How to rescue a very badly pruned rhododendron

We planted a fairly young rhododendron in our front garden this year. Our toddler got a little too excited when it bloomed and "helped" prune the shrub by ripping off all the flowers where he could reach. This happened before the new stems and leaves could grow in.

So now, it looks like a peacock...3/4 of the front of the shrub never had new growth and the back (where he couldn't reach) sprouted 8"+ new growth.

I feel like just cutting everything back to the same level, but am afraid that I'll end up with no flowers at all next year.
