oh my, blue birds...I love them, unfortunately they are practically extinct here on the Island due to the DDT spraying years ago. Yes, buy the meal worms...I understand it's easy to start raising meal worms...do a Internet search to get started...this way you can feed them all year long...Do you have nesting boxes for them? Look on youtube as well. We feed our birds black oiled sunflower seeds and thistle for the American goldfinches...and suet for all the birds. It's just a joy to watch them! We had multiple Cardinal babies born in our yard this summer...They were all over the place. I took so many movies of them, I would feed them on our deck and they would be just a few feet away from us. Joann

So glad this subject came up. I have my jugs somewhat north/west, behind a picket fence, some afternoon sun filters thru. Our 2nd story deck blocks the morning sun. I consider it a shaded area in the summer. I'm in Z6 and tempted to move them to the south or east side of the house, they'll get morning sun. I'm so afraid of them getting too much sun and sprouting early, but they seem to be in a frozen wasteland area. Some still have ice in them from rain we had weeks ago even after some 40-50 degree temps last week. I hate this anxious doubting newbie spot. Right now they are under 8" of snow so I'm moving them any time soon. Donna Mae

Makes sense that if grown-up plants won't tolerate the cold, then their little babies won't either. However, my maters have been resistant to about 28 degrees, as long as it's dry (no frost). Unlikely if you have a lot of condensation on your jugs, so if it's not too much trouble, just take those babies to the garage. Why risk it? Does anyone know if tomatillos will WS? They seem a close relative to tomatoes, but they also are native to parts that are much more temperate than where I live. I sowed some with my 'maters this year (okay, first time I've WS'd at all, to be honest!), and will report back; but I was wondering if anyone had some feedback? I have seen mostly flowers WS, but I am hoping to start my entire vegetable & herb garden this way...

christy - if your daffodils have bloomed they will not rebloom until next Spring. If it is just foliage you are seeing they'll be fine and bloom later this spring. At 2 -3 inches they've hardly begun so don't be concerned. It seems to be unusually mild in lots of places. I have daffodils blooming in my garden and there are lots in the local parks. They would not usually start flowering for a couple more weeks.
