When do you sow pepper seeds?

I don't even have any pepper seeds, wasn't planning on growing them, but on another forum people were talking about peppers.

Reading about them made me think about how I love peppers and how I rarely buy them they are SO expensive where I live.

These guys are growing them inside [heck, why would anyone do that?! :)], but transposing to WS'ing, I'm thinking in my zone 6, around April 1st.

Does that sound right?

How long to germinate?

I understand they are very frost sensitive.

Ellen see you are in my frozen land. I have already planted and put out side in the cold. Planning on doing alot of peppers this year so more to follow. They need warm conditons to sprout.

Ellen, we are having a terribly early spring here but I did go ahead and set out about 6 containers of various peppers/chilis this very afternoon. Now I see it's gonna be in the 20s overnite so guess who has to go out in her nightie and fetch the containers in!

Oh, well, with temps in the 60s & 70s during the day OUTSIDE - so I do not have to use a heat mat - or MY electricity = "priceless". So if you want to keep them warm inside at least @ night & have them outside in the daytime, I'd say go for it.

Need seeds? I have a whole bunch of Orange Bell seeds, and some great jalapeno seeds, too. Let me know...

You should have good luck with the granex types in Atlanta which are what Vidalias are from just a bit south. Check your Georgia extension service for cultural information; they have been intimately involved with commercial development of that variety of onion. As I understand it, the process starts with thick early fall planting of seed for transplanting later in the autumn to a better spacing in production beds to winter over to a late spring or early summer harvest, but you should be able to get specifics from the extension service. Else you can almost certainly get bunches of started plants for spring planting from quite a number of sources. That's what I do up here in Minneapolis with good results for Copra and cipollinis, or you can grow your own sets from a late thickly planted bed of seed that matures mid to late summer for planting back the next spring. My parents did that for years back when I was growing up. My mother always got a good crop of onions off her sets.

Nasturtiums are like callas, Zantedeschia aethiopica. They like cool soil, and once the ground heats up, they're outta here. If you have a morning sun, shaded spot and offer regular water, they'll stick around a good long while. We are 25 miles from the coast, at the very edge of the SF Bay fog belt. All the nasturtiums are now yellowed and fading, even in the backyard where two massive trees shade it from 10a onwards. I sow the Alaska variegated and the really dark red nasturtiums every year. They're not as vigorous as the standard variety so they don't return as well. I usually do it around mid-December, when the ground has softened up with some good storms. But a month or so either way doesn't seem to make much difference.

I grow mainly sugar snap peas, the 6 foot tall type. Most years they go in between the end of February and mid March. If your soil is too wet you could rake in a couple of inches of loose soil from your paths which will raise and warm your pea row. June is pea picking month in New Jersey, my sugar snap peas will often continue to produce into July if the weather stays moderate. There are super early varieties that might be ready in May, peas with a pick date from emergence of 60 days or less, but I haven't tried them. This would also be a good time to plant lettuce. My German neighbor used to grow fava beans or broad beans. As I recall they are another 'beat the heat' plant and will germinate in cold soil, and I think they must be harvested before the dog days begin.

Ok. Next year, hopefully, is my first year of not buying plants, because I couldn't get the one's I wanted this year. I live in a 'Flyover' area so my resources are limited. I bought the best resource book I knew of, and I'm following their directions. I'm Midwestern and hot foods do not appeal to me. I garden mostly by the rules that I was taught by my grandmother in the back yard garden. I am a Master Gardener who learns something new about growing (and sometimes killing things) all the time, and tries to share it. This isn't a competition. I'm just trying to help. Peace. Blue Cat.

I'm with mlcom - you don't have to wait until April 1. I'll be sowing mine by next week. It's the seedlings that are frost sensitive, not the seeds.

When I sow them mid-March, it takes about 2-3 weeks for germination. Of course, you could sow them later too - they'd probably come up faster. Your choice.

Peppers tend to have a long DTM, so that's why a lot of folks start them inside - to get a jump on that time, especially in places with short growing seasons.

Personally, there's no way for me to start seeds inside. so I WS them. Two plants give me a decent yield every year.

P.S. - irisgirl, it's too cold to be running around outside in your nightie! Those containers will be just fine.

I would like some seeds, just a few -send me your addy, and I'll send you a SASE bubble.

So let me get this right - it's not too late to sow right?
And once they germinate (how long does that take?)
they should be protected from frost?

Well once they germinate, it will probably be beyond the frost date here?
And does anyone direct sow also?
I thot about direct sowing some vegies, for comparison.

I started some hot peppers in side last year. It took them forever to grow peppers. I ended up buying some plants to supplement.

My hubby and I love them and I make hot sauce out of them. I did not get enough hot ones last year to make good sauce :(

I may try again this year if I have enough seeds and containers. I will WS them (probably in Early April)
