What are your temps?

It was 7* here this morning...the temp swings are nuts, from 5* one day
to 55* the next, then back down to 7* ... crazy!

It's unusual for Long Island to get this cold. Our pump is still working
though, even though it's covered over with a veil of ice.

Our temps have been about Minus 18, but now it has warmed up to minus 1!
I just put in a new stocktank heater right before the cold temps arrived. There's too much snow to actually go up to my inground stocktank pond, but it looks like the snow is much lower over that pond.........so hopefully, its doing its thing. I buried some of my water plants in the ground, since my pond is too small to hold all of them in the winter. I sure hope they make it! Sounds like weather is crazy in alot of places. Good luck!

Hi Catherine, Minus 18! oh boy...
I've been making suet for the birds like crazy, and have been enjoying
watching them.

In our homemade suet feeder outside our kitchen window there is a bunch of downy woodpeckers and Carolina wrens
taking turns, along with the Blue Jays...I love the Carolina wrens, as their song is so melodic in Spring and summer.

The back suet feeders have the big flickers, and red headed woodpeckers,
along with all the other birds...it's just a delight watching them.

Thanks for all the consolation. It wouldn't be so aggravating if Mother Nature didn't play tricks. One week, soooo nice and sunny and the birds are singing and twitterpatting and the honey bees are buzzing and you get the glorious feeling of pulling your gardening hat out for the first time, and the spring bulbs are just bobbing in the slight breeze and....and then bam! Freeze Warning! Luckygal, yeah, you're right, I have noticed milder winters than in the past too, although we have still had lots of snow pack. Still...it's too damn cold for May 1st, I say!! (hear me roar!) My plum trees are blooming...I hope they don't get nipped off. Southie, I'm going to order fall bulbs this year and overwinter them until next spring so I can see where to plant them. Have you ever done that?

My mussaenda thus far still looks good and is still blooming a little. It did have Christmas lights in it. Other things that seemed to do well - Out on the open: Jasmine Citrus Mango Crotons Geranium Bush daisy Dusty miller Jatropha interrigima (sp) Hibiscus, though the first couple days after the cold, the blooms only partly opened, they're fine now. Bromeliads Ruellia Scarlet Milkweed Parsley & thyme - actually seem more vigorous than before Coral shrimp - the Golden shrimp took a hit though, right next to each other, odd In pool cage: Red Hot Anthurium Peace lily Christmas cactus Phal. orchid Low was 35 or less here.

I have already hardened of some of my peppers. The next step is potting them up. All of them are going to go in the pots. Now I have to decide what size pot for each, as some require bigger pot than the others. I have pots from 2 gal and up plus some bags (More like 4 gal). I hope they wont fall apart in the middle of season. I might double them up for safety. I know Chilaca, Cubanelle, gypsy , Bishops Crown, Manzano , ... get quite big. I have already mixed a barrelful of 5-1-1, added lime and CRF (moistened it). Weather permitting, tomorrow is the day to get to work on them. I have a lot more inside to be trained . and hardened off after I am done with the first batch. Anybody else is planting out now ?

Hi Ilene, I'm kind of amazed y'all didn't have a frost because it looked pretty cold up there on the weather map. The green tomatoes I left on the vines are just sitting there and sitting there and sitting there. I don't think they are going to change colors and ripen until the sun shines. Supposedly we will have sunshine here on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I'll believe it when I actually see it since that also was our forecast last weekend and we had no sunshine and lots of cold instead. I think in the last two weeks, we've had a couple of times where the sun came out for 3 or 4 minutes, and last Thursday we had a hour or so of sun early in the day. It got our hopes up for a sunny day, but then that tiny bit of sun vanished. I saw an article on the website of either the Fort Worth or Dallas newspaper that said as of yesterday they were on their 11th straight day of clouds/no sunlight, so even that far south they are having about the same weather as most of us. The good news is that most of Texas has had a lot of rain and their drought conditions are receding. When the new Drought Monitor map is released tomorrow, we'll see a lot of changes.....I know that, not because I'm psychic, but because I have already looked at their KBDI map this week on another website and it shows great changes. Don't those Crocs have holes in them? I can't wear anything like that, including any sandals or open-toed or open-heeled shoes, that let the scorpions or fire ants have access to my skin or they'll take advantage of it. I learned that the hard way and have tried pretty hard not to slip up......if there is one fire ant in the yard and I go outside the house in sandals (I do wear them indoors), that one fire ant will find me the instance I step off the porch and onto the ground. We do have fire ant mounds popping up in a few places, and I still have some organic fire ant killer, so if we get a couple of dry days, I'll treat those mounds. Our puddles even have puddles, Ilene. The dog yard is a muddy mess but we've spread a couple of bales of straw there and that is helping. I think we need to get a couple more bales of straw and put out even more. When I walk in the garden, it squishes. I suspect this long, cloudy spell is a taste of the kind of fall/winter weather we're going to have this year. Usually October is one of my favorite months with its bright blue, clear, sunny skies and moderate temperatures. This year is a whole different story though. Dawn

I love the birds too.
But the sight of this in these sub-zero temps is a bit disconcerting! They started over-wintering here a couple years ago, with the mild winters.......but they're probably thinking they might have made a mistake. I'm thinking of buying some of those dried mealworms for them. I've heard they like them....even if they aren't alive.

oh my, blue birds...I love them, unfortunately they are practically
extinct here on the Island due to the DDT spraying years ago.

Yes, buy the meal worms...I understand it's easy to start raising meal worms...do a Internet search to get started...this way you can feed them
all year long...Do you have nesting boxes for them? Look on youtube as well.

We feed our birds black oiled sunflower seeds and thistle for the American
goldfinches...and suet for all the birds. It's just a joy to watch them!

We had multiple Cardinal babies born in our yard this summer...They were
all over the place. I took so many movies of them, I would feed them on our
deck and they would be just a few feet away from us.

We've been well below zero for the last five days, with wind chills between -30 and -50. Crazy cold! The pump is still pumping - if we listen carefully we can hear the water flowing over the falls! Can't see it as it's encased in ice and covered by snow - hopefully the snow is providing a good layer of insulation to the pond and the fish aren't feeling any worse for the wear!

I couldn't take the wind chill factor between -30 and -50 ...
I think I would stay in and hybrinate until the spring thaw.
We warmed up to 24* and by the weekend it suppose to
be around the lower 50* range...Crazy swings.

I only remember one very cold winter about ten or twelve years ago --
the pond was frozen over for a couple of months...
we sure worried about the fish, but they survived.

It has been down to 7 at night and below freezing during the day for 3 days. Got up to mid 40's today and back down in the 20's tonight but then starting a warm up, YEAH!!!. It hasn't been this cold in Georgia in 20 years. Lots of busted pipes and dead cars in our area. My bubblers are keeping a hole in the ice on the ponds and I am looking forward to warmer weather. I can see my babies swimming around under the ice.I shopped for some garden art on line today with my Christmas money. Hurry Spring!

Our low was 8.5 with a -2.7 wind chill. I covered my 12X20 3,000 pond with a large tarp because I was afraid the pond falls would freeze and re-direct the water out of the pond. It worked really well. I only do this when it gets bitter cold.

Good luck staying warm in those temps.
