Hey there, everyone. Littleton/Acton, MA area winter sower (1st year) checking in.

Anybody in my neck of the woods seein' any sprouts yet? The hubbie and I checked this past weekend and no green yet.

But I'm keeping the faith. Its been a crazy winter in my neck of the woods. Weather lady said this morning that we've been under the average temp for the past 15 days straight. Most of the winter has been like that.

Seeing as how I just noticed the first shoots of crocus coming up in the front yard, I'm assuming its still a bit too early to be seein' winter sown sprouts?

Hi Wubba,
I'm on the south shore Norwell - Scituate area . I have exactly 7 little sprouts cosmos and pinks. I was thrilled !! It is awfully cold unless in the sun esp. at night have to watch my pots I'll probably freeze them to death.lol

Hi Wubbal, I live on North Shore eastern MA near coast. I have alyssum sprouts and one little green sprout in a 2 litre bottle that the number faded on. I have a few bottles this happened to so the spout is either alpine aster or dianthus siberian blue.There have been a couple zone 6 people on forum reporting dianthus so it is probably dianthus.I winter sowed different varieties of dianthus. A lesson has been learned by this new first year winter sower about the fading of numbers in the sun. I have a couple crocus in bloom on south side of my house and I have tulips starting to come up. It has been cold with talk of more snow later this week.I have been hoping to get out and expand a couple of beds so I have room for all I have sowed. I am anticipating plenty of sprouts the next few weeks as the weather warms.

I completely agree with Richard about Steven! I would kill to have free reign of his GH!! I've bought several of his offerings in the past and wish that I could have more. Some new bidders over the last year, or so, have had a price is no object attitude and I can't even say how much I hate them! :~( I used to be able to follow their bidding, when you could see names, and they did this with all the great stuff. They may be good for the sellers, but they drove the rest of us out of the bidding. He almost always starts out low and the price is driven up by three or four people. The same bidders drove up prices on many of my favorite sellers. (Have I mentioned how much I hate them, yet?) Before eBay started to hide the bidders ID, you could check out the bidding styles and prices limits of the competition. I'm sure that it's the same group and they seem to have unlimited funds, but do know what to bid on. They have excellent taste, but far deeper pockets that I do. :~( Steven does sell a few known virused orchids, with FULL disclosure!!! Some historic divisions are that way period and there are none known to be virus free. They're always kept isolated and used for their genetics. I'm pretty sure that he checks out all of his plants, as his collection is likely far too valuable not to. To a serious collector or just the obsessed and deranged, like me, an orchid that hasn't been mericloned a bazillion times is is a stronger plant in the long run. My small group of original divisions are my pride and joy. I have clones of most of them, but I get all tingly about the originals! Just my two...er...15 cents! ;~) Scott

There are many variables to be considered in a discussion about soils. I'll tell you a little about 3 different soils & you can decide how different they are and if you think compaction/soil collapse will be a problem for you. Peat based soils, like MG, break down quickly - within a single growing season. When you use them, you have to hope the container size and o/a plant mass is enough to compensate for the collapse toward the end of summer. Hopefully, the roots have colonized the container and the planting has matured to the degree that the plant is able to use the water from compacted soils quickly enough to avoid root rot. We hope that roots are healthy enough that they actually become a part of the structure of the soil and function as aids to the soils ability to hold air. For maximun vitality when using these soils, the plant should be bare-rooted every year. Conifer bark-based soils break down at a rate around 1/4 that of peat soils. They virtually guarantee that the roots will become a part of the soil structure w/o much concern for root rot, as long as your irrigation practices are reasonable. The 5:1:1 mix of pine bark:peat:perlite is a good example of this type of soil, and there are hundreds of GW folks growing in it with very good results. You should expect at least 2 years service from this soil, as opposed to 1 from those based on peat. Your trees should have some attention paid to their roots every two years - 3 years maximum, so this is a good soil to use for your trees. The third type of soil is the gritty mix described way upthread. It consists of equal parts by volume - pine or fir bark:Turface:crushed granite. It is 2/3 inert, so it breaks down very slowly and will still be very serviceable long past the time appropriate for you to do a repot/root-pruning. This soil retains its structure for a very long time, and could easily be pressed into 5 years service if the plant's becoming badly root bound before that wasn't a consideration. Clay pots (or other containers that have gas-permeable walls) will always be healthier for your plants - no matter which soil you choose. The price you pay is the need to water more frequently, but that act of watering drives damaging CO2 from soils and brings in a fresh load of air - greatly beneficial to plants, both. Can a clay pot help compensate for a collapsing soil? Yes, to some degree it can. Roots begin to die only a few hours after being deprived of adequate aeration. The small and most important roots die first - then progressively larger roots until air again returns to the soil, allowing the plant to start a rejuvenation process. This cyclic death and regeneration of roots due to collapsed soil is very taxing from a stored energy perspective. The plant uses it's reserves or current photosynthate (food) production to regenerate roots. This means less increase in mass in other organs - including fruit. How the clay pot helps is by allowing air back into the root zone quicker, so not as many roots die when using a soil too water retentive. Al

I feel your pain!! I had an Afghan Hound that ate every thing! I had roasted a whole chicken with potatoes and carrots in one of those cook in bags, we ate the chicken and stuff but the carcass was still in the bag on the counter to be put in the trash, quick as a blink he jumped up grabbed it off the counter and snuck off with it. He ate the entire thing! bag, chicken carcass and all. All in one gulp it seemed. Well we were very worried and followed him around and lo and behold a couple days later he was out in the yard trying to do his business and have a bit of a problem. My husband had to put on some plastic gloves and lend assistance!! It was the entire bag still in one piece. No sign of the chicken LOL I had one of my Great Danes that would eat the rocks that were below the bbq grill where the grease would drip down on them, no matter how much we tried to cover that up she dug till she got those rocks and ate them. Never a problem she would pass them. That same Afghan hound had got loose from the original owner and gone trash can hopping, had apparently eaten a large wad of aluminum foil. Well that was a problem because it will not pass and will not deteriorate quickly. In fact this is how I became the owner of that dog, my vet called me and asked if I could take it on that the current owner traveled and just could not deal with the dog. I said sure. We ended up having to give him special digestive enzyme pills to help break down the foil, his other bad habit was drinking toilet water and I had the blue cleaner stuff in my toilets, well that nearly killed him, it ate holes in his stomach. I had no idea he was drinking in there. But to this day I will never put anything in my toilets again I had no idea that stuff was so dangerous Long story short he lived to be a very old dog and ate many more things in his long life including an entire Christmas ham and an entire Christmas Turtle Cheesecake! and a shoe or 2. And survived testicular cancer and the removal of um them. I hope that makes you feel a little better and know I am praying for you and your dog!!

Hello Wubba Tewksbury MA. here, about 3o miles northeast from you. I checked today and I have around 15 cups sprouting! yesterday there was only 3 0r 4. It's coming your way.

Hi Wub, Weymouth area here and I've had bachelor buttons and lettuce for several days now. But we all know those two don't really count for much they sprout in almost any weather.

Wubba, patience is the worst word in the English language for WS.

I'm not far from you, just outside of Lowell, Chelmsford line. I have my WS containers still sitting on piles and piles of snow.!!!!

Checked them about an hour ago and they are all frozen soil and no germination.

I'm glad that there is nothing yet. Still too cold out there. They are talking about more snow and mixed precip several times this week for us.

This is my 5th year WS and I've never had any germination before about April 10th. then it's a few at a time, till the end of may. Then watch out. you find green, morning and afternoon every day.

You will get germination when mother nature decides it's time. It won't be much longer for either of us now.

Hello and welcome :D

I'm zone 5b-6a too and my crocus have been blooming for a good 2 weeks! I haven't even seen frozen containers or earth since mid February :O
The difference between east and west is insane! I've been wintersowing since winter 2003 and I've never gone a year yet without my first germination beginning by March 1st.

Isn't the difference insane? I don't even have a crocus leaf showing through the ground yet, they are under snow, but a small area that has just a little bit of snow has my daffodils popping through.

Some of our worst snow storms have come in mid late March. And we have the infamous May 9th snow storm in 1977 and a horrendous mother nature April fools joke on April 1st 1997. gave me close to 3 feet of snow.!!!

And yes, we've had some real nasty cold nights in May too. May 19th, 2005, (stands out cause it was a few days before my daughter graduated college), I had to cover all my annual seedlings that night. temps dropped to 19 degrees. A few days later, my daughter graduated college and we had snow flakes falling that day too.

Such is life in New England with the old saying "if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute".

It won't be long before we are going on and on about how it is too hot and humid.

Clinton MA here. No sprouts yet as of yesterday evening. :) I do have some bulb plants coming up now, along with a few misc. established perennials poking up.

Not in Mass..But am in Rhode Island, and I have 11 containers of sprouts,out of 250...and nothing new in the last week or so...it has been so cold, the dirt is frozen again...someone said we might be getting snow ? So I am glad I dont have too many sprouts..

I bet once the weather warms, we will be wishing they slow down so we can get them planted out ! LOL

Hi Wubba, I live in the Concord/Lincoln/Sudbury area, and I don't have sprouts yet. Which is okay, it's been pretty cold, especially at night. My containers are in partial sun anyway, so they don't heat up too much.

But - I do have Crocuses and Snowdrops blooming on the south and east sides of the house, and the Witch Hazel 'Arnold Promise' is in full bloom too - some pictures I took last week -

Have a few more sprouts the last couple of days for this Eastern MA newbie. I have 4 different dianthus, ratibida,sweet peas, and gypsophila.I am so excited and can hardly wait till they are ready to plant out.I am glad that I found the winter sow site and this forum.
