Alocasia Yellowing... Can I stop it from going dormant?
Comments (5)i've been reading about it on hardytropicals.co.uk in aroid forum. basically if you put the pot on a heat mat and bag it to incerease humidity - it'll wake up. soil should be at 70F minimum. 70F-90F is fine. i am looking into using regular heating pad for now to wake up the bulbils that i harvested. will be also potting my alocasia polly tubers too soon. but usually people use heating 'propagation' mats....See MoreWhen to remove and pot Alocasia offsets??
Comments (5)Hello Brendon, i see this discussion was quite some years ago so I hope this message still reaches you. How did you get on with the separation of clypeolata, because I am in the same position you were back then. I have 7 or 8 bulbous offsets sitting around the parent plant and am undecided as to when to attempt the task. Regards, Bruce...See MoreDormant Alocasia Poly ... how to wake the dumb thing up?
Comments (10)I'm not a big fan of petruska's method, it seems extreme and risky, cooking bulbs in a bag... There's no argument from me that it worked tho! I prefer gentler methods myself...if I was asleep, and someone poured blazing hot water on me...I'd wake up, but I'd throw a fit once I woke up! These alocasia don't seem to mind tho! Atleast not from what I've seen' They are very slow to wake up once dormant! No doubt about that! I too would caution you not to wake it up yet, unless you can artificially provide ample heat and LIGHT then you will only be stressing the plant worse, and likely sealing its fate... I'd wait until march or April and start uping the heat and moisture, if all goes well the plant might reappear in may or June lol... As to tropics reference of the name amozonica...there's apparently no correct name for this plant, poly is wrong, it's not a polyploid, amazonicas wrong, it comes from Asia, Alocasia mortefontanensis is name given to it when the original cross was made, over 100 years ago! For those who haven't read it, this link I added maybe helpful! It's an interesting read either way! I try my best to not get hung up on names of plants, I like the plant, ill grow it! I might name it Cindy or frank so I know who I'm talking about... Here is a link that might be useful: Exotic rainforest...See MoreAlocasia Frydek and dormancy/dividing
Comments (6)Ok... So... The big tubers, are tubers! They prefer to be mostly buried in rich fast draining soil. You should maybe save the one that popped off already, if it still exists. In you unending season, anytime is fine to repot, best done when the plants semi dormant or dormant! You won't need to cut anything at all, I use the hose to blast the soil free! It's more gentle than ripping them apart... What you will find will mostly be long succulent ropey white roots, with a few fine feeder roots, dark roots can be removed or left intact, dead roots should be removed... You'll also find offset tubers in there too, if you saw my pic of them, you know what to look for, they will look like little nuts in the soil... Split them off, just a touch will snap them, dirt thru the old soil, it may be FULL of them! I'd plant them with the large tubers, it'll fill the pot quicker. DONOT let the small offsets dry out! The bug tubers can take a beating but the pups can't! Easy on the water until the plant starts growin again... Hope you see this, and it helps!...See Moregrabmebymyhandle
