Azalea Pruning - mature Azalea

I have 10-15 Azaleas in my back yard that receive a good amount of sun during the Houston summer. They are very large plants measuring 6 feet in height and 5-6 feet wide.

For the past few years I have lost a plant or two because of some type of fungus at the bottom of the plant. I screwed that up big time.

I want to revive new growth, as you can see from the pictures, they have alot of wood on the inside of the plant, and are only leafy on the outside.

What is the best pruning/fertilizing strategy for this?

I am new to Azaleas, and any guid lines would help.
