I bought some "Alexandra" and "Pineapple Crush" seeds from thestrawberrystore.com last year and had good results. I put 3 to 4 seeds per cell in one of those 36 cell trays and only had a couple cells without viable transplants. They did take a long time to germinate and get to a point where they were "transplantable" but they did make it, and most have survived the winter just fine (still green). They also came true to seed from what I can tell... the pineapple crush fruits were white and the alexandra fruits were red.

Hello people.........this person planted strawberry roots, not tiny seedlings. They should come ripping up in spring, and they won't look like tiny seedlings. When did you set out the crowns? If you planted them dormant this spring yes, you should have long ago seen signs of life. If planted last fall, your berry season is already over. When foliage comes from the crown of tubers it doesn't get a tiny little leaf. Normal size leaves erupt. Sprinkling strawberry seeds outside on the ground isn't very successfuly either. They're even a little iffy sown in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. Please.......when did you plant them, and how were they purchased and when.

If you are a small family gardener, and like fresh strawberry for a long period (home canners lean towards a couple of big harvests to get all their work overwith) you need to consider buying small groups of different types. So you get early berries early in the season, and later berries late in the season. There are so many different types available by mail order and new ones pop up every year so there is no way to proclaim one breed as superior to others. Different gardens with different gardeners need different plants. Try whatever you can find. Some of my tastiest berries come from plants given to me by friends - no name cultivars. Don't believe the hype.
