No sprouts and a snowstorm... but a sign of spring!

This morning I noticed one of our cats was very interested in something outside the basement window. Up against the house, something was digging up soil and leaves at an angle that I could not see what it was. I was about to leave to go put on some boots - we had a late season snowstorm yesterday - when it flew into a maple tree and ohhhhh what a lovely Robin!! Big and beautiful!

I'm so glad they are coming out of the woods. In winter, that's where they go here - not south as most believe.

Come on spring!!

tiffy -- my first sign of spring comes from you -- for the second year in a row, your morpho pansy seeds are the first jugs to sprout & seeing those first sprouts is the *best*! your generosity warms me again. cheers.

Wednesday when I got home from work I found 3 or 4 robins in my back yard. I was thrilled to see them and had to stop and watch them for a little while. They weren't eating from my bird feeder, they were on the ground walking around and they were pretty big in size. It was so nice to see them, I believe the go into the woods here to.

Then I noticed that there were about 14 either tulip or daffodils just breaking the surface of the soil around my flag pole. Funny how these little things can lift your spirits in such a dramatic way, I was telling everyone. Then it goes and snows that night and now it's very cold with about 2-3 inches of snow back on the ground.

There's hope though, it's supposed to hit 60 next Wednesday and I can't wait! I should start to see seedlings popping in my containers very soon.

Well...my pussy willow has soft buds on the end (green underneath when I flicked them off) AND same for my forsythia. Now be patient with me, I've been gardening for a long time but not very seriously...so I don't know names like you guys. I have (I think little hyacinth) growing next to the house right up against the foundation. Medium green long leaves with white stripe up them. I MUST learn how to post photos here. Anyway, it's getting close. Time to prune my fruit trees, I believe. Maybe I'll wait until the next rain/wind storm finishes. And then maybe wait until after the next snow storm...but soon, really soon!

We had a sunny day in the low 60's, but it was pretty windy. The two apple trees I mailordered arrived today, so I spent the afternoon getting those planted. I would give the Gaillardia a bit more time before declaring it deceased. All 5 of my 'Burgandy's are showing growth, but on the three 'Goblin's, I have to dig arround the crown to see a few specks of green, and out of 3 'Oranges and Lemons' only one has any sign of life so far. I'll wait two or three more weeks, and then look at replacing them. They were lovely last year, but I was a bit indecisive, and moved them a couple of times in the fall, so that may have been the cause of their demise. My Columbines, Agastaches, Echinaceas, and most of my Daylillies are showing some new growth too. In fact, other than shrubs, and mums, most everything is showing at least small signs of life. I am surprised about the Snapdragons, since I thought they were only hardy to zone 7. This is my first year to try them, and I picked 'Black Prince' as well. It's probably wishful thinking that they would come back in zone 5, huh? The surprise return for me was Dianthus 'Ideal Select Red'. It's supposed to be an annual, and even though they don't look great, they aren't completely dead either. I already WS some more, since I didn't think they would return. I guess I can take the extras to our regional plant swap in May. Even though I'm pretty tired after all that digging, it sure felt good to work outdoors again! Happy spring! Bonnie

Yes, you are so right! I worked out all day yesterday. The only things I planted were the snapdragons. There is so much blooming right now it is beginning to look pretty. I put out the Blue ceramic birdbath and a couple of other things, but I mainly did (Yet more)digging, weeding, and trimming things. I dug up most of the oregano that had gone crazy, and left just a start of it again. I have this huge shrub that I am going to work at digging up today. The hummers and the butterflies love it, but it is in the wrong place and encroching on my daylilies. That will not do. I planted a piece of it, so if I kill it, it is okay. There is a new start ready to plant in the greenhouse. I also have three clumps of the Tropicana Cannas I am going to dig up. They just don't stay pretty where they are. I have a huge clump of them in another areas too that I will leave alone. kay

Ox, It always feels like spring has arrived in Feb. here in southern OK, and probably in most of the rest of the region too but winter drops back in once every 7-10 days until the end of April most years, just to keep us guessing! Just watch.....and you'll see. : ) Helen and Ada, I speak to all the wild things, and sometimes they speak to me. For example, if I am slow to put out the deer corn in late afternoon on winter days, the does make the fawns stay in the woods while the does stand in the pasture and "scream" for me to hurry up and get the corn put out for them. They have me trained really, really well. Carol, I noticed that on the Mesonet as well, and I have been trying hard not to gloat. We haven't had the "most rain" on any given day here in Marietta in probably a couple of years. And, that mere half-inch of moisture dropped our Keetch-Byram Drought Index from 674 to 640 in one day. That's a huge drop, considering the KDBI usually only goes up 1 or 2 points a day. It was getting so close to 700, which is extremely high, so I feel better now that it is back in the mid-600s. Dorothy, The buds are swelling on my fruit trees. Have you seen anything similar? I am starting to hope for a couple of cold nights to slow them down, because it seems like they are trying to bloom too early, and that, I suppose, is yet another sign of spring. Dawn

This one was big too and he had the brightest rust red breast I've ever seen.

'That snow' which you mention is what we got yesterday. I remember when we were young we always used to listen to the 'Boston' radio station to see what weather we were going to get in the next while. We had to listen to all the Red Sox games since my father was such a great fan and wouldn't miss a game. :O)

Our Robins have been coming in alot more every day,first few sightings there were only about 6,now there are at least 12 or more on an average out there,they were happy I turned over some dirt and were having a worm fiesta earlier today!

The robins do migrate south from here. And I saw 4 or 5 in the yard this morning! WAHOOOO!
Maybe all this snow and ice is going to melt after all.

I've been seeing Canadian honkers (geese) flying north the last week or so too. They do winter over in the cities up here but we never see them out in our neck of the woods until spring.

The robin was a great sight this morning though that is for sure!

I saw a robin a few days ago, He was hopping around a bare patch in the back yard and seemed very upset that there was still snow on the ground!LOL! this time of year they'll also eat mushy apples. I'm also looking for spring bulbs namely the english bluebells I planted, they were iffy for my zone!-B
