Yoshino cherry and yellow leaves

I live in zone 6 New Jersey. This is a yoshino cherry that I planted 4 years ago. About 15% of its leaves have turned yellow within the past 7 days. Do you think it's a pest, disease, or something else? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Possibly too dry at the root (needing a good soaking) but otherwise cherry trees are prone to viruses etc. Finding out if there is something like a virus at work would probably best be handled by approaching New Jersey Cooperative Extension and seeing what they may be able to do for you.

i am in severe drought.. no rain in 8 to 10 weeks ...

almost all the trees on my 5 acres are showing.. and dropping some amount of yellowed leaves ...

we are 2 weeks from September .. and what.. maybe 6 weeks from leaf fall ....

though i am worried .. there is nothing i can do about it...

and i suspect the trees will be just fine ....

dig a small hole.. find out what the soil is like ... deep in the root zone.. if bone dry ... a long deep trickle watering ... to get some water to the root zone would help ... but it isnt going to save those leaves ... it would just be a matter of having the tree go into winter in the best shape it can

Hi Guys, I really need help. I bought two cherry trees for my yard and they have small pin sized holes in them at the store. I assumed it was bug damage, and one of them after planting got better (Kwanzan) but the Yoshino is just drooping and full of holes. The leaves are turning yellow and most are just full of holes. I read it might be shothole disease, how do I treat this? I bought a tree bug treatment not knowing what it was and it didn't help one bit. Does any fungicide work for this disease? I can post a picture soon but it's basically small holes all over the leaves that are brown around the outside of the hole. I am afraid I am losing my tree and the drought here is not helping. I water it every chance I get but I don't want it to die. The Kwanzan still has holes but it looks much better than the Yoshino. Can the larger trees in my yard catch this fungus? Please help! L

Both trees were planted the end of April. It is a major drought here, I must water the trees almost every other day or every three days. Sometimes daily. I don't water too much. We live in a very hot open field, and it has not rained in 3 months. I could not dig a hole now if I tried. It's hard clay soil. (and yes I read cherry trees can stand droughts and clay soil before I bought them) I don't know what to tell you, that I didn't already say. they are many small holes all over the leaves, new and old , brown around the center of the hole. It doesn't have shock. My other trees (smaller ones) have it too. Both have normal leaf growth, and new shoots and are growing well they just have holes all over the leaves. I didn't want to leave this issue too long and risk the tree dying. The Kwanzan is much better than the Yoshino. I can get a pic tomorrow.

On the flip side... if your ground is just solid hard clay.. and you haven't gotten a lot of summer rain recently.... the planting hole that you dug could become a hard sink that holds any water your put down. This is especially true if you didn't break up the bottom of the hole a bit.. and ruff up the sides. I made the mistake years ago when we first moved in while planting a line of cherry trees alone the street line. One started looking just like yours did after planting. After a while of trying to keep it going and watering it more and more (thinking it didn't have enough water).... it died completely. I pulled it up and the bottom of the planting hole was holding a few inches of standing water. I remedied the sink issue... planted a replacement. Didn't go crazy on water.. and now they are all doing well.

pic would really help .... dry shouldnt be an issue on 7 year in the ground plants ... i would wonder about frost or freeze.. since they leafed out ... where in z6? .. great variances ... how bad was your winter ... i had a z4 in my z5 ... my cherry did not take it well ... but it hasnt leafed out yet ... good.. since frost is possible tonight .. one might think.. it has to be cold event.. if all 3 are showing the problem .. for a disease to attack all 3 ...... in early spring.. seems off to me ken

ITS NORMAL .... in drought...

other than killing the tree from lack of water.... which you can easily fix ....

it will be no worse off next year ...

i am 99% sure it will be fine.. presuming you dont drown it ...

Well, saturating the rootball helped. The yellow leaves have fallen off, but it doesn't look like any more leaves have taken a turn for the worse.
