Doing some early fall clean-up

Unlike many of you, I don't do any fertilizing or watering at all during the growing season other than watering- in new transplants. I use wood chip mulch but other than that, there is no nutrition going into my gardens that doesn't come from the garden.

In the fall, I cut everything back (I use my DR brush cutter in the late fall for everything I didn't do before) and leave everything just where it is. In the forest (that surrounds my gardens) nobody fertilizes or waters and it is just plain lush in the spring and bursting with wildflowers of all kinds. I figure I should learn from that and just let the spent stalks and blooms lay where they die.

This makes sense to me. In the veggie garden, I rake up the grass/weeds that were mowed in the late fall and that feeds the soil for the spring.

It works and my gardens are lush and beautiful. No money outlay at all.
