Help... ideas on how this happened and what type of tree is this?

Hi,

We're from So. Cal. Need help with how this branch/limb could have fallen; disease, death or the human element and can anyone tell us what type of tree this is? We have forgotten.

Storm would be the immediate cause, the clustered branching being the weak point and all the I.d. needed to identify this as a callery pear, cultivar notwithstanding.

Serious case of insufficient water. You'll have to run the drip system much longer. Folks who are newcomers to using a drip system typically make the same error- they don't run the system long enough to wet the root system. So I always suggest some homework with which they can convince themselves. One way to find out how long it should run is to run the system for your usual time, then afterward stick a trowel into the ground in order to determine how deep and wide the water went. Or you can estimate how much water the drippers put out with a bit of finger math. Let's say that your drippers put out one gallon per hour. If run for 5 minutes, that's 1/12th of a gallon. Not much. But if the drippers are half gallon per hour, consider that the plants receive just half of the above. Far less than above. Simpler still, is to put one of the drippers in a bucket, run the system for 5 minutes, then measure the amount of water in the bucket. Is that enough for the plant's needs or not?

Thanks again guys. I have the stump and tree remover. I'm gonna remove it next week. Already made the order to get a western red-bud and a cherokee brave dogwood tree. BTW my dogwood tree has buds, some buds are even progressing so much i have some buds forming 2 other semi buds on the ends. However some buds aren't full size so should i worry about it? or will the buds still open up. But im noit worried about bradford suckers, if so i'll dig them up and give them to my ex-girlfriend lol

The soil is very hard and I have to usually use a pick and a shovel to break through the layers when digging. When i was surface watering it would not seep through very well. The core of the root ball was about 1 foot below the surface when planted 3 years ago and I'm watering from 2-3 feet down until the water level rises back to the top because I was recommended the deep root stakes as it encourages root growth downwards where the water tends to remain longer during summer months and because the hard clay soil tends to spread water outwards rather than down like loose or sandy soil. I was told these trees need a lot of water but infrequently so I'm putting about 40 gallon worth per tree every month but I don't know how much is actually reaching the roots. I'll buy the chelated iron asap and dig to see soil mosture content 1-2ft deep. If it turns out to be over-watering can the trees survive and what can I do other than just wait before the next watering cycle?

If you're using a water-retentive medium, deep pots are easier to grow in because they will have a higher % of soil that isn't saturated when a perched water table is in play: Choosing an Appropriate Size Container How large a container ‘can’ or ‘should’ be, depends on the relationship between the mass of the plant material you are working with and your choice of soil. We often concern ourselves with "over-potting" (using a container that is too large), but "over-potting" is a term that arises from a lack of a basic understanding about the relationship we will look at, which logically determines appropriate container size. It's often parroted that you should only move up one container size when "potting-up". The reasoning is, that when potting up to a container more than one size larger, the soil will remain wet too long and cause root rot issues, but it is the size/mass of the plant material you are working with, and the physical properties of the soil you choose that determines both the upper & lower limits of appropriate container size - not a formulaic upward progression of container sizes. In many cases, after root pruning a plant, it may even be appropriate to step down a container size or two, but as you will see, that also depends on the physical properties of the soil you choose. It's not uncommon for me, after a repot/root-pruning to pot in containers as small as 1/5 the size as that which the plant had been growing in prior to the work. Plants grown in ‘slow’ (slow-draining/water-retentive) soils need to be grown in containers with smaller soil volumes so that the plant can use water quickly, allowing air to return to the soil before root issues beyond impaired root function/metabolism become a limiting factor. We know that the anaerobic (airless) conditions that accompany soggy soils quickly kill fine roots and impair root function/metabolism. We also know smaller soil volumes and the root constriction that accompany them cause plants to both extend branches and gain o/a mass much more slowly - a bane if rapid growth is the goal - a boon if growth restriction and a compact plant are what you have your sights set on. Conversely, rampant growth can be had by growing in very large containers and in very fast soils where frequent watering and fertilizing is required - so it's not that plants rebel at being potted into very large containers per se, but rather, they rebel at being potted into very large containers with a soil that is too slow and water-retentive. This is a key point. We know that there is an inverse relationship between soil particle size and the height of the perched water table (PWT) in containers. As particle size increases, the height of the PWT decreases, until at about a particle size of just under 1/8 inch, soils will no longer hold perched water. If there is no perched water, the soil is ALWAYS well aerated, even when the soil is at container capacity (fully saturated). So, if you aim for a soil (like the gritty mix) composed primarily of particles larger than 1/16", there is no upper limit to container size, other than what you can practically manage. The lower size limit will be determined by the soil volume's ability to allow room for roots to ’run’ and to furnish water enough to sustain the plant between irrigations. Bearing heavily on this ability is the ratio of fine roots to coarse roots. It takes a minimum amount of fine rootage to support the canopy under high water demand. If the container is full of large roots, there may not be room for a sufficient volume of the fine roots that do all the water/nutrient delivery work and the coarse roots, too. You can grow a very large plant in a very small container if the roots have been well managed and the lion's share of the rootage is fine. You can also grow very small plants, even seedlings, in very large containers if the soil is fast (free-draining and well-aerated) enough that the soil holds no, or very little perched water. I have just offered clear illustration why the oft repeated advice to ‘resist potting up more than one pot size at a time’, only applies when using heavy, water-retentive soils. Those using well-aerated soils are not bound by the same restrictions. As the ht and volume of the perched water table are reduced, the potential for negative effects associated with over-potting are diminished in a direct relationship with the reduction - up to the point at which the soil holds no (or an insignificant amount) of perched water and over-potting pretty much becomes a non-issue. Appropriate Medium From my perspective, an appropriate medium is a medium that allows us to water to beyond the point of saturation at will, so we're flushing the dissolved solids (salts) that are present in tapwater and fertilizer solutions. These dissolved solids are left behind and accumulate in soils whenever we're forced to water in sips, which is commonly employed as a strategy in order to avoid the sogginess that limits root function and wrecks root health. It's important to realize that a healthy plant is not possible w/o a healthy root system. If you have established goals that include healthy and attractive plants, it's critical that you have a plan to avoid the limitations imposed by over-watering and an accumulation of dissolved solids (salts) in the soil solution. Not every grower fully understands the dilemmic issues associated with inappropriate soils that force the plant to pay a vitality tax resultant of an unhealthy amount of water being retained for extended periods when we water correctly – which is to say, when we flush the soil to limit salt build-up. On one hand, we have the potential for over-watering, and when we act to avoid it by offering dribs and drabs of water here and there, we have high salt levels to deal with. It's easy to see how we all might benefit from use of a soil that allows us to water so we're flushing away excess salts without limiting our plant's vitality via waterlogged soils. Al

if you know that rhiz .. why didnt you tell us what it is ..

to my eye .. not recognizing the tree ...

its overly mature.. too close to the house [and you are VERY LUCKY it didnt fall on the house] .. and historically improperly pruned .... and God knows what a tree that size needs stakes for..

i vote for immediate removal .. as a nuisance ... and potential threat ... to you and your home ...
it most likely failed.. due to 'included bark' .. see link ... which i THINK i can see in the second pic ... if so, it is a natural function of the tree itself.. crotch angles.. most likely complicated by the improper pruning.. followed by the wind/storm... with the weight at height.. that caused the ultimate failure ...

in other words.. its the trees fault ... one cant change its genetic predisposition to improper crotch angles ...

qa4me, I know that this is a tree forum but my attention is on your house, really beautiful.
I didn't even know pears will grow in So Cal!!!

That small stake is unusual....

I see darker wood on the top of the broken branch. To overanalyze I bet water got in there and caused rot.

That is a decent size for an ornamental pear. An accomplishment. Of course an oak in my yard randomly dropped a branch the size of that tree today but hey, the oak is 60 plus years old not twenty

Callery pears typically have weak branch attachments, clustered at the top of the trunk. Result is included bark between long, heavy branches. Some pruning was done to remove branches, but crown reduction would also be needed to reduce the load on each branch. No more than 1/3 of the crown can be removed per year, so long branches will remain and will still be subject to similar wind damage. However, I am always for saving any tree that can be saved. The world already shows signs of climate change caused by lack of trees.

One thing for sure - the next two branches (to the right just above the pole, and behind facing the house) will follow that first one down soon. The branch above the pole already has a hairline crack visible in the first pic. So ditto to Ken on urgent removal of this dangerous tree.

One final observation, a white flowering tree is not effective in front of a white building, a white board fence makes it even worse. IMO choose another color for your new tree, one that doesn't get lost in the background.

Pineresin, you were right on. The 2 branches fell the next day. It was a blessing know one was hurt.
Just curious; do any of you happen to be an arborist by profession? If so, may I contact you or is anyone familiar with or know someone in the 92883 area that I might contact?

you do not need an arborist.. one specially trained in tree doctoring..

you need an INSURED tree removal service ...

the price may be wildly different.. or it might not ...

check your local phone book ... and get 3 estimates ... and call and verify that any insurance document is currently in force ...

you are looking for full removal.. and since its right out front.. grinding of the stump ...

i would not wait another month for removal ...

Hello again,
Everything happened as you all predicted. The branches fell one by one and although I didn't witness it, I think it pretty much happened the way Pineresin wrote starting with the 2 branches to the right and then the rest of the branches fell landing on this home and a neighboring home. The tree was removed about a week after this happened. I am not saying that you all are not experts, it's very obvious to me that you all know what you are talking about based on your predictions and later what came to be which is the reason why I came to this forum in the first place. But for documentation purposes...the reason for me asking for an arborist is that I was hoping one of you were an arborist or might know of an arborist on this site or in my area that might be able to diagnose, from the pictures,
what the actual cause was for the deterioration of the tree. I need to find out if vandalism could have been the cause for the destruction of this tree i.e. kids hanging from the branch causing it to break thereby causing shock thereby killing the tree or if this was going to happen anyway because it's the nature of tree, rotted or because of improper care. So again your help is appreciated.

It would probably happen eventually due to the nature of the tree and the horrible branching structure they always give them in the nursery. Whomever keeps developing Bradford Pears with that stupid cluster of branches should be sued for millions of $$$.

Wow it got very quiet here. Thank you famartan and all who contributed. Your insights helped me know what I was looking at and I have been able to find a lot out about these trees. Famartan you are right. It is almost a crime to continue creating and using these trees at least without prewarning of what's to come. It's not an "if" but a "when" as far as I can tell from all the countless pictures, articles and videos, I have seen about the "Bradford Pear's" or "Callery Pear's" downed branches which seemingly are without much warning. Although storm and wind may exascerbate the condition it doesn't seem to be the cause. Hopefully others will see this and be warned.
