do you place the rolls into your compost piles as is or should you cut them into pieces

You could just throw them in, they won't last long ;-)

I shred all of mine (cardboard,brown paper bags etc)

You can throw them in without shredding them but the smaller they are the quicker the bacteria that digest the material in your compost will be able to work on them.

I tried it and they alternated between drying out completely and getting mouldy. Also the compost fell out of the bottom and the whole thing was a sorry mess. I'm sure there are advocates of "bog-roll-planting" out there, but for plants with long roots (e.g. sweet peas) I now use 500ml yoghurt pots - they're nice and deep. Yes, the plant has some root disturbance, but it doesn't make a huge difference, in my opinion.

Albert, they don't come apart when they are completely planted next to each other and under soil. You can't use them as self-contained pots! If you look at the last picture on the first post, you can see them in the lasagna pan and kitty litter box. There is no way for them to fall apart.... that is until you take them out to plant. Then they might, but by that time you're done anyway! My husband built me a cold frame out of PVC pipe. Inside the cold frame, I have a couple of skids/pallets to keep the containers up off the ground. (A couple of years ago I had my containers on the patio and some slugs found their way inside! The nerve!!) The total cost for the cold frame was about about $20.00. It comes apart for easy summer/fall storage. Living in a condo, the neighbors wouldn't like to see me set up my old recyclables in full view on my patio. I have to at least try and be descrete... well somewhat anyway! (complain to me, they WILL be rewarded with a w/s plant)

Gladys, I use TP rolls and newspaper pots and have been pleased at the results with both. I put them in another container such as a gallon milk jug or 3# coffee can. To help retain moisture, I stuff them in really tight, even if it squashes a few. If I have any empty spaces left after that, I sprinkle in potting mix and water well. I moisten the mix til almost sloppy before adding it to the rolls or pots and that way the paper soaks up the excess moisture. By doing all this, the mix in mine is still moist at plant-out time. I use them for sweet peas, zinnias, Baptisia, and other things that don't like to be transplanted. I use more each year because they are so easy to transplant -- no messing with separating roots. I don't put bottoms on the paper pots. Just be sure to bury them completely with soil. If you leave any paper above ground, it will wick moisture away from the roots.

I have tried using them for root crops--with Nancy's shaping method, thanks!--but the seedlings languish. I think the cardboard must draw nitrogen from the soil, or that there is some growth retardant in the cardboard. It happened when I made cardboard dividers in a larger pot, too. In both cases, the cardboard was completely surrounded with moist soil, so I don't believe drying out wast he problem. Sweet peas, on the other hand wouldn't necessarily be bothered by the nitrogen problem. I don't know if they are N producers in the seedling stage, though.

Toilet paper rolls, and many other cylindrical containers made of paper products, are constructed in a spiral so you can pull them apart into one twisty piece. For some strange reason this always amuses me so I usually pull them apart. Then I either shred the twisty piece or just wet it and throw it into the compost pail.

In the Spring, when you put your seedling out,cut the rolls into 1/3's.
Use these rings to STOP cut worms from finding your tender, young, helpless plants.
But I would compost the rest.

I throw them into the pile as is, or sometimes give them a quick twist (as I do with office paper) to make it less likely to mat or fly away.

and I also had a nice smile ---- Calire ---I carve my pumpkin in the same fashion as the one in your pile---weird !!!
