Buddleia Butterfly Bush prepping for Winter??

Hi Happy Labor Day!!

Last year our Buddleia Butterfly Bush was the first season and bloomed beautiful. This year 2007 I kept watch over the old twigs after I had pruned. I did not think it had survived the winter so pulled it out of the ground. Too my surprise the roots were very much alive, that is when I learned this plant is root hardy not stem hardy here in MIchigan zone 5 and a late starter. I put it back in the ground and told it I was SORRY!!! HA HA !! So for this next season I want to be more prepared. The plant grew and did bloom however it was not as large as last year.

If I put a cone over to protect it this coming winter would that help? The winter winds in that area of that bed are bad it is like a tunnel between 2 houses and the winds just roar down on that bed. Even though the Knock Out Roses have done very well with out cones. Also when should I prune the Butterfly bush??

Thanks Lary
