Pickle Juice for Blueberies?
Comments (4)Ben: The Californian aced this one. The only salt tolerant plant I know of is asparagus. People used to salt their asparagus beds to keep down the weeds without (barely) killing the asparagus. I think it's better to cultivate around the asparagus. A little salt water around your blueberries would ring down the curtain of doom upon them. Few things are as alkaline as salt. Comments (15)I have enough room to have more than one pile. Anything that I want NO WHERE NEAR the garden; i.e. thistle, blackberry, mullein, etc. goes in a large unkempt cold pile that is located NO WHERE NEAR the garden. I turn it a few times a year and just let Mother Nature do her thing. That pile currently houses many a mouse, lizard, and volunteer potato plants. Our regular kitchen scraps along with small, easy browns go in the black plastic bin with screw-top lid that is conveniently located next to the garden gate. Everything else goes in a set of 4X4X4 orchard bins that I alternate when I get around to turning. I call them the Bulk Bins. Surplus coffee grounds, leaves, shredded wood debris, wheelbarrows full of weeds/grass clippings. . .it all goes in. But I understand many people simply don't have the space. In which case I would say bury it in the middle and hope for the best, or burn it (if possible) and use the ash in the compost. I also find that when things do start sprouting up (dredded maple seedlings)a few well timed turns of the pile keep them from getting established. Good luck!...See MoreCan I put mushroom compost on my perennial beds now?
Comments (7)Surprisingly, I am on one of the old 1920s lots that is a half acre!!!!! Long and skinny -- house up front, backyard and garden in middle, and woods at the end. The house has ALL sorts of goofy "old house problems," but we love it. It's a nice, quiet, walkable neighborhood. Unfortunately, the yard is so very hospitable that a whole family of squirrels loves it too. And they eat out at my garden every day like it is a restaurant. Oh well! I take Bells Ferry as a shortcut to Barrett Pkwy all the time. I know Barrett Pkwy is a headache, but so nice for shopping and eating out!!!!!!...See Moreleftover dill pickle juice
Comments (21)I know that followers of homespun folk remedies have strong beliefs. No need to disturb that, There's no magic in pickle juice. Many people have night cramps because they are partly dehydrated; drinking more water during the day often solves the problems. A lack of salts can also play a part, drinking a sports drink supplies several electrolytes and bananas supply potassium. If you want to eat more vinegar, pair it with olive oil and eat more salad....See MoreLloyd
