? cause of tree death re:? fungus

I have a center tear drop drive, has 8 flowering crabapple trees. They have been in close to 30 yrs. The tip tree died several years ago as did another 1 in the shape. This year another one died. Are they getting to old? (I know some trees do NOT have long life spans - is this one of them?) My son went to helps us remove the one that died recently as we thought it might be a problem. Anyway, he pushed on it an it just cracked and fell right over. He mentioned a friend of his who has something to do in the horitculture field said a tree that comes out that easy could have a fungus. How do I tell if that is so? and is there a way to get rid of it (thefungus) cuz I planted a different kind of tree near that one and don't want to lose it as well.

I have decided to plant trees in 2's across from each other to fill in the formation.

Tough to say. If just one died I'd say Crabapples aren't excessively long lived trees and chalk it up to whatever. More than one......hmmmm...

What happened, did they all just decide not to leaf out in the spring each year? Or did their tops die back to the bottom? Anything like its been excessively wet or cold?

Could just be luck. In the last 4 years four, should be five, silver maples have been cut down in my yard and the three around me. Three dropping limbs top down, two rotting bottom up. At least yours are smaller and manageable.

Could be butt rot. But with info provided impossible to tell. 30 years is a good age, maybe around average but since we have no idea where you are located and paucity of info, tough to give advice.

I know what this is..... it's a fungus. Once you've seen a fungus and know it's symptoms it becomes a matter of what works best to remedy it. I wasn't asking for advice from a doctor here, I was asking herbalists for a practical remedy. I should have searched the archives, and I apologize for this but If I ask a question to this group, it's because I have No intentions of seeing a doctor. If I want to see a doctor, I'll see a doctor. If someone here asks a question and I'm familar with the symptoms, I'll offer alternative treatment advice. And if I think it will be helpful, I will offer that they visit an alternative practioner. The only way I could be seen by a doctor will be if I am in an accident, and taken to an emergency room or in the event I need to be sutured. That is because ole time doctors are history. A thing of the past. They no longer exist. Everyone knows in advance of posting here that they can go see a doctor. I realize you aren't aware of this but I've seen what messes a person can get into when seeing a doctor. Doctors are puppets of the big pharma industry as most here know. No longer can we depend on a cure from a doctor. They can't even use the word anymore. They can treat. That treatment often leads to a myriad of other maladies real or trumped up. Alls I'm sayin is this... and don't take this to personally... Thanks but No thanks.

What usually happens with these fragile trees is cambium kill, often in early spring. Sometimes it seems the kill creates a kind of delayed action and trees flower, leaf out and look perfectly healthy until late spring or so. I do not know exactly what conditions create this injury or delayed symptoms but the injury itself certainly has to do with a pretty hard freeze at a point where trees are softening up. Apricots lose their winter hardening earlier than any fruit tree I know. In my nursery I have a plum that apparently suffered the same thing this year although no trees around it, including the same variety, suffered a similar fate. The tree was fully leafed out and healthy looking and then seemed to die overnight with brown leaves still attached. In this case, I can see the problem area along the trunk but with apricots it isn't generally apparent by superficial inspection in my experience. When there are no cankers or root injury or obvious girdling i think cambium injury is the only thing that causes this kind of sudden death, although that is a leap. I'm just a grower and not a pathologist.

mcaren, This is a greatly debated topic. Kimmsr, myself, and many others see no good reason to throw away organic materials. Some other people are really afraid of their compost and are likely to spend money to buy plastic bags so they can bag up their organic matter to throw away and then the will go purchase sterilized organic matter in more plastic bags to put on their gardens and compost piles. (I personally see this as silly and I can't afford it anyway.) You have several choices of how to best compost your "diseased plants", 1-live recklessly and just throw it on the current pile. 2-Start a new pile for your diseased stuff and that way you can make sure the new pile reaches sufficient temperatures to deal with the new additions. (This way your current pile can be put to rest and ready to use come spring.) Using a seprate pile for this season's stuff will let you decide if you want to be selective about when/where to use that particular compost and you can also let it age longer. Since you seem to be having fungus problems, corn meal might be a good addition sprinkled into the compost pile to promote good fungus that will help control the bad fungus you are having trouble with. Again, since you say the are seems to be surrounded and teaming with these problems, throwing away some of your garden plants isn't likely to make a dent in the spore load around your garden. You are better off creating more compost that can help grow stronger plants which can hopefully withstand the problems.

more pix.. by replying to your own post ... thats all the GW system allows ... more pix please you said: There is almost no visible new growth (but I do see some fruit buds in place of some of the dead flowers). if the flowers were fertilized.. and you see fruit forming.. what more could you want ...??? not many of us grow As .... there may be another forum.. maybe even the fruit forum ... if there isnt a A forum ... i always reason that the wider your audience.. the more info you will get ... the leaves i see in your one pic ... sure look nice to a guy who still has snow in his yard .... lol . welcome to gW ... ken

Zone 1? Hardiness zone 1? Are we talking about Fairbanks or Central Canada? My limited travels are showing. Crabapples grow there?

I don't travel much, only been to Alaska once, then just on the Kenai Peninsula where winter temps aren't soo bad but it looked like snow load was a big deal to the trees..

sorry! I just looked in my Sunset Western Garden Book and they say I a in zone 1. by this link, we are in zone 5. we live in NE az 7K elevation on the north slope It can get pretty cold and we had a very long cold winter last year.

can't help but think the tree was diseased somehow. It had dea parts and we had been systematically pruning attempting to rejuveninate it. what struck us so odd was how it just pushed over - did't even need to dig out the stump etc. which made my son and I wonder about a fungus.
