New Angelfish on the market? Pterophyllum orange kois etc.

I have to say, though it seems the larger and perhaps more colorful cichlids may be the "in" fish for collectors perhaps these days, the old fashioned fresh water angelfish were always my favorites or at least in the top few of favorites, but going to over four different local chains and small pet stores, I only found one or two regular angles in total for all those stores. It's either a case of the stores not stocking many of them anymore, or they're the first fish to sell after a new shipment comes in. Very disappointing to say the least, but in my search online to find some sources there, I came upon a site that sells some new vaieties I'd never seen before, though they're extremely expensive and of course very small fish for the prices. Anyway if the pictures aren't at all retouched those "new"?? orange kois are the most colorful angels I've ever seen and I'd love to have those. From past experience though, it seemed to me that all those sports, mutations, or just selective breeding made for some very hard to keep and sensitive breeds, or at least it seemed that way to me. I'd be curious, if any of our tropical fish enthusiasts on this forum has similar experiences with all those various breeds of angels and if anyone has yet tried the new orange koi varieties. It just seems, though I might save my pennies for a while to buy a few of those exciting new angels I have a suspicion they'd be even the most difficult to keep alive yet bred?? At over $50 each for "dime sized bodies" I'd sure hate to lose them!!!

The Koi angels are a crossbreed of golden and blushing angels, I think. They have become very popular. I guess they are more "sensitive" being that the blushing angel is supposed to be the most sensitive>>. $50 is alot for this fish. I could have sworn I have seen them from $5-$10. I have never bred angels but from what I have heard it is not considered difficult. The Koi's shouldn't be any different. I know if you do a yahoo search on angel breeding you will get several excellent articles and directions.

I had no way of knowing how long the kois have been around and the old thing of "supply and demand" applies to even any new fish on the market, though from what you've said they're available in stores now?? I sure wouldn't pay those prices if I could find them offered for less even in local stores. I do remember having problems however with the blushers though year back!!

i have no idea about the koi they said they bought. i just know what i saw. one fish had white spots on its tail and another had a large white patch of what appeared to be rolled back looking skin on the edges. when i asked they said a haring bird must have attached him. but a friend of mine bought some fish from them that day. she drove from va to get them. when she got them home one had a broken top fin. the yellow one had large white spots on its tail, and another one that was orange and white had part of its tail missing and lots of white spotting on it. now this is not to discredit them as sellers at all. pond koi from my understanding do have parisites and such. and these fish were caught that morning and brought to the sale. with out being treated or anything. she used some prema fix and malafix and they all seem to be doing well now. also, the fish are getting darker in color. i think it is the koi clay that she is using in the pond and on there food. but it is not a real big deal. when you pay so cheap for the fish you would expect to have to treat them and quariteen them.. i mean 3.00 a fish, you can't expect way to much. she is happy with them though. i do wish they would have had some true red ones and some with darker colors or longer fins. i have a butterfly the same size and his fins are way bigger than hers.. i like the long flowing fins.. just my opion...

will the sand affect my pond life? Yes, but probably not a lot. Certain kinds of life, animal and plant, will make the sand home if they make it to your pond. What plant life should I add to feed my fish and welcome in other wildlife like frogs and dragonflies? That really depends on the person. I like to add any plant I can and see how it does. It stays if I like it. That's how I learn. So for me I'd try any plant, and I'd try it different ways...in water, in soil, in sun, in shade, etc., to learn how it grows. Duckweed is a plant fish will eat directly, but after they've eaten it all it's gone. So if you want an on going duckweed food source you have to protect some or easier imo is growing it in a separate shallow pond. But a more important food source is all the life in a pond, mainly insects. They eat the plants and the fish eat the insects. So all plants really feed fish indirectly. Dead, rotting plant material feeds insects the best. But many people don't like that in their pond...so it's really best to decide what kind of pond you want...Wildlife Pond, Water Garden or Koi Pond. That determines how plants are used. You can try one and if you don't like it you can change to another pretty easy or some pond in between. the water looks a little murky. (BONUS QUESTION) Is there any way to clean that up? It's pretty simple to clear up water but only after you know what's causing it to be murky which is the complex part. There are lots of filters and methods to removing different things so the filter has to be matched to the stuff being removed. One pretty universal murky clear is a 24/7 drip water change system. A drip emitter runs 24/7 into the pond and an overflow takes away the extra water. I plan on heading over to a local park nearby and yanking out a couple of cattails and whatever else I find interesting, I highly doubt it's illegal and the poor little stream that leads to the enormous carp pond is choking with all the vegetation. (OH! I know that these plants will probably have other bacteria and algae and critters on or in it, is there any way to clean them without killing them? There are chemical baths you can use, including chlorine and similar oxidizers. They aren't super effective imo. The question is do you want to do that or are all these critters something you want? You see this goes back to deciding what kind of pond you want. A Koi Pond owner with thousands of dollars worth of koi would never allow any plant within 10' of their pond. Their focus is koi and the risk of pathogen form plant would be unacceptable. At the other end of the pond spectrum a Wildlife Pond owner would welcome all those "pathogens". It's a matter of perspective. To these pond keepers "pathogen" is just another name for "life". That's what natural ponds are, life. Stuff killing and eating other stuff. I want to make sure the plants are settled before getting fish, but I heard that a certain string? Algae is a pain to get rid of, does that grow in zone 9?) You don't get rid of algae, you control it. Just like you weed a garden. Algae grows in all zones, from the poles to the equator. There are thousands of species. ...since I live in zone 9 in one of the cities that borders the Rio Grande, Does anyone have any recommendations for the type of plants I might want to scavenge for, how to transport and transplant them from the stream into my pond, and what no-no plants I should try to avoid? Giant Reed, Arundo donax, is a spectacular plant you can probably find. It's an aggressive grower, makes bamboo look like Pussy Willow. I don't believe there is such a thing as a no-no plant. They're plants, you're a human. I have to assume you can win any battle. Ponds are just like any garden. If you tend it you win. If you go away and come back in a year the plants win. (If I find any I kind of want some duckweed... is this a no-no plant? Will keeping the growth at bay turn into an overwhelming hassle for my medium-small sized pond?) Depends on how much hassle you consider keeping a pond is. For me it's a joy. And whether your fish.eat it. I want goldfish!! I hear commits are really friendly, but what other species can I add? Can someone supply a list? Oh, and how many can I add? (I was thinking about 6-8 fish total) Common, Comets, Shubunkin, Wakin. The fancy kinds can look a little out of place. I've had some of these because friends need to get rid of "pets" sometimes. They look a little odd to me when mixed with other kinds. Like when you feed them the others swim over fast and the Fantail seems to struggle to swim 10'. But the fancy ones seemed to do fine but need exact protection from streams, skimmers, etc., as they're not strong swimmers.. The Common, Comets and Shubunkin are also often crossed. Like a Comets and Shubunkin to get a Shubunkin with a long tail. Commons get the biggest, more than 12" and over 3' sometimes although these may be koi crosses. (Even numbers so they can have a buddy system, but not like Nohas ark, they can only be friends!! No babies!!... okay maybe a few so I can add them to future smaller water features around the garden...) You can post a sign explaining breeding rules but goldfish are either not very good readers or not very good rule followers (even worst than teenagers). which leads me to the after thought question... Can different species of goldfish mate? I mean.. they are still goldfish... Yes. When different kinds of goldfish breed the result is considered a goldfish too. Goldfish can also breed with koi. I know that bottom feeders won't eat all the gunk that will eventually fill the bottom, (I can't blame them) But are there any fish that I can add that will eat the bottom pellets? (Like catfish maybe, or something cooler/cuter) Pellets, as in sinking food pellets? Goldfish, koi, catfish, pretty much any fish will eat food on the bottom. There are terms like "bottom feeder" but that's just a general type thing. Like catfish will spend most of their time on the bottom but will eat food on the surface just like a goldfish or koi. And they will come a running when they see you just like goldfish and koi. As for gunk...bacteria lives there, bugs too which eat the bacteria, bigger bugs that eat the smaller bugs and fish root around in there looking for bugs to eat. It's a whole cycle thing. Gunk on the pond bottom is basically soil, or stuff on it's way to becoming soil. Nothing removes it completely, just like nothing removes soil completely. Stuff lives in it, eats some growing in it, breaks it down into better and better soil (from a plant's perspective). Oh, and is Walmart a smart place to buy these babies at? (I'm sure most are familiar with the store...) My only other option is PetCo... Are they a good option? I don't want to buy bad fish... but I would feel terrible if I had to take a fish back because it was sick or it got the others sick... There not really anything like a "good" store to by goldfish. Here's how it wroks. The store orders fish from a grower. The grower has a bunch of ponds with different kinds of fish. The grower puts a bunch of fish into a box and sends it to the store. The store dumps the box of fish into a big tank. An employee gets a net and scoops out a few of the the prettier fish and puts these into separate tanks. Like for instance some Shubunkins would go into a tank labeled "Shubunkin $4.95". And some orange and white Comets will often be labeled "Sarasa $4.95" even though they aren't actually Sarasa. The rest in the big tank are labeled "Feeder Goldfish 20 for $1". When customers buy $4.95 fishes the clerks grab a net and scoop a few more nicer looking fish out of the feeder tank and into the $4.95 tanks. People just assume when they see 10 fish in a nice aquarium at eye level that they must be higher quality and healthier fish than the horrible feeder fish tank. It's just marketing and logistics. You can often find very nice looking Shubunkins and Comets in the feeder tank. It just depends on what they get in. Growers don't care since it's just as easy to grow Commons or Comets or Shubunkins. They'll send whatever they have. The fancy goldfish may be shipped in separate containers. This is not to say all fish are healthy. In my experience 50% of feeder fish died in the first 24 hours. And in most stores they also don't last long either. Yes, you can quarantine them, you can treat them for parasites, etc. Depends on the kind of pond you want to keep. Most ponds I've had I only used feeder goldfish. Set up a quarantine tank and buy $10 worth of meds to treat $1 worth of fish...not me. I just put them into the pond and hope for the best. But that's me. I do want to hand feed my fish. I know the risks of them getting hurt by other animals but I have 3 small dogs that scare away all cats and wild animals, but are really just yapping balls of harmless fur. Pretty much all kinds of fish can be trained to be hand fed. Takes them a few times to get the idea but once they do they're trained. The 3 small dogs...I hate to impugn the K9 reputation for diligence but all that yapping..yeah, that's mostly for your benefit. When you're not around and the Herons are having brunch the dogs are really unlikely to do more than blink at the carnage. The Herons aren't hurting anything...it's not like they're doing something horrible like squeezing a squeaky toy. They're just eating all of your fish. Big woop. Now if the dogs happen to hear you at the front door then sure, they'll be off like a rocket to tear that Heron a new beak, jumping through plate glass windows, busting down doors, whatever it takes to impress you and keep those treats flowing.

You all are so nice. There is so much to think about. Today I couldn't even get a professional looking invoice going on my computer. It is getting a bit overwhelming. Bronwynsmom, that is a great idea about the lighting. In fact we already have hooks in the garage ceiling from when we hung a canoe there, and I have some leftover shop light fixtures from when I was growing seedlings in the basement. Megsy, I can't wait to see the finished product either. I just hope it isn't years from now! Seriously, I will show pics if it comes out alright. Carminnc, what a great picture. That is my kind of world with all that color and all those flowers! I see what you mean about how it all goes together. i wish you could all come to my house too to help paint. I first saw the Koi Angels a few years ago in a persons house I was working at. It turned out that he bred them and sold them on the internet. I then started noticing them in LFS's. I am not sure how long they have been around.Thats when I first noticed them, could have very well been overlooked because I didn't know of their existance. I do know that 20+ years ago in my location only veiltails, black, silver and marble where available. Then again I was limited to as far as I could pedal my bike.

I guess I'm outside the mainstream these days since I've not had a car in many years, and I don't get to the larger stores in more urban places like Detroit , which is sixty miles from me and with no bus available these days. I did see some pretty two inch albino oscars today at a Walmart near me and those had lots of pink spots which I wondered would stay on them the rest of their lives? I'd love having some breeding angels, though my one pair years ago, didn't seen to produce fertile eggs, even though I think I had a pair. I guess however, angels can fool you, when two decide they'll try spawning even when you have two females. It did seem the one had a longer and thinner spawning tube, while the other did produce eggs, but none ever looked fertile. I must say somewhat surprising to me is that it seems so far, that our local Walmart has the healthiest looking fish and the cheapest aquariums and other associated items. I think even the pearl scale? ones weren't around, when I had my angels years ago. though there were blushing ones, veils, zebra lace, blacks, and black lace or veils, etc. and I've not spent much time over the past several decades in pet stores , so I may have missed the kois somewhere along the way.

It's expensive to stay on the leading edge. In a few years they will priced much lower. There's too many breeders competing to keep the price up.

The Koi angels are currently about$7 each. They also have a good selection of fish and plants, as well as S.W. critters and live rock. They also have even better prices then Wal-Mart on some items and a huge selection ( that site is www.drsfostersmith.com).

hmmm, oculd you post a link to that "orange koi" angel. my breeding pair years ago was a female koi and a male marble (high percentage of body black). my spawns were marbles and kois.

before i was into the hobby, i didn'tlike angelfish. i thought there were only striped ones. then, shortly into the hobby, i fell in love with the beauty of this male and prefer marbles to this day. they are no more sensitive, imo. unfortunately (to me) i found a male koi and split up my breeding pair in order to have both male and female koi together. i took a chance but they bonded...my beautiful male was, well, i am being sappy.

thank you, woeisme! yep. my kois had less black than the one on the right, closer to the blusher but with more black than that. i guess wht i am trying to say, mine weren't somewhere in the middle, closer to the lighter end, but not enough to say that is what it looked like. some people call them gold marbles, i think. mine had an intense orange on the 'forehead' but no blushing. one of my fry did come out blushing.

by orange koi, i was picturing the entire body being orange. i so wish i had a pic of my marble. he even had some blue...i mean real blue (though only in his dorsal fin) and not a blue ghost blue. amazing.

I have to think if I decide I do want angels again, I'll be lucky to find even the most "basic" ones here, since it seems none of the stores here even have any. I asked one place , why no angels and she said they were ordered but didn't arrive, and I just wonder if they're so popular that the suppliers and breeders can't keep up with demand. I like even the species ones, if those are even available these days, but I'd think unless breeders were carefull over these many years of breeding them domestically they might be a bit "mixed" as far as blood lines go. I've had blacks and marbles and love those as well, but I might want to try some of the newer breeds.

Now that I learned the very simple task of copy, cut and paste, I can provide more links easier. I'm better at DIY then pc's LOL. The info here is usually accurate. Here's a link to the spot I mentioned, if that's ok! They have some that even have a combination of black, white , and orange on the same fish, but the most expensive have nearly all orange bodies, I guess?

well, all i can say is daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang. i have never seen so much orange!

my koi was most like the middle pic on woeisme's posted link, with normal fins. the male had more intense orange than she did but nothing along the lines of covering 90% of the body....

what i have noticed is it is getting harder to find angels without the notch between the mouth and eye, making it look likethere is a nose. the ones i picked, except one inadvertently, looked more rounded or smooth. then again, they were small and i am wondering if the notch is becoming visible as they grow.

The Koi Angels have been around for at least 15 years. The problem with getting Agels thru retail outlets is that during the mid-80's they developed some sort of viral infection that is almost always fatal. Most of the commercial wholesalers became infected and healthy Angels became impossible to get thru them. That only left hobbiest as a source of good fish. Healthy ones are still very hard to find thru pet stores. I make it a rule to never buy Angels that have been in a store for less than two weeks or I have to know they are getting them thru a breeder and not a wholesaler. Then never mix new fish with old ones until you've had the new ones for a couple months. If they survive that long you can be reasonably sure they are healthy.

I have one of the orange koi angelfish that is mated with a zebra angelfish. So far no babies but I am not ready to raise any. I will be building a fish room in the garage with in a few weeks so that I may breed not just angelfish but other animals like the dwarf orange crawfish.

Hi there. Did you say you were around Detroit? I'm currently breeding a gold pearl scale with a veil koi. Might be a gold marble veil. Kinda hard to tell. Gorgeous though. How the hell do ya post a pic in here? I'll see if I can figure it out. Anyway, I'll be happy to give you a couple when they're ready. They just laid eggs last week, but due to a recent tank switch they got a lil freaked & ate them. They'll breed again soon, I'm sure. That was their 4th time. Took me an eternity but Sierra told me how. Go to the "gallery" by clicking "gallery" at the top of the first thread message. Once you are there scroll all the way down to post a new message. If you scroll down past that there are directions. Anyway, print your text part then hit "preveiw message". It is there where you can add the pic. They have to be resized to 60 kb or less. You can use your photo software on your pc to adjust and resize. This was the part that had me, I couldn't find that option for a while. I have photosuite 4, it is in the upper left hand corner where it says (file) (edit) (adjust). Click adjust then click resize from that menu after you have picked a picture.

Thanks woeisme. I think I got it figured out. It says only the topics listed with the camera icon can post pix though. That's where I got stumped. No camera icon in aquariums.

There is a "back door" to put it on a post in discussions. I don't really know how. I think you have to use "photo bucket" and go to a board in here that uses the camera icon. I think once you do it there it allows you to post on this board somehow>> I really don't know how, but thats the way I got it from someone, I think? LOL

Well guys,
I was amazed by these orange marble kois. When I found some nice veil tailed varieties, I bought the whole bunch (cost me a fortune and I felt stupid but I could not resist buying them).
Now I plan to quit breeding my big black marble veils and focus on breeding these orange kois. The ones I have are all veils and the orange is only on the forehead like red cap oranda goldfish. They are the mable variety and have a few black streaks on a silver background and appear more beautiful than the almost completely orange ones seen on the mellow aquatics web site. Without doubt, I am impressed by the fish at mellow aquatics and have no reason not to believe them. In the next few years I am sure orange angels of many variations will be top sellers and widely available.
