I want the old-fashioned chrysanthemums

I live in the country, like my garden more natural and would love some honest chrysanthemums. The garden center chrysanthemums around here are clipped into identical dazzling domes that scarcely look like real flowers. Tall, sprawling chrysanthums were perennial autumn glories in my mother's gardens, 2 and 3 ft tall, and we never clipped them back. I have tried letting garden center plants regrow in successive years without clipping, but they seem genetically bred to remain stunted. I was told that there are, indeed, different varieties of garden chrysanthemums to be had, and that some are the older more natural ones. Anyone out there know?
