Drainage nightmare in pots

susan4952

After a beautiful spring flush, my roses declined rapidly. Yellow leaves, signs of iron defficiency, mildew, BS. The drainage holes were totally clogged with the turface I added to facilitate drainage. After opening them I had a gush of orange tinged water. My question is, what can I do , short of repot or thread a wick thru the inorganic muck, to keep the holes open? I have manually removed as much as I could thru the drainage holes and tried to make tunnels from the top of these big pots. I even tried a jet of water thru the bottom to flush the stuff out. Kind of a rose enema. Help!
