This rose does not make hips! there for it does not make seeds.! It is propagated by root cuttings. It is also difficult to grow from cuttings. I have many of this rose and the only way I have propagated more is to dig up the suckers and replant them where I want a new bush. Hope this clears things up for you.

Maybe it isn't a Harison? It looks quite like it, but not all are exactly the same in photos.

I swear I picked off little round hiplike things from it. What else could they be? I wish I'd taken a photo before I picked them all off, my plant is going into its 4th year and I got about 25. They had to be something.

I happened to have these on my site. Everybody on the OGR forum assured me it was Harison but when I saw those photos of hips on HMF, I knew something was up.

At the useful link are some photos of seeds or hips. Granted some people who upload photos have the plant misnamed, and I could be one of them, but there are at least 3 photos of seeds or hips. You have to click on older photos to see more. One of my photos from where I got it is there, but some of the others look very close to mine; others are quite different.

Curiouser and curiouser. I didn't think it set hips either or produced seeds. Mine has produced only 3 suckers so far, two shot up so fast and arch. The other may not be a happy camper, but I could be getting some more.

And here is a card I made for Sue on the OGR forum, it was past its prime, looks scraggly, I think I like my finch feeder above it. The canes are long and very bristly, awful at the bottoms. And I did save some instructions for rooting cuttings; these are stubborn. Haven't tried yet as don't want to clip anything off it until it does more.

One trait the Harrison has is its bloom time, They bloom in late May and all at once. They smell wonderful as well. Mine have NEVER made hips or seeds. They have been confirmed as Harrison Hedge Roses. Your pics do not look like mine! Mine bloom in large clusters all along the arching stems, and they sucker freely! You plants look like young plants, still the flowers look different. Larger and more spread out along the stem. Hummmmm let me do some looking and see what I can find?

Harison's Yellow, also known as the Oregon Trail Rose and the Yellow Rose of Texas, is a "hybrid" rose cultivar which originated as a chance hybrid seedling of Rosa foetida. The cultivar first bloomed at the suburban villa of George F. Harison, attorney, between 8th and 9th Avenues on 32nd Street, north of New York City. The site of Harison's villa is now just south of the present General Post Office. The nurseryman William Prince of Long Island took cuttings and marketed the rose in 1830. Harison's Yellow is naturalized at abandoned house sites through the west and is found as a feral rose along the Oregon Trail. The Yellow Rose is the official flower of both Delta Xi Phi Sorority, Inc. and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

I'd appreciate any light you can shed on it. I've no idea what I planted out there in that container yesterday then lol. I just am positive I got whatever they are off the rose and not something nearby, no other roses near it.

I knew that about George Harison, very interesting. What I've always wondered is how those pioneer women preserved the cuttings, guess they kept them moist and stuck them into potatoes; but I'm guessing many had them already rooted or a sucker potted up. But that doesn't explain how they rooted them if they did. Or why they dotted the trail with them.

Obviously it started from some hip or seed because it was a chance seedling. But I know some roses definitely do not produce hips.

So anything you can find out would be appreciated, and if I never know for sure, I guess it doesn't matter. Mine might have taken off better if I hadn't crowded it in there with other plants so close. I saw one more shorter sucker when I was out this am cleaning up a bit. At my friend's place, the suckers come up all over and are even a nuisance. But hers are very well established and were there when she bought the property.

Since I was a child and after, all I'd ever seen around town was what I think was Father Hugo's rose and enchanted by it. You can imagine my delight one late May day, think it was the 25th back in 2003 to see that show of yellow blooms at her house. She and I agree that they aren't useful for boquets because there's no stem to speak of.

I'll bet hers was the only one in town, unless other giveaways have been successful, grew up here and always noticed flowers and roamed a lot, just not so much on the west side. I would have noticed that rose if I'd caught it at bloom time.

FYI, I'm making this longer than I like, but here's what I saved in case I ever do try to root cuttings from my friend's or mine. I don't know whom to credit for this:

"On propagating Harison's Yellow - I actually find it very easy to propagate HY from softwood cuttings during the summer (new growth). Get about 6-8" new growth, strip off all but the top couple of leaf nodes, dip cutting in rooting hormone, place cuttings en masse in a LARGE pot of 1/2 and 1/2 seedstarting mix/perlite.

"Place pot outside in a spot that is always shaded (under a tree, north side of house, etc), and water at least daily. Do NOT cover the pot with plastic or anything - just keep it watered.
"I usually have 12-18 cuttings of one variety in each large pot. As soon as good topgrowth starts (6-8 weeks or so), carefully remove individual rooted cuttings and place them in their own 1 gal pot.
"Starting roses from softwood cuttings outside in a big pot guarantees almost 100% success for me - trying to root them the "proper" way in a plastic bag absolutely does not work for me - I end up with mushy brown cuttings that died."

PS. I guess there's a couple plants there now counting the suckers, some low to the ground behind it that got lopped off along the way, I didn't do it. I was extremely fortunate it even survived and think the reason was twofold. I planted it myself and chance had me put it in dappled shade. My helper planted the rest in slimy gook in almost full sun. I now know better, but my friend's face south and get almost total full sun.

Do you have any photos of yours you can post? How were you able to identify what you have as a hedge or can these possibly be trained as hedges? I have seen Fr. Hugo (or variant) grown as a hedge years ago, asked the lady if I could pick some seeds off it (had something), yes, I did but didn't know what to do with them. That was a single bloom form, paler yellow, very similar to the one on an arbor across the street as a child.

Send some pics to The American Rose Society along with a good discription of the growth habit, bloom time, Flower size and any other detail you feel is relavent to your rose. This will help them Id it for you. I have 2 Old Damask roses here that I am going to send cuttings from to them so they can be ID'd as they are 100 years old. I have seeds to one of them but it may not grow true as I have other roses here as well. I will keep looking and I will take some pics when mine bloom around the end of May. I think as the settlers fell on hard time along there trek they planted there plants rather than just leave them to die.

I will do that, good idea, think it best to take notes and wait until fall and see if it sets anything, don't remember any from previous years. If more of those form, I can try to photograph them close. It's hard to imagine what else they could be but seeds even if they aren't viable. Most rose seedling buffs start them earlier and don't collect in late winter. I was too busy by fall to pay much attention, let those roses fend for themselves, am going to cut the canes on the pink one that hang over the sidewalk back after they bloom. Even if I'd planted that thing further back, it would still sucker towards the morning sun and gets sufficient of that. That one started suckering right away but slowed down this past season.

I'll go out tomorrow and see if I missed any; it's cleared out there now, looked a little but wanted to finish up and didn't confuse them with a poppy pod I saw growing under mine.

Originally I got back into gardening via the heritage roses. I scouted around town and rooted the ones at the following link. Only one that I've noticed sets large hips, and seems it took a couple years, the pink one with the iron patio set (light pink, not the rose colored one).

That's sad about the pioneers, that's probably exactly what they did or even just dumped them. Those roses are tough. Until you want them very badly and try to grow them yourself.

Nobody seems to get too excited about the roses I rooted and are now growing, but I love them. They are hardier in my zone and don't require the fussing my Austins and others do. I'm getting rid of most of those but a few, not going to spray and fuss the rest of my life over roses.

If I had to do it all over again, I think I think I'd do it all again, just know a little more now but no guarantees. Just wish I had a place where I could site them better. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to their blooming this spring. Hope I didn't lose the white one over the winter. I will have to fight aphids on the tips though, will try soapy water in my pump sprayer for that or hose and pick them off. Ladybugs appear later but I'm starting to see more so that is a good sign, but the aphids are one jump ahead of them, but the later aphids seem to be attracting the ladybugs.

Yes, seeds don't necessarily come true. I'd get more excited about them if I had more room to experiment.

WOW! the first pics in you link I will bet are old Damask roses quite a bit like mine. How do they smell? Wonderful? The others Look like a flurabunda type rose. the single white ??? I would love a start off of both white ones you show.

Scent of the pink especially is heavenly, think the rose one is, too, think the pink behind the garage is nice, too. Didn't notice much with the white but I had so few blooms. If I can get it established, it suckers readily and could get more from the lady where I got them but she lost most of hers last winter and won't let me unless this past winter has been kinder to them.

I tried to start two cuttings from my whites just after they bloomed last spring, but failed plus they should be larger diameter canes. If both come back ok, I don't really need cuttings for myself this spring. Those were tough to root, hope it was just me and my method, almost made it but everything started to rot; they had rooted but not put out new leaves, so I gambled and lost by potting them up and covering with a 2-liter under my lights.

You are first in line (and I kinda hope the only one for now), and can have a cutting(s), sucker or both, especially if that lady's did better this winter, she might let me take more. I have snitched but hate to do it with people who have given generously. They need to know they can trust me.

It's very similar to Mme. Plantier if you want to look that up on HMF. But Mme. had pinkish buds that open to white whereas mine don't. Some have the green button, and some it isn't visible at least. Mme. although found in Cuba, survived Katrina and is hardy to possibly z3. HMF will say.

So please be patient and I'll do the best I can for you. I'll keep you posted when I see if they have come back.

It has to be hardy to have lasted that long for that lady. She took no notice of them until I showed an interest. I pointed out to her that even though she'd lost the back half of that row, there were still plenty of suckers in that rubble wall, pretty messy back there, steep alley with goldenrod and those daisies growing every which way.

I'm kind of afraid to look at the canes to see signs of green, at least near the bottom, but maybe I'll brave it, the watched pot syndrome.

Neat your home is 122 years old, must have a large lot to go with it. Maintenance on any age of a house is always a problem for me. Thought about moving to MN several years ago, glad I didn't, couldn't take the winter struggling and driving with no DH. I could have survived if I'd had to. My sister lives in Buffalo, about 50 mi NW of the cities. How far are you from there?

I am a rose rustler so when I find an old rose I get a start.

The kid in me is, too. It depends on where they are whether I'll rustle or not. In town here I usually ask, the pink one I took cuttings and lots of photos because people were helping me. The prop owner who lived about 2 blocks away, got wind of it because somebody saw me. Felt guilty but knew if I'd asked he would have said no. Earlier I had asked for 2 kinds of lilies, he said yes, but his wife was suspicious of me. I said I only wanted 6 or so and preferred to wait until fall, hard to dig there, tried to be polite.

Next time I went by, looked like he had taken Roundup to the whole mess. I don't know what became of the mother plant; it's gone, and there were suckers. I would have been happy to give them as many starts as they wanted, like I mean root them myself but my track record is not 100%. So it goes.

Today I went out to take some pepsi bottles off my delphs. I checked that "Harison" and see I missed some. Tried to get a photo, no patience for good photography today, so didn't get a very good shot but will post what I did get. I could pick the rest of those off.

Then I went around to the back to check on the white one. Looks better than last year, lots of green on some canes but may have suffered dieback on some, still pretty young to put out tougher canes. So I won't know for awhile. Apologize for the mess, cleaned up some last fall, got the front bed tidied up yesterday but need to clear a lot out along where these roses are and more in front.

So it looks hopeful at least. I will wait to see how much leafs out, then I'll know more, and we can go from there. The yellow one didn't put out any suckers until year 3, don't know what to expect of this one. The pink one threw out suckers within a couple of months from the time I set it out in spring a few years ago. Funny the way they are.

That's OK! I just thought I would offer you some of these old roses. The litter is good for the roses keeps the ground warmer and feeds the roots. Hope they all grow good for you this year.

I sincerely appreciate the offer; if I had more room, I'd jump on it for sure. I leave the mess for the winter because I figured it would help some, did not attempt to winter protect any, could have done that of course; mine have to sink or swim on their own.

All these dead leaves, don't remember that and wonder if or when they will drop off. Won't worry about it now. Most of the others are like that now, too.

I wanted to see if I would be able to contact you later, could send a whole cane or two for starts, but it's harder to root them this small in diameter, recommend pencil thickness. I take what I can get how I can; few green shoots just after blooming are very thick. I have noticed the few where the cuttings were thicker, they do tend to root more easily. This is the white one now, it has shot up a lot basal growth, all this from nothing above ground at this time last spring, which is a good sign. Canes looked a little better eyeballing them than the photo (and it's both plants there), but it appears some winterkill for sure.

I figured it was to do with mac's, so I clicked on it. Told me to update my bookmarks and then it redirected me to me.com. When I got there, there's a colorful page to login like FB. So I switched to IE8 and pasted in your url from your GW page gayxxxxxx@mac.com, get a different message, "Windows cannot find (url, and I'm just copying and pasting it from your profile). Check the spelling and try again." I don't know what is going on, has to be something with that domain. Even booted up my imac and tried it w/Safari, same thing, wants a user name & password, register, etc. Have you checked your site lately to see if you can get in? It's not the end of the world, just thought you might want to know.
