frozen leaves

I just received my AV,s from the ebay auction. All of them seem to be in good shape with little frost damage except for one. All the leaves are frost bit. I had to remove them and am hoping the plant will regrow from the roots. Any hope for this happening?

Liza, you removed *all* the leaves? Even the crown?

There is always hope. I'd say keep your fingers crossed but don't hold your breath.

yep. everything was mush. I'm hoping the roots have survived. Since one plant(out of 7 )was a freebee I guess I can't complain.

There are some cool growing Hoyas like Hoya carnosa, fungii, sherherdii and pubicalax among others that can take cool to cold weather and could be grown in the ground. The warm growing species from the low elevations in the tropics just can't take the cold but Hoyas from high elevations are accustomed to cold night temperatures and cooler days. I don't know the low temperatures in your area but as long as there is no frost you should be OK with the cool growing species. You can always try planting close to south facing wall etc. to take advantage of the warmer micro climate the wall provides. Mike

I don't have that answer (re. leaf breakdown process). In general prolonged moist conditions promote rot. So a rhiz buried in a pile of wet leaves. wet soil, wet sawdust, etc. will rot --- faster in warm temps. Will the leaves remain dry thru the winter? I have read here that ROOTLESS rhizomes left on top of frozen ground fare better than those 1/2 buried. You will read about rhizomes buried in compost piles sprouting forth ~~ my guess is that these are old cultivars which seem to withstand abuse better than more recent introductions. Or they are very vigorous cultivars. Some are pretty indestructible. And I believe it is Walter who has posted about many pinks not being hardy. Lots of variables.

Jim - trying to find my weather station. Haven't used it in awhile. On the plus side, the house is getting a super fall cleaning while I tear it apart looking for my sensor. Wet - I'm hoping they put off enough heat. With multiple layers of frost cloth, kept dry by the compost bin, which will be buried beneath snow all winter (that's a natural snow collecting area from shoveling), I'm hoping to keep it warm enough to get it through. Wx - I've been using leaves for several years now with mixed succes. My experience is that as long as the leaves are kept dry, they work great. I've pretty much followed Francko's advice. I've always said that I won't heat, but since I've moved here, in many cases it's unavoidable. I lost my first 2 trachies last year using the same method I've used with minors and needles, but my protection failed allowing snow and ice to collect in the leaves around the base. I'm hoping that with significantly more moisture protection as well as the lights encased by multiple layers of frost cloth to envelop the heat, and then buried by snow, it will be enough. For my marriage's stake, I have to take baby steps. Right now my wife is totally content with how the protection looks. If I told her I was jumping into a framed structure with windows, heat, insulation, etc.. she might not take it as well. Plus I'm trying to do it as cheaply as possible with what I have.

I've done this since my teenage camping days. Block ice always lasts longer but cubes will cool things faster so sometimes if you can't pre-chill things, put your cans and stuff in with cubes then add the blocks to maintain. Ice water is the fastest chiller. Simple little things that so many forget about like keep your cooler in the shade! Don't open it needlessly or you lose the cool. When camping we kept separate coolers for the drinks to let the foodstuffs not be subjected to the frequent opening of the cooler that the beer/pop cooler would have. And wrap a blanket or your unused jackets around the cooler. If you're at a lake, set the cooler in the lake, preferably under a dock if possible for extra cooling ability. At home I have several of those "blue ice" can coolers to freeze and boy do they work nice! Otherwise I generally toss the can coolers in the cooler too and rotate them out. A little extra cool on a hot day, although usually I'll go through a beverage of choice quickly enough that it's not too big a problem. I too seldom use ice cubes at all. I prefer the beverage to be cold rather than dilute it with ice. Holiday time when I have a special type of drink I might keep a couple trays of ice in the freezer, otherwise, I don't bother. And I always fill the trays with filtered water too. Helps for the taste.

I'm going to pick up my babies from that auction tomorrow. A friend has been taking care of them (they were mailed to her house) and says that 2 of them were mush. I hope the rest are okay.

~have the beginnings (how many n's?) of a spectacular migraine. The barometer here has been swinging like a pendulum and my poor head can't keep up!

I got my little ones and *none* are mush!! My friend rescued the two she had thought were goners, so they're all okay.

I mostly got pinks, but also one fantasy and two (or three, I can't remember) greens. I was hoping for a dark blue or a yellow, but considering the price I'm thrilled. I'm not all that keen on greens, but I'm hoping to use them for trade purposes. And who knows, once they bloom, I may fall in love.

I'll post the list soon.

Hi feegle I lucked out and received 2 blues (mickey Mouse and cowboy blues) Unfortunately the cowboy is the one that is mush. I keep the roots watered and hope for a comeback. will be glad to share plantlets once I start new ones from a leaf started

Feegle, you don't like greens? Weeeeeell we'll just have to talk in the spring, as my Arctic Fox (a Senk wasp) leaves are popping babies like crazy.

It is possible for AVs to come back from the roots assuming the roots were't also frozen and damaged. My rabbits ate my Playful Spectrum down to the stump and I kept the pot lightly moist and gave it light and I got tiny suckers. Ultimately, I was able to take off two plantlets. Don't wait until the suckers get too large, though, as the other times I've done this, in trying to wait until they were quite big, mine all rotted.

My Tiny Moon Goddess sprouted one perfect plant off of its roots when I did the big chop. You just never know.
