn, identified in my earlier discussion about 'scalping' a pile. Moisture loss in my piles is minimal, due mostly (in my opinion) by 'snugly' compacting the outer 3" perimeter of a pile - to restrict moisture from moving from the inside to the outside of a pile. I NEVER compact internal material. Only perimeter. Also experimenting with placing a layer of 'tight' material (such as aged manure or pre-soaked grass clippings) on the TOP of a flat pile called 'capping'. Compacting external sides, develops a more highly-controlled internal composting environment to effectively retain moisture and air in pile materials, and produces high-quality (higher humus percentage) product, faster than anybody else I know of. Am gathering evidence and working with a couple of measuring device manufacturers to utilize current gas measurement/movement technology, and develop a scientific method for using it, to prove my hypothesis. The Frame Technique of 'tamping' sides works very well in wire and solid-side bins, too. Consider experimenting with it. Fact is, sides of a bin don't support the sides of pile material after just a few days of 'settling' anyway. But I'll tell you up front - if a pile is not LAYERED when built/rebuilt - compacting pile sides will NOT work as effectively as it could. As soon as the composting section of my website is built, then all the details of the Frame Technique will be available in one place, with photos, which will be much easier to understand. Robert

(1) How possible is it that a plant from two hundred years ago could have been perpetuated in its original state and retain the same characteristics as the original? of course, that is how species exist in nature. (2) If it's possible, what would be the mechanism of perpetuation? Quarantine from other hoyas maybe, to prevent cross-breeding? Kept in a greenhouse by itself, with polliators like moths? Self pollination - with human intervention. Basically a person would have to pollinate it with it's own pollinia. And when the seeds are ready, grow them on. (3) Would "H. brownii" be a correct naming? I'm still confused about how hoyas end up as "-ii", "-ae", "-is", etc. don't know enough latin, but this is easily looked up. search on botanical nomenclature rules. (4) How could the owner prove that it really was the elusive H. brownii? Realistically no one could, since it had never been published. But I guess you could go with various people's journals or letters - things like that. Another idea, might be easier, is to have the actual plant that he discovered, instead of a descendent. I'm with you, Spade. So far only two in the US have died and both had underlying health problems and probably would've died from ANY kind of flu. So let's don't panic yet. This is not to say I don't have respect for the possibility of a pandemic one day. My grandfather was one of the many who died of the Spanish flu in 1918. I just don't think that's what we're seeing right now. On the one hand, the news media needs to make us aware that this is a possibility, so that we aren't blind-sighted. On the other hand, they don't need to scare us half to death, either. There must be a happy medium there somewhere. They need to quit crying "wolf" before everyone stops paying attention. One news report yesterday mentioned a "pandemic" in 1966 and 1978, and I'm going, "WHA....?" I was just out of high school in 66 and in 78 I was a young mother. Had there been a pandemic I think I would've remembered. I do remember in 78 they made available swine flu vaccine, which I elected not to have my family participate in because I felt it had been thrown together with not enough time for testing. I was really glad that I made that decision. But no one I knew got sick. In 1918, anyone who didn't die of the Spanish flu knew someone that did. Now THAT'S a pandemic. According to the news media, there are quite a few things that will kill us pretty quickly and we ought to be on the lookout for them and see a doctor right away. There's that flesh-eating bacteria and MRSA's. There's some kind of virus that'll drop you on the second day and all you think you have is a cold. Here's my take on the thing. The minute we're born, our days are numbered. Certainly it's good to be prudent, but don't let it get out of hand. It looks to me like the whole thing is fizzling out for the time being. Our chances of stepping out into the street and being hit by a beer truck are probably better than getting the H1 whatever, at least for now.

Val, I really do appreciate you mentioning this - I know you are right - and looked at that possibility just last week - but got 'wet feet' 'cause the person I talked to, said I'd have to learn a computer 'language' (html?) or one of the site-building programs to do it (they used Dreamweaver and sounded WAY to complicated for me). Is there possibly an easier way?

You know I'm writing a book, but not to make money from it - just don't want my experience to perish with me.

Since after ol' Hubert (my trainer), haven't found anybody else with long Frame experience (other than some folks in Florida that I trained from years past) and of course there's folks I've recently trained here).

Frame does work very well, and has many advantages that might interest some folks, especially those who fight CC&R's and who want to know what's going on in the pile.

It's really not complicated, when a person can watch, or see photos in sequence, and thinking seriously about having a person video the spring composting workshop I host for several county extension services. I heard that the video can be on a website too, but not all computers can run it.

Was told that a website would mean that publishing expense would be far less, no ordering/distribution issues, and I could change or add to it if needed.

Like the website idea, and don't need convincing, but I'm reading 3 books at a time; doing online research with one eye glued to a microscope - and frankly, don't do all that well with the language I do use (as you know)...Much less learn a new one.
Sounds like I need is help from two people - a website guru and a ghost writer (or co-author) who knows how to put what I just wrote here, into 50 words or less.

Suggestions?

Good point, Lloyd - what kind of expense is involved with making a little website (well - unless I learn to write more concisely, perhaps a medium website)? I don't have a clue...Maybe your DW knows?

Problem with photobucket, I couldn't figure out how to get any text along with the photos - to clarify what folks were looking at. Can you do that with Flickr?

flickr is real easy to add comments and descriptions, I have zero knowledge of photobucket.

On my free flckr account I have 139 fotos and it is not near to being filled. They allow three sub-sets on the free acount and I use these mostly for slide shows. People can watch a slide show, adjust the speed and toggle the comments to be on or off. They can leave questions that you can respond to and I think the owner can delete entries if he/she wishes to.

There is a monthly maximum that can be downloaded to the free account but it is reset every month.

There is an upgrade one can purchase that has more features but I don't need it yet, the free one is just fine for me.

Did I mention it's free?

Man, that slide show thing is an interesting idea - to sequence photos through the process of building and/or turning a pile through a screen, etc.

Is there a way to put a text document on it as a .jpg or .tif scanned page that can be viewed like a photo?

Maybe between you and Val, I can stop boring folks with long dissertations - and put 'em to sleep with pictures instead?

When I needed to post some text, I took my camera, snapped a picture and posted it on flickr.

Sure. Print it out ans scan it. There are probably printer drivers available that would let you do that. I haven't looked for any, but I'd be surprised if there aren't some somewhere.

There is no cost to a "free" web page hosting site. It's the same as the "free" picture hosting sites. Most free sites are designed the same way - with a "For Dummies" attitude. There is no need to learn HTML if you don't want to. It's mostly point and click.

There are some that will want you to write your page on your computer and upload it to their site. There are others that you can just type right on their site and it's done, no uploading. I would say all free hosting sites have help files to talk you through everything. As a matter of fact, you can type out words in almost any text editor such as Note Pad or word processor such as Microsoft's Word....and instead of just saving it the default way, save it with the .htm extension and POOF! you've written your first web page. That's how easy it is.

The advantage to a "page" hosting site is you can type more "stuff". You can have pictures on a "page" hosting site the same as a "picture" hosting site but with the added hoopla of mass words.

.tif and .jpg are just file extensions that describe a picture. It's the same as using .txt for a text document or .htm for a web document. When you save a picture to your computer it saves it with something like mypicture.jpg. This is how a computer knows in what way to interpret that file (by the extension).

Robert, don't get cold feet just because one person told you that you would have to use a special program or learn html. That is simply not the case for a simple "free" site. If however, once you try a free site and find that you want to move beyond their limitations, then yes, you would have to do that.

What's the limitations? I can hear you asking. Well, most free sites are limited on space. That is the main thing. Also, some (notice I say some) have what is called banners that run across the top advertising products (this is why they offer the space for free). But don't be afraid of running out of space, it takes quite a lot before that happens. And if you poke around there a number of free sites that state they have no advertising.

Sorry, I missed this. BP has it right to a certain extent. You could scan it into your computer, save it with the right extension (usually printer drivers have nothing to do with this) and then upload it to the photo site.

There are of course disadvantages to doing this. You cannot edit this type of document, so say you wanted to add to it or change the wording, you would have to do it all over again (change on your computer, re-scan and re-upload). This is where a web page comes in handy. You can change anything from the largest chunk of text to the placement of a period.

Robert - first of all, thanks for the compliment in the other thread. I spend alot of time working on my blog, and it's got alot of my stuff on it.

Older posts are archived into folders, whether they be by category, month, and so on. My blog was free, and I have a site administrator that takes care of the code stuff for me (free also). I'll send you an email, and tell you how to get your own, as well.

Free websites, I did not know that. All the rest of the computer talk, DW knows computer stuff so I don't have to worry my pretty little head about it, ergo, I don't.

I have a few websites with 50megs.com

They are free and user friendly (no html). Also, their customer service has always been helpful when I had a problem or needed to change something, which is rare in small .com companies.

Hmmm...50megs.com....I didn't know they were still around. That's a good sign that they are doing something right. They've been around at least 10 or 12 years then. That's quite awhile.

I believe they either run a banner or have pop up's on your site but in this day and age pop up's are not really a bother any more. I think for a small monthly fee they will also release you from the banner obligation.

This is where I should blush and say I'm not a guru, but the fact is that I used to be. Computers were my career, making and maintaining web sites was my hobby. My company laid off a lot of people a few years ago and I was one of them. Since we had started raising a grandchild, my husband and I decided I would be a "stay-at-home-(grand)mom.

Thus, the computer field has moved on without me and I'd have to go back to school now in order to catch up but I still remember a few things :-)

Need some help here, to design a website.
Well, not ready for design quite yet -

What I need is information from y'all to find out what kind of a website I should design.
Have a family relative gonna help me get the site up & running.

So - the question is:
What kind of things would you folks like to see on the new site?
soilguy.com is already taken - what do you think about:
soilguy.net - or soilguy.org?
Or what other site name would be better?

I don't even know what colors to use. Suggestions?
What about a logo - y'know an artsy thing - a symbol.
My neice is a commercial artist, and will make it, but needs ideas...

Since you're so helpful and willing to help with people's questions it may be neat if you did a blog where you took people's questions on soil-- kind of like Dear Abby for your garden/lawn/farm.

You would have to include some sort of tutorial on your method of composting, as well, but flickr may work for that.

Thanks, greenwood85 - a blog, OK - would you separate that into different categories?
What about one category for soil (and what it is), and another on soil amendments (in the ground) and mulches (on top of the ground) - and should I include all the types of composting that are done? Or just focus on the several ways that I compost?
Should I have a separate category for soil microbes, or is that 'taking it too far'?
And gardening - maybe leave that major category for other folks more versed in actually growing veggie plants than I am?
What about including lots of references to other sites and authors who specialize in certain areas - would you find that helpful?

Hmmm...I'm having a difficult time visualizing what you have in mind for the site.

References to other sites and authors is always a good thing. You could have a section for 'Links' or you could post them throughout the site or both.

I would try to focus the information on the site to your methods. In other words, if it can be found somewhere else on the web, just link it, don't rewrite it unless you think you can do it better.

Separate sections for compost, soil amendments, and mulch sounds like a good idea.

These are just my opinions of course, but I do have some experience in web design. Once you get going I can give you some advice on getting on google, etc.

What is your definition of "once you get going"?
Please realize, I "don't have a clue" about site design.

Haven't registered a domain name or selected a hosting site yet, but GoDaddy.com has been mentioned - still trying to decide what I should call the site - and what the .com/.net/.org extension should be.
Does it matter?
And what does google have to do with it?

Google has a ton do with who will see your site. If you start getting your site on their searches, you will start getting a LOT more hits.

Getting a good domain name is important, not only for google searches but for your site. You want something memorable, easy to remember, which hopefully will contain something someone would type into a search engine and isn't already taken. GoDaddy is a good site to register a domain name. Think of some possible names. I don't know if soilguy is already taken but godaddy will allow you to type a name in to see if it's taken or not.

The extension will likely be .com or .net

.org is for non-profit organizations.

To get on google you need to load your homepage with phrases that people will type into google. Don't just make a list of searchable phrases though, that angers the google people and they'll blacklist you. I'm sure you will have some viewers without google through this and other forums and that is definitely a good thing. Pick a good site name, too. Sometimes it's better to have a boring name with a searchable word or two into that's easy to remember than a witty, interesting name. Most people recommend that your site name simply be a short description of what your site is.

While reviewing the "Carbon Cycle" on Wikipedia.com, came across this information, which I thought some might find interesting:

Carbon is the fourth most abundant chemical element in the universe by mass after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen.

The physical properties of carbon vary widely with the allotropic form.
For example, diamond is highly transparent, while graphite is opaque and black.
Diamond is among the hardest materials known, while graphite is soft enough to form a streak on paper.
Diamond has a very low electrical conductivity, while graphite is a very good conductor.
Under normal conditions, diamond has the highest thermal conductivity of all known materials.
All the allotropic forms are solids under normal conditions but graphite is the most thermodynamically stable.

Contrary to the popular belief that "diamonds are forever", they are in fact thermodynamically unstable under normal conditions and transform into graphite.
But due to a high activation energy barrier, the transition into graphite is so extremely slow at room temperature as to be unnoticeable.

If you start a blog (you can get one free at www.blogpsot.com or www.typepad.com) you can easily enter subject headings for each post and then insert categories that will appear on the right and folks can just click on those.

As someone above mentioned, it is a nice way to have a "chatty" way to take questions quickly share info, etc. Pictures are very easy to upload and you can literally start your site and start typing.

I know that you can increase your capabilities for pictures, and other gizmos at typepad by paying a yearly fee. Gives more picture space, etc.

Then, when you enable comments, people can ask questions which might serve as a jumping off point for more pix, a better explanation (not that yours aren't good) or whatever might strike your fancy.

Please note, I'm not a consistent blogger OR consigner of categories so some posts are really not categorized correctly. However, it is VERY easy to remedy. If you go to www.blogspot.com you can pick out a template for a page and just start typing.

Well - it's not much yet, but it's a start...

Still lots of work to be done with page design, so there will be lots of changes coming...
Hopefully after the holidays, will get some 'pro' advice/assistance to get sidebar links "hot" - right now, there's no page connected to them.
The email address does not work yet either - maybe next week?

Did the design in Microsoft Publisher and uploaded to GoDaddy with FileZilla - had my head 'spinning' for a bit...Still a bit 'cross-eyed' - but kept my promise to Val, to get one page online - before 2009.

Got a question for folks following this thread:

Have to make a decision soon - about how to handle links and references to other websites.

1) should there be a separate "references" page, sectioned into categories, with a list of 'everybody' referenced, OR

2) would you rather see references included in each separate (sidebar link), Or:

3) would you rather see references in the text body, identified by a number (linked to the reference), with a list of references in a separate section with numbers that relate to each reference?

This is a matter of personal preference, so please vote for #1, #2, or #3.

Hi All - quick note to let you know my email address:
robert@thesoilguy.com is now active, and posted in my profile.

Making some progress with the site - going to switch from using MS Publisher - to learning how to use Dreamweaver - so expect changes.
This means an increased 'learning curve', but will be easier to keep up with site growth in the long run.
