Very spiky/thorny and challenging to work nearby. Also large.

Took it out because it was a potential hazard for my dogs.

It's deer resistant...they've never touched mine. It's drought tolerant and performs better in droughty years than wet ones, but it's not too picky. It is the most asked about plant in my garden. I have it growing next to a pink flower carpet rose and the contrast in form is really great. The blooms last a long time. The foliage can senesce a bit after it blooms, but you can cut it back to the ground and new foliage will sprout. A very easy adaptable plant. I have the species. I know Tony Avent sells a cultivar of it called 'Kershaw Blue', but I really don't know how the cultivar compares to the species.

Thanks -- I'm looking for a globe shape to use among the spires of salivas. This looks like it last longer than echinops.

I'd never consider mine spiky or thorny and it's no problem to work around. I grow "Kershaw Blue' and do think it is bluer. It's a handsome, architectural plant.

I've been growing it for a few years, but not much has happened (started from seed). It's rather thin and floppy and not very impressive in it's current spot. I may have to consider moving it...

Is it one of those plants that is best planted in spring or fall? PDN is having an open house soon.

I have three clumps that I grew from seeds. I planted them among Switch grass, Little blue stem, Rudbeckia triloba, Echinacea purpurea & Helenium. I have Purple Love grass at their feet. :-) A little unkempt, but I like the combination.

I planted the seedlings in spring of last year. Yesterday, I just moved one clump closer to the other two.

According to my records, I originally planted mine in the Fall and I have divided it in the Fall a couple times over the years. No problems.

I grew eryngium yuccifolium a few years back, but it died out and I didn't bother to replace it. After reading all the positive comments on this thread, I really think I should try it again, especially as I like to grow many native plants in my garden.

Gorgeous dusty blue-grey foliage and greenish flower ball. I purchased in from White Flower Gardens about 8 years ago. Very slow increaser but definitely a conversation piece.
