Philodendron flower buds?
'Black Cardinal.' Bought last year about this time. The other 2 pots had blooms on the plants, but I chose one with 4 individuals instead. I can see for sure that #1 is the new leaf forming. I think #2 & the little nubbin the arrow is pointing to are both buds. Yea or nay? Is it possible for one stem to make 2 flowers? TIA for your thoughts!

9 years agoCloser shot. The larger bud is the "main" thing going from NW to SE, with the little nubbin in bottom right corner.

Comments (36)I think this may explain the red "dye." I was checking to see if this leaf would come free of its' sheath yet, which it did. Then I started tearing away the sheath and it made my fingers red. The tip was full of red juice but lower, it was white and more dry inside. Holding the removed sheath: Excavating further: New leaf is so pretty! It should finish unrolling soon. My prior experience with Philos has been limited to heart-leaf so I've never watched the formation of a leaf this big until this plant, but it did have the same shape as your "pod" and that's definitely what it is, a beautiful new leaf. Comments (6)Like you, I recently bought a potted,grafted Shenandoah 'tiny' plant and transpotted it into a bigger pot, where it has grown OK with 2 small branches developing full-sized healthy leaves. An identicle-looking tiny grafted KSU Atwood from the same seller that was packaged the same, growing in the same kind of nursery pot, repotted by me the same into the same kind of tall pot on the same day in the same soil mix with the same fertilizing and the same watering and the same Sunlight....never had one bud on the tiny scion grow out. It's rootstock sent out a couple shoots, but even these declined and died. I have used Miracle Grow, Super Thrive, and some granular fertilizer to nourish both. My conclusion is that the tiny root system is not reliable to support the tiny grafted scion. I have more confidence in clipping off the scion and regrafting it to a mature paw paw with a developed root system. I do not know what the patent restrictions dictate, but if I am going to invest $$ on a valued scion that is only being kept alive by an immature, very vulnerable rootstock, that is not a safe bet to make again. It would be a whole lot better taken care of if it was grafted onto a "Mango paw paw that has been in the ground for several years and is 8 or 9 feet tall". I wish that paw paw roots on tiny plants were as eager to grow and hardy as,.. say,...mulberries. Maybe that would be the best focus of additional paw paw research. Comments (2)I wouldn't use the term "leaf bud." Growth buds break from the cane to make a stem with multiple leaves. In late spring, most of the growing stems will terminate in a flower bud or cluster of buds. These are unmistakable, shaped something like Hershey's Kisses of various sizes. It a stem doesn't have enough oomph to produce a flower, it "goes blind" and terminates in a final leaf. If the top leaf is fully expanded and dark green, then the shoot has gone blind. The clematis that had a couple of buds at the beginning of August now, almost two months later, has a ton of flowers with no sign of letting up anytime soon. I'm still seeing new buds coming out. 9 years agoYes, sorry if I'm not capturing it in pics. There's a leaf unrolling, then these 2 protuberances are coming from the petioles of the 2 previous leaves. I cut away the new leaf's petiole since it started to break out today.

9 years agoBending the leaf to the left a bit, there's the tiny sliver of the next new leaf in there, with the fatter, shorter protuberance behind and to the right. The other protuberance is to the right of those. Are these pics better?

9 years agoI think I said above, the pot has 4 individual plants in it. The 3 biggest ones just unrolled a new leaf per plant, very colorful, but the big bud doesn't look different yet. I went to Dollar General yesterday for rubbing alcohol to clean this plant (it's got sooty mold on some of the leaves from sitting under trees with it) but they were out. So, sorry the older leaves don't look so great, that's why.

9 years agoNice work Purp! It would be interesting to see if you could get anything out of them.
One of my Philodendron 69686's bloomed a couple of years ago. It is believed to be a sterile wild hybrid so I didn't bother to try anything with it but there were three inflorescence(s) one after the other.

I think that was about as exciting as my flower is going to get. The spadix is turning brown. Hopefully the plant will be happy enough inside to complete the other bloom. It's a few inches above the floor on a cookie tin, in our warmest room.
Here's the whole plant, with the leaves finally cleaned off. Looks like it got a little sunburned getting its' plain water rinse before coming in a few weeks ago. Oops, it was cloudy when I did that, but you can see some sunburn happened. She is much more shiny in person, the camera insists on making her look dull.

9 years agoHere is a leaf from 2011, That is a one gallon bottle to the left for a size reference. You can see an inflorescence growing to the left and under the leaf.
I don't have any pictures of it as it currently is. It is in my studio so next time I go over there I'll try to remember to take one although now it is mostly a bare stem about four or five feet long with a couple feet of stem with leaves on the end. Which I think is a natural growth pattern for wild type philodendrons.
Purp; Just cause you don't know about manual pollination is hardly a reason not to try. It would be interesting to see what you could do with this plant.
